Hastert And Others Run To The Aid Of Scumbag Jefferson

A corrupt Democrat's best friend is naturally...a Republican! Go figure. As I pointed out the other day in my article "Louisiana's Jefferson, A Repeat Offender", this is not the first time Rep. William Jefferson has come across our sights as a general all-around scumbag with power. This man is point blank in the crosshairs of this fraud scandal, previously accused of abusing his powers of office during Katrina to the expense of people's lives and safety. And the only story that can seem to filter up through the muck of the quagmire called mainstream media is that of high-powered Congressional leaders speaking of the "outrage" of another branch of the Government investigating them?

This is priceless. Leaders from both sides of the aisle, the House and the Senate, are pointing to this with the all-too-familiar battle cry of late, "Abuse of Executive Powers!" I'm sorry, just exactly who was supposed to look into this matter, the Library of Congress Police Force? All 131 of them, but wouldn't that seem excessive? I mean, what with their intimidating interrogation tactics using metal detectors, standards of behavior enforcement, dreaded open-bag searches, and the almost inhumane thought of video surveillance in the reading rooms, I shudder to think. According to Reuters, Hastert and Tony Snow both weighed in on the investigation.

"My opinion is that they took the wrong path," Hastert, R-Ill., told reporters after meeting with Bush in the White House. "They need to back up, and we need to go from there."

"We are hoping that there's a way to balance the constitutional concerns of the House of Representatives with the law enforcement obligations of the executive branch," said White House press secretary Tony Snow. "Obviously we are taking note of Speaker Hastert's statements."

What in the world are they thinking here? The man stands accused of a crime, a fraudulent crime while serving in one of the most powerful committees while holding Public office, and we need who to hold the FBI's hand in order to ferret out the truth after month's of stonewalling a subpoena? The fact that he is a member of the Black Caucus, the fact that he is on the Ways and Means Committee, the fact that he is a Democrat — these should lend even more import to his accountability in order to preserve the integrity of those memberships. Since when did Congress rise above all in answering questions as to their actions, especially actions on government time? And we need permission from exactly who, other than We The People, to see what is rotten and smells under the stairs?

Funny how perspective colors what is "news." In my view, I'm happy to see the Republican Congress getting upset about SOMETHING the Executive Branch does, even if it's 6 years too late, and even if in this particular case the raid may well be justified. It's just too bad they sat on their hands while Bush ripped the Constitution a new hole.

Excelent!!!
I am from Louisisana and this scumbags represents me.The huff and puff about helping the people of New Orleans is a crock. If he was so intenet in helping the people of New Orleans why not get a company in Louisiana a contract in stead of Kentucky?
Kentucky is not in Louisiana I checked my atlas!!!!!
Thanks

Paul, I think you're wrong on this one. Granted, corruption and ideology are always present in Washington. However, preserving the principle of separation of powers isn't a pretextual issue here. Rather it's the overriding consideration. I'm glad to finally see congressmen protesting the continual neutering of congress. It's a shame it has to be in the putative defense of a scumbag like Jefferson. I wish it had been over the wiretapping, the use of torture, or the signing statements. Hey, but at least it's a start.

TFD,

Seperation anxiety bullshit, who the hell is supposed to, no excuse me, who the hell is allowed to investigate Congress then? Pinkerton's? You cannot protest the process, unless you have an alternate process to offer. "No process", that is an unacceptable prospect.

Seperation of powers was meant in context of lawmaking, nothing said about lawkeeping.

Now, the Hon. Rep. William Jefferson is a real, honest-to-God politician!

A John Wayne character once said, "The only thing worse than a thief is a liar." But I ask you, in all humility, how can you be a competent thief, without also being a liar? Of course, some may ask whether the Hon. Rep. William Jefferson is indeed a competent thief. And I say to you, consider the fact that this man is a full-time felon who has only been caught a few times. No one bats 1.000!

John wayen has a few other quotes that are appropriate to plitical personalities/issues of the day

"Life is tough, but it's tougher when you're stupid."

He was obviously talking about Ray Nagin.

Courage is being scared to death - but saddling up anyway.

Obviously a reference to Bill Clinton realizing he'd have to have sex with Hillary after they were married.

It is the outside of enough that the scumbag maggots of congress have created for themselves such an atmosphere of special privilege that they hold themselves to be above the law, and places they choose to frequent (and their own stinking carcasses) to be sacrosanct against investigation and search & seizure. Their claim that this is an abuse of executive privilege is so flimsy it's beyond embarrassing. These people have deliberately forgotten they are elected to SERVE, not to RULE; in the interests of serving, they, like Ceasar's wife, should be required to be above suspicion, and prepared to fling open to the most intent public scrutiny ANY aspect of their physical surroundings or lives to prove it. Jefferson should be hanged, drawn, & quartered for treason, and his parts displayed in the trees on the mall as a warning to other wanna-be greedy congressional sticky fingers, and every other member of congress should be required to spend a minimum of 3 summer months solid serving in a Mao-style "re-education" facility - perhaps on the Eastern Shore - to remind them they are of and not above The People.

Screw that Nancy I have a better idea.....

Every member of congress must be forced to sit in the front passenger seat of a 1967 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with thier hands and feet bound with rope while Ted Kennedy takes them on a scenic driving tour of cape cod after he has attended a dinner party.

No, my way at least they'd be doing something that might actually be of value. Besides, ol' Swimmin'hole Ted would be right in there with the rest of 'em, spreadin manure & pickin' them tomatoes.
