Last Chance for Firefly?
Published February 01, 2006
As if you needed another illustration of how life is unfair, consider that Dancing with the Stars is back for a second season, (along with Skating with Celebrities), yet Firefly got cancelled after less than one season.
Captain Mal and his crew traveled the far reaches of the galaxy, staying away from the Alliance. They fared better than the show did with Fox, and after the movie Serenity had lackluster box office results, it appeared that there was no future either as a series or as a movie franchise.
Some people never give up, however. If you go to the home of "Firefly Season 2 on Demand", you will find a group of people trying to determine if there would be demand for a second season of the show, either by monthly DVD deliveries, TV On-Demand using your cable or satellite provider, or computer viewing via Streaming Download.
If you are a fan, go and fill out the survey - otherwise the Network Alliance will be bringing us nothing but dancing and skating almost-stars, and more Donald Trump.

Yeah, how were the DVD sales for Serenity? My best friend and I went to see it at least one a week the whole time it was in the theater here (man did they get a lot of our money!) I know Firefly got a lot of its fanbase once it was available on DVD and running reruns on Sci-Fi. I think one of those pay cable stations like Showtime should pick it up. It was expensive sets and what not- but look at the other epic dramas and such on those type of stations (I mean Rome looks pretty involved to me!)
Heh, one would think that a site with "critics" in its title would be more critical about mysterious efforts such as this one.
Fans of the series and movie have debated this "season 2" website and proposal rather vigorously, and any mention of the site itself without concurrent mention of what's been discussed and/or dug up is a mentnion that's incomplete.

Unfortunately, it seems I can't provide all the URLs you would need to fully inform yourself, because there's a limit imposed in comments, heh. So you're all stuck with only two.
I realistically don't see another big screen movie, at least anytime soon. I definitely see The SciFi Channel (owned by Universal who bankrolled Serenity) producing and airing any future movies. If anything, it would me more cost effective for SciFi to film more that one movie at a time, and just space the movies for both ratings build-up and DVD sales. I believe that if Joss wants the long-rumored movie trilogy in order to wrap up the Firefly storylines, this would be his best chance.
Another complication is that Joss is finishing up work on a Wonder Woman movie script and is also doing some work on the X-Men comic series, so his availability is limited for a while.
We kept the BDH flying, so we can do it again.
I want to see a 2nd Season of Firefly, and if not that at least 2 sequels to "Serenity" Because Joss still has those stories to tell, and he is the master story teller.
I am waiting for my copy of the DVD of the Big Damn Movie which will be released next week in Australia, and I know of a lot of other fans who are also anxiously awaiting its release.

Just wanted to let you know that your article is now appearing on Cleveland.com!

Last time I looked Serenity grossed about $39-million worldwide (box office) and cost $35-million to produce. I have no idea how it did on DVD.
I suspect (unfortunately) that it failed to clear enough to warrent the launch of another season but it might have reached the point whereby a couple of straight-to-DVD movies or some made-for-TV movies might be financially viable.
I hope they can pull something together. I had never seen the TV series but the movie was excellent. I'd gladly apy to see a sequal.
