TV Review: Gilmore Girls - Season Finale
Published May 11, 2006
It had been lacking for much of the season, but the usual fun and chemistry we've enjoyed for years helped open the episode. After a glum scene of Lorelai laying on the couch at Sookie's house, it appears Lorelai's oblivious to everything around her and absorbed in the drama of her rocky relationship with Luke.
A Friday night dinner with the elder Gilmores, during which Lorelai's mother Emily attempts to set up Lorelai's ex and the father of Rory, Christopher, with the daughter of a family friend, a psychologist, allowed for a healthy dose of the usual Gilmore humor. Rory, who was supposed to be in attendance, instead opted to throw a party for her boyfriend, Logan, who was soon to be off to England to help with his rich father's newspaper business. This left Lorelai to distract the awkward set-up with her usual cache of ridiculous questions in an attempt to save Christopher from further humiliation.
Emily Gilmore's attempt to set up Christopher fails miserably, but it provided an opportunity for Lorelai to spill her guts to a qualified professional. And she does so from the backseat of her car, filling her in on the ups and downs of her life with the Gilmores, her brief relationship in her teens with Christopher which resulted in Rory, and the bumpy relationship with Luke, whom she says is the only man she ever really loved and that they really belonged together. Luke, who has spent much of the season getting close to a 13-year old daughter he never knew he had until late last year, has put their June wedding on hold and, in doing so, unwittingly put their relationship on hold. The psychologist tells Lorelai that she needs to speak her mind and get what she wants.
And she does — she runs to Luke's diner and demands that he elope with her that evening, right then and there. Luke, understandably, is confused and thrown off guard by her frantic ultimatum and reacts like most rational people would — he asks that she just calm down and wait. Instead, Lorelai walks away, and when we see her next she's knocking on Christopher's door, who takes her in.
We cut to the morning and see Lorelai in bed, under sheets but obviously naked, and Christopher enters the room in a robe. There's a glimmer of hope that what we're thinking happened didn't really happen, but that is dashed when Christopher removes his robe, crawls into bed, and snakes an arm around Lorelai. Staring off screen, she glares with the knowing, weary stare of someone who did something very bad and very stupid.
I have to wonder if departing show creators and writers Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband had to feel the same way. Because with that one move, they virtually destroyed any hope for this show functioning next season the way it has in the past. And they may have driven off a large number of the show's fans, many of whom flocked to the Internet to discuss and generally diss the season finale.

Everything you said was just spot on - one of the best reviews on the finale of Gilmore Girls!
I totally agree. All we can do is hope the new writers pull a "DALLAS" and make it all a dream and then show the reality of Luke and Lorelai getting married!! This season was uneventful. I am hoping the new writers make it much more exciting! Luke and Lorelai belong together. That is very clear! Putting Christopher between them would end the show!
I don't watch the show, but based on all the descriptions, it reminds me of the way that Aaron Sorkin left "The West Wing" after it's fourth season. He had the Vice President resign, the President's daughter kidnapped and Bartlet temporarily stepping down in favour of Walken. It was as if he was turning to John Wells and saying "okay, figure out how to get out of this one." I get the same sense here - the Palladinos are telling their successors and the network to figure a way out of this one.
I am amazed that so many people feel Luke and Lor belong together. How is that clear? She has never been much less than miserable the whole time she has been with him. He almost always puts her last. he doesn't communicate yet expects it from her. he is incessantly grumpy and tries to rain on her giddy prarade throgh life. What I found insulting was not that she wound up with Christopher but that they had her utter the unbelievable line that Luke was the first man she really loved. Who does she always wind up with? Who did she call when she knew Max was not the man for her? Who gets her humor? Who understands her? Certainly not Luke. The second worst line was when she said Luke gets her. You have to be kidding? Do you think Christopher would have not brought a gift on the Valentine's outing they had? And Luke just takes what must have been an extravagantly expensive piece of jewelry Logan bought for Rory and pretends he got it himself. Luke has been a great friend to Lor and he is a great foil when she wants to tease someone or annoy someone. She never jokes with him, only at him. But when she wants to joke like she does with Rory? That is Christopher. With Christopher she has a back and forth wit like in a great Cary Grant/Katharine Hepburn movie. Luke and Lor as a romantic couple is a big black hole sucking all life out of Lor.
