Published May 10, 2006
Martina Hingis of Switzerland took revenge defeating Flavia Pennetta of Italy in Berlin at the German Open first round. Hingis lost to Pennetta when they met in January in the first round of Hingis' comeback tournament at Gold Coast. Today the Swiss former No.1 of the world won in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-3. The German Open champion of 1999 will meet Julia Schruff of Germany in the next round.
"It's a great feeling to be standing here again on this court. Today I am happy that I was able to gain revenge," the 25-years-old Swiss said.
"Maybe I was too nervous," she said about her first meeting with Pennetta at Gold Coast. "I was too excited at every match. This time I adjusted my tactics.
"It's an incredible feeling to see all these people here," she said.
Hingis took a 4-1 lead in the first set but Pennetta fought her way back in the match, she could tie the game to 4 all.
In the 12th game Pennetta had trouble holding on to her serve and Hingis, who was leading 6-5 could take the first set after she broke the Italians service game.
In the 2nd set Hingis played better and placed her shots very well. She took a 3-1 lead and never gave that away. In the 9th game Hingis was serving for the match, and with two forehand winner and an unforced errors by 11th seed Pennetta, Hingis saved her service game to take the game, the set and the match.
Serbian Ana Ivanovic, who is the 12th seed, retired in tears after being hurt. She took the first set 6-1 against Na Li from China but she could not continue the match.
