TV Review Boston Legal - "Shock and Oww!"

Alan is forced to resort to another tactic to get the photos back by paying the widow off. The conversation, I thought, was a little convoluted. Was Alan really suggesting that he would hire someone to beat up the widow if she did not hand over the pictures? I've been reviewing this series ever since "Black Widow" and still did not follow what Spader was saying. It only became clear once he asked her price while reaching for his checkbook.
In perhaps the most compelling storyline, Paul Lewiston (Rene Auberjonois) meets his daughter Rachel (Jayne Brook) and granddaughter Fiona in a coffee shop. When Rachel asks Paul for $40 because she cannot find her ATM card, he gives it to her. However, this leads him to wonder if she is using crystal meth again. Addicts, he tells Shirley in his office, feed their cravings in $40 increments.
Shirley says that he needs to be sure before doing anything. He agrees, since he could lose Rachel if he turns out to be wrong. He asks Brad Chase (Mark Valley) for a "personal favor": to find out if his suspicions are correct. He mentions that Brad is good at getting things done, no matter what it takes. This is a clear reference to Brad's impersonating an FBI agent to rescue an abducted child ("Gone"). Brad promises to do what he can.
Brad finds Rachel working in a bookstore and asks her to recommend books to help in addiction and recovery. She points him in the right direction. He thanks her, then turns and asks if she can recommend one that she especially likes. A common bond is struck when he says that he is an addict trying to get clean. She says that she has been clean for five years.
Rachel takes Brad to a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. When Brad is asked to introduce himself and tell his story, he starts babbling on about being a Marine. A serious silence answers him in response, so he finishes lamely with "and that's when I started using drugs." Yikes!
Rachel mentions "too bad it was a lie" when the meeting ends, saying she did not believe he wanted to stop using drugs. Rachel suggests that Brad could have simply passed when given the opportunity to talk. He responds that it is hard to open up about himself. Um, he just told a woman he had never met before that he was a drug addict! Rachel starts talking about how hard it was growing up with Paul for a father, since he would only listen to what he wanted to hear. Brad gets some understanding of her struggles. He pauses then says, "I'm sorry". Rachel asks him to buy her a cup of coffee.

I am thinking the intervention will work because the daughter and dad will work out their differences...and while they do, new drama will insue:
the daugther will get involved with Brad...Brad's never really had a love angle in the show, and it's about time. Sounds like they are setting us up for this.
Hmmm, maybe. If Rachel were to go away for treatment, Brad might find himself out in the cold. I agree with you, though, Ty. It's nice to see Brad interested in someone for a change!
I'm glad Rene Auberjonois is finally on a series with good writing. He's been an effective character actor for over 30 years in movies & TV, but he's finally getting a chance to show how good he really is. Being stuck on a show like "Benson" wasn't going to do that.
I have a soft spot for him. He was Father Mulcahy in the movie version of "M*A*S*H".

A diabetic would have something completely different, Nancy. For one thing, there'd be a glucometer, a box of lancets, and a diabetic would NEVER reuse a needle (unless they were totally broke, but even then, they could get new ones free from a medical clinic).
Auberjonois has been doing a fantastic job with this story line and I'm very interested to see where this leads. I envision him ending up with custody of his granddaughter while his daughter sobers up (or ends up dead).