Congrats! This article has been placed on Advance.net
I agree with the last message. I wish that Lorlei would get back together with Christopher, Luke is so boring and I agree that they don't have the chemistry of a couple, they are better off remaining friends. Plus Luke sort of pushed Lorlei away when he found that he had a daughter. They should just end their relationship now, before they can't even be friends.
I agree that Lor and Christopher belong together. and i think that the season 7 will find her pregnant with christophers baby (again) only this time they will get married.
while overall, this was a good summary of the finale, there is one point you made that didn't seem quite accurate, regarding lorelai's seemingly rash decision to run to christopher:
first of all, there has always been sexual tension between lorelai and christopher, such as the time they slept together at sookie's wedding. that shows just how spontaneous they can be. lorelai has never been one to be completely sane or predictable-i think you are expecting too much by saying lorelai would never do something like that. while i am disappointed that she probably ruined her relationship with luke, i'm not really surprised that lorelai ran to christopher when she hit a major bump in the road with luke.
and lorelai sleeping with christopher, while it may have been stupid, had nothing in common with rory sleeping with dean. the reason lorelai got upset at rory when she slept with dean was because dean was married. but christopher is not married or in a relationship, so lorelai being with him was not "exactly what she had scolded Rory for two seasons ago".
wow. the truth hurts and you surely told the truth. i love gilmore girls but you were right about this being an uneventful season and possibly a plot to ruin the show. personally, i think they should just have luke and lorelai get married and be happy together...if they think dragging it out is going to make people stick to watching it, they are desperately wrong. in fact, it makes me not want to watch the show anymore if it going to turn into a melodramatic soap opera. and i read one comment someone said something about making it all be a dream...i really do think thats a good idea to get the show back on its feet.
all i can say is, good luck Rosenthal, im pretty sure your gunna need it.
When did the season finale run on the east coast. I'm not sure I got it on Tivo.
i agree
i think it was all a dream
ok, i cried soo bad at thelast episode when rori and logan said goodbye, i think that they r the ones that belong together. i was suprised when lorelai slept with chris. anyway, plz somebody if u know, write down if u know if there is going to be a seventh and eighth season, i need to know!!!!!!!!!1
I agree with one of the previous commenter - it didn't strike me as weird that Lorelai suddenly slept with Christopher. Probably not as well developed, but definitely not unexpected.
That said though, it almost seems like a repeat of season 2 (which I just watched on DVD). Towards the end of season 2, Christopher was getting closer to Rory, and by that token, Lorelai too. It ended with Lorelai and him getting together at the inn during Sookie's wedding. It was almost going to be happily ever after until Sherry called Christopher to tell him that she's pregnant with Gigi.
In season 5, Christopher did start showing signs of closeness with the girls. During the elder Gilmores' renewal, I believe he even expressed his feeligns for Lorelai. He's also made steps to be closer to them, throughout season 6 - like offering to pay for Rory's education, and getting parenting advice from Lorelai. De ja vu anyone?
Oh i so agree with everything the first guy Tom said. Right on everything! Especially the last part. We all just need to give Dave a chance in writing the show and i bet he will bring it out of this dark hole its in and turn the 7th season into an amazing ending to show. We just gotta have faith in him. And after the 6th season finale, it really cant get any worse right? so its all up hill from here.
MY GOD!!!! i am so disgusted!!! i can't believe amy and daniel would do such a thing!!!!! luke & lorelai belong together!!! PERIOD!!!!
I have seen all the GG episodes ever aired and i can tell you right now that there is no reason to suggest that christopher and lorelai are going to end up together.I start seeing this bad stupid ending coming because they make that sherry bailed on chris an gigi, so we could have the ending that no one wants rorys parents together and lorelai can raise gigi and maybe have another child.
