DVD Review: Match Point (2005)
Published April 28, 2006
And like some films, this one doesn't get much better in the transfer over the the medium of DVD. Even a bad movie can make a great DVD if it has good commentary or great special features, but Match Point does not even make an attempt. There are no special features and absolutely no commentary to speak of. Frankly, I was shocked that the DVD was more than $10. On top of that the film sports a super Mono sound mix. Yes, you read that correctly, it says Mono. Thus while I would recommend seeing this film, especially if you are a Woody Allen fan, I would encourage you to rent the DVD. You may in fact be better off waiting for it to hit HBO, as it would be the exact same experience.
The Upside:
A beautifully filmed and directed piece. You can tell Woody Allen is behind it.
The Downside:
The acting is just okay and the film moves slowly.
On the Side:
At 124 minutes, this is Woody Allen's longest film to date.

I don't think a single Woody Allen movie DVD has included extras to speak of. He prefers to let the movies speak for themself. A bit of a shame, I admit (I'd love to see an Annie Hall SE with all the extra footage they supposedly cut out) but it's his call in the end. Look forward to seeing this movie anyway, I'm curious to see how it is.
