CD Reviews: Single/EP Round-up
Published November 20, 2005
Here are some quick reviews of indie band releases.
A 3-song collection of competent, if not very unique, indie-pop from an obviously talented band. Production is well done and crisp, which goes along way at making this CD tolerable. "March 15th," the lead-off track, is rather good at what it does. Kyran is definitely a good band to watch. In today's market, I would not be too shocked to see the band get a deal rather soon. Watch this space.
Dirty Perfect
(Fuzzbox)
More 3-minute (more or less) indie pop-rock that is so common in the UK charts these days. You won't find much that is original in these four tracks. The music is well played and produced, but that's about it. The most interesting track here is "Condo Royale," which has a bit of The Strokes feel about it with a rather catchy chorus that makes it stand out. Not exactly cutting edge stuff, but competent nonetheless.
Tricky Nixon
(Fuzzbox)
Unlike the Kyran and Dirty Perfect CDs, this one has quite a bit going for it with its poppy chirpy-chappy vibe. "Kick" is a great pop song that catches the listener from the get-go and holds on all the way through. It has that little bit extra to make it interesting, the factor X. "Billy Zane" is an equally strong track. In general, you'll find a certain quality of craftsmanship throughout this five-track EP. There are even a few Cars-isms, a band set to make a new record next year, in the track "Silverdolls". Quality wise, you won't find a duff track on this release. Certainly the pick of the bunch of the three reviews on offer here.
