The Ramble: Gonzaga, The NFL, Opening Day, Anna Benson And (Of Course) Barry Bonds

The weather's getting warmer - in most places - and the sports action is heating up as well...so let's hit it.

Gonzaga and Adam Morrison. Gonzaga's collapse was one of the biggest/worst of all-time. It's a shame that those kids will have to live with that forever - or until the next two biggest collapses of all-time - but hey that's life in the big time. Adam Morrison's behavior during the final seconds of the game was inexcusable. Your star player - heck the country's star player - can't be weeping during the game when his team still has a chance to win the game. For as improbable as UCLA's comeback was, with 2.9 seconds, Gonzaga still had a chance to win the game as Morrison started to cry on the court. We've seen these kinds of crazy last second things happen in the tournament before. Players have to hang in there, and if things don't go their way deal with it. And by "deal with it" I don't mean sit at half court and cry while pulling your shirt up over your face while your teammates are huddled by the bench. Morrison's melt down probably won't hurt him on draft day, but he will have to answer some questions about his behavior. Guaranteed, some pro teams now are having some questions about his mental toughness.

"The Super 64." I've said it before - and others have said it as well - but it deserves to be repeated: The NCAA hoops tourney is the premier event in all of sports.

Announcers. March Madness is a showcase for some of the best play-by-play and color analysis in the business. I don't care what flavor that you prefer there is something for everyone's tastes. I'm partial to the teams of Vern Lundquist and Bill Raftery and Gus Johnson and Len Elmore. These guys provide a great mix of knowledge, sense of humor and excitement. Raftery is my favorite. He turns some great phrases. Raftery refers to one guy pushing another while battling for position as a "Tavern League shove." If you've ever played hoops in such a setting you know exactly what he's talking about. Classic.

Sal, great stuff here. I am with you on March Madness. I don't like college basketball but the tournament is great.

I can't wait for Opening Day, either. As a (until recently) long suffering Red Sox fan there is just nothing like the excitement of it all. My fantasy team is still a shambles but I cannot wait to see live action Sunday night after The Sopranos.

College is where you get into bad habits you can easily break after graduation. I bet Morrison also eats a lot of ramen, sleeps till noon, and doesn't empty the trash till it's overflowing.
