CD Review: Honor By August - Drowning Out the Television
Published March 04, 2006
What’s the 4-1-1?
Debut album for the Washington, DC, natives.
Genre
Modern rock / pop-rock / alternative / indie
The Good
“Only in Photographs” delivers some great harmonized vocal choruses and pleasing acoustic guitar tones. “Opportunity” recalls a strong R.E.M. influence, with more energy and emotion. “Overnight” has a nice bounce to it, as drums and guitars jockey for dominance. Vocalist Michael Pearsall delivers his best performance on the moving power ballad “Honesty.” “The Quiet Sky” starts off subtle and mellow, but builds to a powerful chorus.
The Bad
Honor By August doesn’t really stand out from today’s standard rock-band pack.
The Verdict
Great vocals and songwriting, but I’ve heard this sound way too many times before.
Did You Know?
Honor By August won the Bon Jovi/XM Radio "Have a Nice Gig" contest, earning a chance to open for Bon Jovi at the MCI Center in Washington, DC.
Rating: 3 out of 5
