Pearl Jam Offers Free Video on Google
Published May 22, 2006
Google Video is offering Pearl Jam’s "Life Wasted" music video as a free download. Pearl Jam is going to allow the video to be Creative Commons license. I admit to being a fan of Pearl Jam, so I might be a little biased, but I think what they're doing is great. It gives the fans what they want and takes advantage of the internet rather than trying to fight it.
If you don’t know, a Creative Commons license means that you can download, share, or post the video for free as long as you don’t make any money from its use and Pearl Jam is credited as the owner. Google is offering the video until May 24.
Pearl Jam already had a free stream on CBS’s new innertube, so they have a pretty good understanding of using the internet for promotion and giving the fans something for free. The part I don’t get, why is it a limited time offer? Once the video is downloaded it will show up on YouTube or MySpace or somewhere else. MySpace is a place that television shows and musicians use all the time for promotion, so once it's there, isn’t that good for Pearl Jam?