Since the first season they show us lorelai and luke as the ideal couple he is the one who is there,he is not just a good friend or a good coffee maker he is more...more. when he gave her the earrings and then the necklace the perfect match.
i think it was the worst season finale i've ever seen!!!!!! lorelai and luke must be together that is what all people expected i hope lorelai isnt pregnant because that would be so wrong!!!!!
I am in the middle, I like Chris and Luke for lorelai but I hate seeing loerlai all sad and dsepressed, it makes me depressed to even watch. i have loved G.G ever since the pilot but now it is getting from funny to sad.
Whatever happens, i hope we get some spoilers from somewhere about the 7th season, can't wait for it to return.
i think Luke and Lorelai are purfect we all know it they know it they will fix it they always do Chris can't handle the responseability. I love Gilmore Girls I would die with out it.
i completely, 100% agree with this review. The idea that Lorelai would once again run back to Chris after all these years is insulting to viewers, Luke/Lorelai fans, and anyone who has been in Lorelai's position before. I know of no single mom who would allow the father of her child to continue to hurt both her and their child and continue to allow this person back into her life. The entire show has always pointed towards a Luke/Lorelai ending of the show, but why must we sit throught Chris/Lorelai, it's an insult to fans and single mothers around the world. I hope that other writers/creators/producers learn from the Palladinos screw up with this finale.
I watched "partings" with my mom and she thinks that lauren might actually be pregnant and the writers will use that to show her have Chris' baby!
i have always loved gilmore girls and i was compleatly shocked to see that lorelai had slept with chris again. i hope the new producer can fix this and im kinda hoping that rori and logan might get married
i agree with the make it all a dream tequnique. i really think that is was an insult to all gilmore girl fans to have that happen it really makes you want to stop watching but on the other hand it makes you want to watch the next season to see how they fix it if they can i dont want this to turn into some big dramatic show i want lorelai and luke to get married and rory and logan to get married i want this to be a good happy eventful but not dramatic season, and i dont think it is to much to ask of the producers by the way when does the new season air???
OMG, Luke and lorelai are horrible for each other i was so glad that her and chris hooked up. I loved it when her and luke were friends but hated them as a couple. He should get together with April's mom, and lorelai should be with Rory's dad.
I don't think Chris and Lorelai sould get together. I want Luke and Lorelai to get together.
I concur with #5, Kathy. Luke is consistently grumpy, and it doesn't seem there's too much anyone can do about it. He's a downer, and I think Loralei should hang out with people, romantic or not, with whom she can make witty banter. This is because: 1) Rory is busy screwing up her life with Logan the Drunken and Confused and 2) Loralei has enough to battle in her life between Rory making typical coming-of-age errors and her mom being a pain in the rear end. I guess I ultimately think that the plot would better work for me if she remained single and kicking heels with the whole community (not in the sexual nature), per usual. Or, if Luke was a bit less grumpy--I could go with that, too. I really like Christopher in the script, so I think that he should definitely remain. Those two hooking up for good seems a stretch to me, though.
Iam write now in the middle of the sides. I like Chris and I like Luke too.But this season has built up christophers defence.
I think that Luke and Lorelai belong together.I mean if you look back on other episodes you can see that there was always something there.
I kinda agree with #5 kathy but i kinda don't.Luke is grumpy a lot of the time but i think that Lorelai is what makes him happy.
Luke has always waited for Lorelai and Lorelai has sometimes been waiting for Chris, but i don't think that Lorelai and Chris belong together.I used to think that they did but now i think that they are done.
