In this pick, Sterfish delivers a well constructed, detailed review that left me very interested in giving a band I've never heard before a serious listen.

==========
TV/FILM: Joan Hunt's picks of the week

David Wester digs deep for a fresh look at a wonderful movie from Down Under. Walkabout is a fairly unknown movie - unknown except to those of us who like the unusual and beautiful. NOV. 3

Jenifer (with one "n") Gonzales hit the nail (with one "n") on the head with a flawless debut article on Shopgirl. Not only does she touch upon the nuances of casting and writing, she does so with style. OCT. 31.

Michael Girardi covered classic turf in his review of Easy Street, a fantastic Charlie Chaplin movie. Everyone knows about the Little Tramp, but Michael delves into the origins of the comic genius to give us a look at why Chaplin deserved the accolades he received over the years. OCT. 31

==========
BOOKS: Pat Cummings' picks of the week

Review:Flirting With Pride & Prejudice by Bill Wallo NOV. 1

One phrase from the review - "Jane Austen and the Masturbating Critic" - says it all. Bill's expertise at pulling evocative quotes is apparent once again as he reviews this collection of essays on Austen's masterwork, and muses about the ongoing popularity of "the original chick-lit."

Review: Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt by Rick Stilwell NOV. 3

Rick speaks well of Anne Rice's departure from the vampire genre, but points out the discomfort some will have with her venture into the off-Scripture life of Christ. This novel is sure to provoke plenty of off-topic discussion, so it's good that the first review here is focused on Rice's actual work.

Review:A Beginner's Guide to Reality by Jim Baggott by Jeliel NOV. 4

Ever been captured by an alluring cover, and discovered a whole new universe as a result? Jeliel takes us along on his own voyage of discovery with science philosopher Jim Baggott. Although the book Jeliel reviews is not, alas, available on Amazon US yet, it is to be found on Amazon UK. From Plato, Kant, and Descartes to Heisenberg and Hawking, Baggott's book sounds like a fun (if abstruse) ride.

Editors' Picking Editors

Blogcritics Special Projects Director Temple Stark picked Christian Values on Halloween by Dave Nalle, Oct. 31 for two reasons. It could make parents think what they're really teaching their children about the past versus the future when it comes to how non-religious holidays are celebrated to begin with and 2) It elicited this comment from Silas Kain, which kept on popping in my head at inappropriate times, making me laugh (sorry mayor) ::: I think I'll go out as Christ next year complete with Cross and a couple of veiled wailing women in tow.

#3 — November 6, 2005 @ 22:26PM — Michael J. West

Thanks so much Temple, and Connie, I'm quite flattered!

Um, so I hope I'm not being ungrateful if I point out that the link on my article's title doesn't actually go to the article in question.

It goes here.

My actual article is here.

#4 — November 6, 2005 @ 22:35PM — Jenifer [URL]

Wow, thank you! And on my first piece! Better get crackin' on some more reviews (I've got two in the hopper right now!).

#5 — November 6, 2005 @ 22:49PM — Mike Kole [URL]

I appreciate the vote, er, pick! Linkage has been added to my blog.

#6 — November 6, 2005 @ 23:30PM — David Wester [URL]

Awesome. Thanks for the votes/picks.

#7 — November 7, 2005 @ 00:07AM — Matthew T. Sussman [URL]

Ooh, a "comment of the week." Methinks that should be a new feature.

#8 — November 7, 2005 @ 00:10AM — Dave Nalle

Got to agree on that, Matthew. A comment of the week isn't a bad idea, except for the wading through all those comments to find one if one doesn't just pop out.

"Nine tenths of education is encouragement." - Anatole France."

Excellent, and makes so much sense I suspect he wasn't really French.
