DVD Review: Last Best Chance
Published January 12, 2006
Jon Gries and Fred Dalton Thompson star in this speculative piece of thriller fiction. Unlike much of Hollywood's recent output, Last Best Chance pulls no punches on the danger the West faces from nuclear-armed Islamic terrorists. There is useful idiot/traitorous professor selling parts to a bomb to the Islamists, corrupt guards from a former Soviet base and lax border guards, in addition on the terrorists bent on destroying a major US city with nuclear material.
This is not some right-wing-fest either, as the Co-Chairman of the Nuclear Threat Institute, which produced this movie, is none other than the Republican-phobe Ted Turner. Others involved include Sam Nunn, Jessica Metthews from the Carnegie Endowment for Peace and the Rt Hon. Prof Shirley Williams, a Liberal Democraft member of the House of Lords here in the UK. This is just a cross-section of the wide range of people involved in this organisation from all parts of the political spectrum world-wide. There is a "serious" discussion about the film included on the DVD, hosted by Tom Brokaw.
As a piece of fiction it makes for quite enjoyable viewing and the acting, unlike in many such movies, is first rate. It is as violent as you would expect from any Hollywood international thriller.
The film ends, however, just as the plot gets going, as if to emphasise the fact that the ending could be changed if something is done about the problem. The facts in this movie are meddled into the plot well and there are no "lectures" as you might find in most most of this type. It is clearly a fairly well-budgeted film and of good quality.
Of course the nice thing about this movie is that anyone can get it for nothing (not even postage!) from Last Chance. I have to say it makes some interesting points and it's a decent film to boot.