i totally disagree with the fact that luke and lorlie are NOT ment for each other anyone who is a fan of gilmore girls knows that they are and that is where the show has been going since the first episode. Christopher is a scumbag hes not a strong man at emily and richards renewing of the vows he ruined something for lorlie and that pisses me off to think that lorlie slept with him because that isnt something her character would do maybe a kiss but no further. Luke doesnt act witty cause hes not but he isnt supposed to be because he and lorlie rnt the exact same if they were then there would be no mental attraction luke is strong where lorlie is weak and lorlie is strong where luke is weak. Christopher will be and always has been a rebound a guy for lorlie to turn to, a friend, who shes done stupid things for, the only thing they have going for them is PHYSICAL attraction and a marriage can not survive on that alone, plus chris is just getting his life in order and had dealt with the fact that lorlie was taken and he had already burned that bridge for lorlie to go and give him hope was cruel and u no its not going anywhere because of the glare and she knows it to. Logan is a jerk just look how he treated Jess and had sex with all those women he and rory r not meant for eachother rory and JESS are because they share the same things (books) but also have the same thing as luke and lorlie do where one is weak the others strong. i think and hope this will be the last season because if its not it will have been dragged on to long, they need to stop while they are ahead (like friends.) I hope it ends with (like one of lorlies dream) her waking up to a ton of alarm clocks with luke cooking in the kitchen and luke oats her stomach and she is pregnant with twins, regardless or not of whos twins they are, i think luke is a very strong guy meant for lorlie.
Well, when I've read about this following season I don really want to see it. It's a pitty, that the writers had to complicate some really good and obvious situations and good relations beetwen the characters and turned the show into something like soap-opera where everyone is able to turn into completelly different person and it takes a minute or two.
i think that Chris and lorelai DO NOT belong together.. all Chris ever did was betray Lorelai's trust. He was probably using Lorelai. Lorelai loves Luke and Luke loves Lorelai. Luke just didn't know what he was doing wrong. He allowed them to grow apart but in the end he is probably going to fix it. If Chris got Lorelai pregnant then Luke will have to deal with that because one way or another, Luke and Lorelai has to be together.
To be honest I think Gilmore Girls had a great run, I have to admit it's really the only show I watch and to see it comming to an end really upsets me. I read in US magazine that in this comming season we are suposed to see at least one wedding and the birth of two babbies! I can't wait, but I have to wonder if the two babbies have any connection to the dream loraliea had, about luke setting a ton of alarm clocks to wake her up, and when she comes down stairs he hides the coffee on her, and when he leaves for work he kisses her goodbye and rubs her stomach and talks to it and says two bazzar names. Who knows, well obviously you do, well the creators do.
I definatly agree with Chanel #31. I mean Chris and Lorelai are done there is nothing there, luke is the one for her, he was always there for her, he has waited for her and she has finally realized that i mean he has seen lorelai go through like 2 or 3 relationships, he has seen her go through all of them and he has been supportive. And now I think she should wait for him, and be supportive of him as he tries to get close to his daughter april.
okay,in a way this series is kina like a soap opera, i mean, there isn't one time where everyone is happy, without something bad happing next. well, i geuss thats what makes it a great show, i mean think about it, really think about it(what i am about to say is probably really stupid and i'll probably regret it later) but, for once I would like to see at least one episode end remotely happy, it always ends in a problem or a disbelief, and thats what makes it a great drama, but this show isn't just a drama, it's a comedy, or atleast thats what the tv guide tells me,okay yep i regret what i just wrote forget i even said anything.
i just read lindsey D's comment and i am sorry but i disagree if luke and aprils mom got together and chris and lor got together that would be the end there is nothing more to show
We all are entitled to our opinions. We all see the same thing in different ways, but I will say this to those who think that Christopher and Lorelai belong together. If this happens it is a good thing that the show is nearing the end of its run because if the love interest had been between Lorelai and Christopher the show would have ended at Season 2, 3 at most. Whenever they are together they are constantly trying to outwit each other and in the long run that is BORING. I agree that the show's creator should have made Luke less grumpy. I am a fan of his character but that aspect bothers me. They should also lose his cap and green jacket (love the flannel though)and make him shave. Other than that, I think Luke and Lorelai complement each other.
To appease the mind of those who long for Lorelai and Chris to be together, the show's creators should have reunited them right at the beginning when Rory needed her parents together (that ship has sailed) and kept Luke as just the diner owner pining for the beautiful Lorelai. Looks like Christopher's fans will have their wish come true in Season 7.
Anyone for a Max and Lorelai get together? How about Jason?
