The Superbowl of Love or Clash of the Titans?

Tonight, in just three hours, the Superbowl of Love makes its debut on CBS when Oprah Winfrey makes her debut on Dave's CBS version of his talk show. It's been 16 years since Oprah and Dave have shared the stage in a talk show. Initial reports from the Big Apple indicate that the crowd outside the Ed Sullivan Theater was the largest since The Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan's Show back in the early 60's. So massive was the crowd that the street had to be blocked off to traffic. After the taping of the show, Letterman escorted Oprah across the street to the Broadway Theater for the official opening of The Color Purple - A New Musical, Winfrey's first massive Broadway venture.

News of the Superbowl of Love has made it to far east Malaysia where the Malaysian The Star Online is calling the Winfrey visit Clash of the Titans. Top Ten lists are springing up on websites all over the world. The one from The Star is especially fun:

Top Ten Questions Dave should ask Oprah:

10. Who do you love more - Steadman Graham or Gail King?
9. Who would win in a mud wrestling contest - you or Martha Stewart?
8. Are Julia Roberts and John Travolta really your "bestest" friends?
7. Did you feed Tom Cruise anti-depressants before he appeared on your show?
6. Where do you keep all your money?
5. Why do you always put yourself on the cover of your magazine?
4. What other shops have turned you away since you inconveniently arrived when they are closing?
3. How much do you weigh today and how much did you weigh yesterday?
2. Am I really your favorite talk show host?
1. Will you ever invite me to your talk show after today?

I, for one, cannot wait. This has been something I've anticipated since Paul Schaffer and the CBS Orchestra started playing "It Ain't Oprah 'Til It's Oprah" four years ago. Thank you, Oprah. You've made my night. This is almost as good as when Dave came back after his heart surgery. It ranks up there with the birth of Harry Letterman. Tonight the 2006 Tony Award winning The Color Purple - New Musical officially opens. But before that, Oprah's breaking the ice and warming up the once freezing Ed Sullivan Theater. Thanks, Oprah. And, if per chance Dave becomes a father nine months from now, I hope's it's a girl and he names it OPRAH!

It ain't Oprah til it's Oprah...

Hopefully, when it's Oprah, Lady O and Dave will be bestest friends. (I just hope he doesn't suck up too much.) Then again, it won't be Oprah for me until Dave is invited to the Windy City.

Can't wait!

I hope he goes to Chicago, too. He owes her that much. This could be the start of something good for Dave. He's taken a lot of hits but CBS and his fans are behind him. Once you fall in love with Dave, there's no turning back!

I know; I've loved him since his morning show. But I must disagree: He deserves a trip to Chicago -- Oprah owes him.

Well, it's over now. Oprah and Dave have hugged and appeared to enthusiastic crowds. Then Dave took her by the hand and escorted her to the premiere of The Color Purple. The television event of the decade came to an end. Now I can have that cigarette. I am satiated. I am satisfied. It's OPRAH!

It was good. One thing I learned, though, is that Oprah obviously does not watch Dave's show. How could she not be aware that he is very capable of incisive, substantive interviews with guests in whom he is truly interested. She seems to have kept her distance because of say-so and hype. Glad she's over it now. And I am so glad that Dave did a masterful job. I hope he squashed that Leno in the ratings.

And as I said, for me it won't be Oprah until she invites him to do her show in Chicago. As of now, it looks like she used him and the publicity to push her play.

Sure Oprah used him to promote The Color Purple. More power to her. I'm anticipating the ratings report later this morning and I'm with you. Not only do I hope that Dave squashed him, but I want to see Leno's chin hit the floor. Oops, there's not much distance between the two is there?

I've always loved Letterman and his take on his "feud" with Oprah. Last night was hilarious and, dare I say, monumental. Now that's some good TV. It's hard to believe some people still prefer Leno over Dave!

I honestly believe that the ratings system used in this country is flawed. I can't for a minute believe that Leno commands a huge lead over Dave. Any real Letterman fan has always known how special he really is. He's passionate, fiercely loyal, very up on current events. He's very much like Johnny Carson in the way he protects his privacy and personal views; but, every now and then they come to the surface.
