May Music Mixtape
Published May 21, 2006
Pretty much every month I put out a mixtape filled with new music and a few throwbacks. The one for May is bookended by blips, bleeps, and industrial analog noise but centered with upbeat indie tunes.
It begins with Aphex Twin and the moody Dangerous Muse and concludes with a surprisingly sinister new Pet Shop Boys track and an old one from Front 242. Elsewhere it's all very spring-like with bouncy new music by Keane, Rock Kills Kid, and Zero 7. The latter track is paired with a new one from Massive Attack, both featuring guest vocalists who bring an easy listening sound to what is usually electronica.
As an instrumental break to the mix there is Octopus Project and the Tango-influenced cover of "Blue Monday."
New bands Margot and the Nuclear So and So's and Band of Horses have catchy epic romantic vibes to them. They sound polished, like they have been recording for decades. Also new is Peeping Tom, the Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, etc.) project with Rahzel, and Dan the Automator. Some may want to kill me for the Rihanna song, but I like the "Tainted Love" sample and it fits well right after Gnarls.
Track Listing:
AFX (Aphex Twin) - Crying in Your Face
Dangerous Muse - The Rejection
Gnarls Barkley - Just a Thought
Rihanna - S.O.S.
Keane - Is It Any Wonder?
Band of Horses - The Funeral

Yeah, no April mix b/c I struggled to find enough new tunes that flowed together for a mix. Also frankly I am a lazy bum.

Whatever happened to the April mix?