For me the show ended when April entered the scene, so no longer interested.
hello iam from Belgium and I4D LIKE TO SAY THAT iam the biggest fan of gilmore Iam really addicted but I don't know what to do.
i WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT GILMORE IS A SPECIAL SOAP BECAUSE WE EXPECT TO LAUGH TO CRY BUT ALSO TO LEARN COZ THE SPEECH is really intelligent.
Don't we forget that this is a soap about mother and daughter relationship and this ended at the beginning of season after it's not about it anymore Rory is changing LORELAI SAD i watch all the seasons anyway but where can we find the quality of seasons123and4.iTHINK THAT FOR SEASON 7 RORY AND HER MOTHER MUST GIVE THEIR RELATIONSHIP A NEW DEPARTURE COZ WE DON't see them so much together and that what made the soap great.
iT4S ME AGAIN SUE SORRY FOR THE MISTAKES Imeant season 4 ;gilmore girls gave so much joy and good moments but I think that from season five the soap is taking a different way. season five was quiet good and the sixth was ok Thank you to let me know about your point of vieuw.
Does anyone no when the next season will start? You would think that it would be out there by now!
Hey people, I love gilmore girls, and personally i think logan is so hot and rory and logan are the cutest couple, i hope they don't break up and i think lorelli and luke should be together because the deserve eacother not like chris he walked out on lorelli and he moved on he shouldn't be aloud to ruin lorelli and lukes relationship,
Hi ,my name is Adriana I´m from Mexico and i love Gilmore girls , i like to see Lor and Luke with their Tweens (those that Lor dreamed once) and I like to see Rory with Jess .... i miss Jess.
This is big time soap opera. To go back and forth like this with Lorelia and Luke's relationship makes fans very upset. She had a dream of being pregnant with Luke's baby, and now they should end the show with that senerio. Chris and Lorelia never had anything there. Whatever they had it's over now. Luke and Lorelia's realtionship was so long awaited and people got so excited when Emily told Luke to go back to her. It was like everyone experienced falling in love again. Luke and Lorelia belong together and if you end the show with Lorelia and Chris being together, then many viewers and going to regret ever watching gilmore girls to begin with. We all know life sucks sometimes, but it's shows like this where most of us can still hope for a happy ending. After all Lorelia's been through, she should deserve a wedding. That's what the viewers want, so why not give it to the fans who was so dedicated for all these years? Just make sure Chirs is NOT apart of it!
HAVING LORELIA AND CHRIS GET MARRIED WILL BE A DEATH SENTENCE FOR THE SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First of all, I absolutely loved the season finale. I'm sorry that everyone else seemed to be so disappointed. I seriously could not keep myself from crying.
I know I'm gonna get attacked for this one, but I really don't like Luke and Lorelai together. Doesn't anyone remember the trip to Martha's Vineyard? He was so ridiculously jerky towards her and didn't even buy her a present. He forgot. I admit that they were good together at the beginning of their relationship, but Luke seems to have completely lost interest or something. Lorelai deserves to be treated much better than that. She deserves to come first and she doesn't anymore with Luke.
I completely understand her "Now or never" ultimatum. She was suffering for a long time by not saying anything and she wasn't happy. She finally broke down and needed to do that for herself. If Luke really loved her, he would've kept his promise he made to her in Martha's Vineyard. I really don't like Luke anymore because of this. He has turned into such a jerk and I hope that Lorelai finds happiness elsewhere. If this season has proven anything to me, it's that Lorelai is too good for Luke.
i agree with the fact that luke is acting like an ass hole, but i wanted to kill lorelay when i saw her lyieng in bed! i mean, come on!! we've been waiting and waiting for both of them to be together, and the posibility of them getting married now has vanished.. nevertheless i think it was a good move by the creators, but only if the end up together.. after all its loralay and luke!.. she cant go back to christopher, he is too inmature, and max medina is just not that known
i hope logan comes back from london, i started to like him, he really loves rory.. on the other hand i must confess (and dont kill me) i allways loved jess!! he is so hot!.. and i mean he was a jackass, but he loved her, and they had so many things in common... and he managed to put his life in track back in new york.. i dont know, it would be nice
I'm from Germany and here the finale hasn't yet run but because of the internet I know what will happen, especially in the 7th season.
