CD Review - Shrift's Lost In A Moment
Published May 22, 2006
Shrift's Lost In A Moment is a sprawling, melodic CD full of exotic lyrics, beats, and vocals. The CD starts with the title track, a slow-moving song with whispered lyrics, a description that fits most of the album's contents. However, Lost In A Moment's faster songs, such as "Sereia," "Snow Samba," "Floating City," and (most notably) "To The Floor," all work nicely, showing off Shrift's ability to blend electronica and electro beats with melodic vocals while keeping a low-key, relaxed feel to the music. This is not dance music, this is chilling out in style, keeping the mood upbeat music.
Some of the best songs recall far-off landscapes, secrets, and ultimate relaxation. Singer Nina Miranda (formerly of Smoke City) alternates between French, Portuguese and English, each language bringing something different to the songs. The music is deeply layered and textured, with Nina's vocals floating seemingly effortlessly on top of it all. The amazing thing is that it manages to keep its modern edge throughout most of the album, never straying too far into an otherworldly atmosphere.
Yet for all this praise, there are flaws. Tracks such as "Blue" and "As Far As I Can See" seem to drag. In other parts, the beats or whispered vocals seemed a bit repetitive, something that might have not happened had the group experimented a bit more with different rhythms or fused a greater volume of fast paced songs into the CD.
However, these are comparatively small objections. Overall Lost In A Moment is a very fine CD. A complex, layered, and almost surreal experience that you would expect to hear at any first rate stylish lounge.

This CD does anything but "suck." It was tough at first coming from an addiction to Smoke City, but man, on a different level this CD is completely amazing.
And for the love of... give Blue another chance! I glossed over it at first as well, but that song can make you drunk just by listening to it.
It may also be worth noting that this CD might not fit a younger, less mature audience. And it's spelled "diarrhea".
I love it! Lost in a Moment is 20 kinds of beautiful!!! And I completely agree with Max, Nina just does an incredible job on Blue. That, and Lost In Portuguese are the best songs on the album, IMHO.
And be sure to watch the video for Lost in a Moment (it's on their website)--I could watch that forever as a screensaver. ^_^

This CD sucks. i hate it. i'd rather have diarehea than listen to a song on this cd.
