Region 1 DVD Releases for March 7th, 2006

This week, we start with the most expensive movie in Hollywood history (until Superman Returns comes out).
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Widescreen Two-Disc Deluxe Edition)
For a film that matched its huge financial success (the only movie to make more money last year had the word Sith in the title) with solid critical support, this fourth installment was strangely shut out of technical awards at last night's Oscars, hardly receiving a nod, much less a win. Regardless, this stands out as one of the most entertaining, well-put-together films of last year, appropriate for what many consider to be the best book in the series. The characters begin to grow libidos, adding a significant, but not annoying, Buffy-ish vibe to the proceedings. And, of course, we finally get to see He Who Must Not Be Cast, with a wonderful turn by Ralph Fiennes. This is the first in the series to actually feel creepy. Strangely, it's also the most beautiful. And how can you beat Radiohead and Jarvis Cocker as the house band?
Extras include a game demo, at least one featurette for each task in the Tri-Wizard tournament, interviews with the cast, and additional scenes.
Jarhead - Collector's Edition (Widescreen)
Although not a perfect film, there are several elements that make this Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition) effort worth a look. Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx, and Peter Sarsgaard all give career-top-five performances. Roger Deakins' cinematography is absolutely gorgeous (kind of a distrubing statement for a war film). And the irony of one of the last lines in the film (about Sadaam and Iraq) nearly makes the whole journey worth it.
The Collector's Edition is well-tricked out with commentary, deleted scenes, insights from legendary editor Walter Murch (whose own Apocalypse Now appears in the film), and plenty of interviews and footage with real-life U.S. Marines.
Howl's Moving Castle
The latest exercise in painterly confusion by Japanese animation maestro Hayao Miyazaki.
The one extra that might make this whole thing worth it: Hayao Miyazaki visits Pixar with John Lasseter.
Just Friends
Hey, look! It's Ryan Reynolds in a fat suit! If that doesn't do it for you, you might want to look elsewhere.
You'd think there wouldn't be enough material for nine featurettes on this film, but you'd be wrong.
Prime
You'd think that putting Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman together in a movie from the writer/director of the underrated Boiler Room might produce interesting results. Again, you'd be wrong.
Extras include director and producer's commentary, deleted scenes, outtakes, and something called...wait for it..."Prime-Time Players." Now that's how you name a special feature.
