PSP Review: Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max

If you've been waiting for that must-have PSP title, then wait no longer. Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max is that killer app for the PSP. This game packs all the Street Fighter fun that fans have come to love all over the years. This is a direct conversion of the critically acclaimed arcade fighting game and is enhanced with additional original content specifically designed for the portable system including Wi-Fi functionality and extra game play modes.

Fans of the Street Fighter series will love having the ability to play on the go. What they might not like is the bad D-Pad controls. It's often hard to jump using the directional pad, but easy with the analog stick. But it's almost impossible to pull off a fireball or a dragon punch with the analog stick. But it doesn't stop your level of fun in the game at all. Once you get a hang of the control system you'll be battle your way up to M. Bison in no time.

New to this version of Street Fighter Alpha 3 are the new game modes. And trust me, these new modes are addictive. The best mode is the Dramatic Battle Mode. You pick your champion and then put your skills to the test against two Street Fighter characters. Then there is 100 Mode. Get ready for this mode because it's not easy. Pick your champion and battle him/her in 100 deadly fights. On our first try and 67 minutes later we got our butts kicked 67 times and won 33 fights. But there are still a slew of other modes that will keep your fingers pounding on the PSP for hours.

But what's Street Fighter without being able to play against someone else? Well fear not, the PSP version of Street Fighter 3 Alpha Max allows you to connect to another PSP via the NETWORK mode. In network mode you have four different ways to play. You can play in VS Mode where you'll go head-to-head against a friend. Then Team Mode lets you form a team of three characters and then fight your friends custom-made team. Variable Battle lets you take three players into a fight, two controlled by human players and the third under CPU control. And finally, there's Dramatic Battle, where three players can fight simultaneously for all the bragging rights.

Overall Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max is the game that all PSP owners must have. I'm sure you'll be seeing guys on the trains of NYC battling each other. New characters, new content, and new game play modes make this one of the best games released for the PSP to date. The controls leave a lot to be desired for the game but once fans get used to it they'll be having a butt-kicking good time.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max is a rated T (Teen) by the ESRB for Violence.

Dramatic Battle was in the Dreamcast version. It's not new.

If you pre-ordered the game you got a D-pad replacement. It permanently sticks to the PSP, but makes this game and Darkstalkers a lot better. I have also had no problems playing other games with the new D-pad. It is a shame that is is permanent, and according to CAPCOM, may void your warranty.

Oh ok I brought mine from the store directly so I didn't get the D-pad replacement. I still enjoy the game but wish the controls where better fresh out the box. How does the replacement d-pad work anyway?

It has 4 adhesive pads that stick rather snugly to the PSP d-pad buttons. It makes quarter circles and all other advanced moves much easier to pull off.

I am a huge fan of Darkstalkers and now I can pick that game up (again) since I have this d-pad.

They announced the d-pad for Japanese pre-orders and was just thrilled to hear they would have them for US pre-orders to!
