Console Review: Sony PSP

Well, it has been a long time coming, but I finally have come round to the joys of handheld consoles. I have tried a few in the past and was left deeply unimpressed. My new black Sony PSP has put this all to one side. This is an awesome piece of kit. I can store my music (yes the stuff I wrote) and music videos on there, watch movies and even take a look at blogs.

The screen is clean and crisp just wonderful to look at, as is the the device itself. It is by far the best-looking thing I have seen from Sony in a very long time, sleek and sophisticated with something that looks like mock carbon-fibre along the top. Placing the hole for the power supply and headphones on the bottom might not have been best but those are minor niggles. Battery life could be longer as well.

I have one game for the system so far - Burnout, and boy, is it damn fun. Reminds me of the hours I put in playing Carmageddon all those years ago. The device feels nice and comfortable in my hands as I play the game. It's nicely weighted as well and is usable sitting up or lying down. Burnout won't be the last either; I am thinking a golf game would be good for playing with my mates.

I came at this device with my normal level of cynicism as a computer rather than console gamer. Sony has delivered a device that is user-friendly and useful. I am well impressed.

It's a shame it does so much right except for games. We're finally getting some solid software over a year after it hit. The wait was terrible. At least it's getting easier to justify a purchase now.

It happens so often...good piece of kit and sod all launch software. Burnout will keep me happy for a while; but the non-interested but desperately jealous mates of mine look forward to the purchase of a golf game...

Hot Shots Golf is about the best golf you will get on the PSP. The launch Tiger Woods game was horrible because of its load times. Tiger 06 for PSP is actually quite good however. It is up to you if you want total arcade (Hot Shots) or sort of arcade (Tiger Woods).
