Birth and Taxes

Indoors or out, no one relaxes
In March, that month of wind and taxes,
The wind will presently disappear,
The taxes last us all the year.

Since my birthday is the day after the April 15th filing deadline, Tax Time is particularly poignant for me — a curious mixture of celebration and high spirits immediately following this national day of doom, dread, and despair.
I'm filing this article under "Politics" here at Blogcritics, but taxes aren't really a political issue anymore, no matter what politicians may say about "tax cuts," "tax breaks," and "read my lips: no new taxes." Let's face it — until we elect a Libertarian president and/or have another revolution in this country, we're stuck with 'em.
So I grudgingly filed my federal and state income taxes recently, which inspired several Tax Time topics to ponder...
First of all, there was this surprising statement at the end of the 1040EZ instructions:
"The average time and expenses required to complete and file Form 1040EZ will vary depending on individual circumstances. The estimated averages are:
Keep in mind that 1040EZ is the "EaZiest" form to fill out — one page, no itemized deductions, nothing unusual. It took me about 15 minutes to complete. I can understand why it might take others a little longer. But an "average" of eight hours? And isn't "Tax Software" supposed to make it even faster and easier to file your taxes? Nope... it'll apparently take you over thirteen hours to do it that way. Where do they come up with these numbers?
As usual, I didn't end up getting a "refund." While I'd certainly rather not send the government even more of my money, I'm at least glad I haven't been giving them an interest-free loan all year long. This reminds me how much the term "tax refund" bothers me. Aren't they just returning money that was rightfully ours in the first place? How is that a refund? And why do we have to pay interest on late tax payments, but the I.R.S. doesn't have to pay interest on money being "refunded" up to a year later?
