Blogcritics Editors' Picks of the Week (Feb. 15 - Feb. 21): More Than Words
Published February 24, 2006
No time for chatter, let's hop right to it, laddy bucks and lassie buckets.
Music
Music Editor Connie Phillips chose:
CD Review: Paul McCartney's Chaos and Creation in the Backyard by DJ Radiohead
This is a really nice and balanced review, which begins with the admittance of buying the CD only after making a comment that wasn't well received. Chaos and Creation in the Backyard has been the subject of many articles here in the past months, and this is one of the better ones.
CD Review: Secret Life of the Veronicas by Mark Saleski
More good stuff this week from Mark. He gives a balanced and full look at this CD in his engaging and enjoyable way.
DVD Review: The Velvet Underground - Velvet Redux Live MCMXCIII by El Bicho
Not only a review but a history lesson mixed with a bit of life experience. This is informative, entertaining and enjoyable.
List of the Moment Number 4 by Sadi Ranson-Polizzotti
In what has become a reoccurring feature from Sadi, she shares a bit of what she's listening to at the moment balanced with some wonderful commentary.
SciTech Editor Lisa McKay chose:
CD Review: 77 by Talking Heads by Thomas L. Knapp
The reviewer was too young to appreciate this music when it was originally released, but he clearly gets where it came from. A nice job of placing the music in the context of its lineage (and reminding me to put this one on my Amazon wish list).
Books
Books Editor Natalie Bennett chose:
Book Review: Chang and Eng by Darin Strauss by Gordon Hauptfleisch
Gordon says that Strauss is excellent in "effectively melding fact — and an engrossing dose of social history." The reviewer manages the same, in telling the story of the first internationally known pair of "Siamese twins" and their amazing life, and the unusual nature of a text that melds fiction and imagination.
Reflecting on Reading vs. Watching by Diane Kristine
Diane brings an open mind to the long-time question of whether reading or watching a moving image is more enriching, which is well-worth debating in this multi-media age.
SciTech Editor Lisa McKay chose:
On Writing and Self-Publishing: Part 3 by John Spivey
If, like me, you've ever bought a book because you were attracted to its cover, you'll appreciate this installment of John's series on self-publishing, in which he makes a solid case for why the outward appearance of a book is as important as the contents.