When I read about the season's end and the next development I was utterly disappointed.
It's true that there will be always Chris/Lorelai-Fans as well as Luke/Lorelai-Fans, but in every season it was hinted Lorelai and Luke become a couple. On the other side it was alway made clear there is something left between Lorelai and Chris, but they were teenage-lovers and their relationship as lovers is long over. Well, it should have been so! It would have been okay to show Lorelais's indecision whether she should keep fighting to turn her past in a happy end or to believe in a new love.
I definitely don't think Chris and Lorelai are ment to be together. Maybe Luke did make a lot of mistakes in the end but nobody should forget that Chris always was a constantly failure for Lorelai, and some good friend-time in the past season don't make him Mr. Right!
Psychologically the out-coming is the worst-case for the show. All the seasons, L/L-fans were hoping and waiting to see them together, and although the relationship didn't go dreamingly well Lorelais's betrayal is a killer. I know people which stopped watching GG's and I decided to stop till the ongoing with Luke & Lorelai (I'm sure it'll be) is happening. To keep going the show after Luke & Lorelai became a couple was a mistake, in my eyes, because for a development there had to be problems. The things should left when all is well.
luke and lor should get married. it seems only right. but what about Logan?? what happened to the 2 of them? it seems as if logan hesitated before closing the lift door and who knows? he might have been thinking of turning around and staying with Rory?
I couldnt beleive it when lorelai got in bed with christopher evreyone knows that luke and lorelai are meant to be i mean i know luke can be crabby sometimes but still all chris ever did was betray lorelai i really hope that they make lorelai tell chris she doesnt know what she was thinkin and for her to go get luke back??? and what is goin to happen with logan and roy?? i mean i personally never did want roy with logan i wanted her with jess but it just didnt work out that way i mean logan is a good guy and he is so cute but still i loved jess lol well that is just what i think i really think they should make a 7th season and fix what they messed up... LORELAI SHOULD BE WITH LUKE!!!!!!!
Gilmore girls was finally getting on track. Logan and Rory. Lorelai and Christopher. I never really liked Luke and Lorelai together. They made better friends and lovers. Christopher and Lorelai were meant to be together. If the divorce goes final and Lorelai gets back with Luke, I think you'l lose a lot of fans. That Luke and Lorelai ride is OVER. If the writers have sense, they'll find a way to keep Christopher and Lorelai together. And please don't bring Jess back. He was AWEFUL, with a captial A. Logan is a much better boyfriend and dare I say husband for Rory.
Luke and Lorlie desurve to be together
Okay well I think Loreali and Luke MUST be together. Hey they both start with an L. But I think he loves her and she loves him and I heard they are going to get married so personally, not watching the show because Loreali and Christopher are not together proves that you can't claim yourself to be the # 1 fan! But I like the way things are with all the characters. It's a great show!
I love GG and watch it all the time,Luke and lorelai are supposed to be together they should have been together since season 1.And christopher and lorelai are not good together maybe in the past but not any more- move on get over it and the people who said they should be together have no idea what they are talking about.I saw the look on lorelais face at the end of season 6 she wasnt happy and she wanted him to be luke.and luke has been closer to rory than her own father, and always been there for both of the girls, rory went to luke with her troubles not her father luke loves her like a daughter, christopher is in the past luke is now, and rory and logan are not good together because he didnt even tell her that they were broken up,when she didnt know that they were broken up and he then slept with all his sisters bridemaids and he was a jerk to jess. and jess and rory should be together he loved her so much and he still does, and i hope the show never finishes because i love it so much but if it ends i hope it does with a happy ending, because i have loved watching every minute of it.
I've been I die hard fan since the begining. During the first season I was a single mother on my own. The show"even though pretend" gave me encouragement at raising my daughter alone. My little girl is going to be 7 this year and we have a similar bond we are soooo close. sometimes I find Lor. to wishy washy but that's why it's a show and not real life.

Well-written review about a witty show with some of the best writing on tv --it'll be interesting to see how it survives, cosidering the changes and circumstances. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to see it too much this season, so I hope to catch up in reruns, ending and all.
