Movie Recommendations For Halloween
Published October 27, 2005
Halloween is just around the corner, and that means it's time for some good horror movies. If the only movies you can think of are Halloween and A Nightmare On Elm Street, below are lesser-known horror movies of quality that may interest you.
The Devil's Backbone - A Spanish movie about a haunting at an orphanage during a war. This movie was directed by the same director who did "Mimic".
Dark Water - The Japanese original, not the American remake. This movie delves into a rather popular theme in Japanese movies - the breakdown of the family. It is about a divorcing woman and her young daughter who move into a rundown apartment complex that has spooky problems with leaking water.
Kwaidan - Another Japanese horror film, this one from the 1960s. It is comprised of four ghost stories. I especially liked "The Snow Woman". All four stories are very good.
Dead Birds - This little-known movie deserves more widespread attention. It takes place during the Civil War. A group of bank robbers hide out in an old abandoned farmhouse, and find out that they are far from alone. There is one particular scene that will make you jump out of your skin. I won't say what it is and ruin it for you.
The Haunting - The original, not that abyssmal remake. Directed by Robert Wise. This classic horror film was based on Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. After you watch the movie, read the novel.
The Changeling - This classic horror film stars George C. Scott as a musician who moves into an old house after the deaths of his wife and daughter. The story behind the haunting is so good you would suspect the movie was based on a novel. This movie won several awards.
Cat People - The original, not the remake. Very atmospheric and creepy. Perfect for a dark, stormy night.

If you are into games, one you will definitely want to play during the Halloween season is Dark Fall. You play the brother of a man who is an architect. Your brother is restoring an old 1930s train station hotel. You receive a letter from your brother that is in such a panicked tone that you race to the hotel to check up on him. You are alone in the hotel as you search for clues as to your brother's whereabouts, but you are not really alone. Play this game in the dark while wearing headphones. You need to hear the sounds as they emerge around you. This is one very creepy game.

And finally, a very creepy Internet flash game. The Hospital. This one will warp your mind.
Enjoy your Halloween!
