DVD Review: Audition

Why not a Dr. Pepper? Stephen and I discussed this movie later - and we are still finding some holes. I'm sure if we watched it again, then we would discover some things we missed. Equally, something might have been lost in translation. Regardless, there was a prolonged dream/fainting sequence that tried desparately to fill all the holes they had created in the first 85% of the movie. They got most of them, but not enough to really think, "wow, now that is a Dr. Pepper!" Instead, this movie is a solid Pad Thai.
I think most people will like this movie. That's the benefit to the whole character development - its makes it a little more than just horror, and I think you will respect that. Plus there is a newness that you can appreciate. And, like in many horror movies, women kick some butt. I can't wait until America takes it, makes the blood squirt, and drops the depth for a few more scares. It'll feel like home.

I guess so, as long as you aren't dating a cute little asian girl with a high propensity for chopping your head off and sticking needles under your eyes.
Man...
The tongue on the floor...
The bag that rolls over and what comes out of it...
The little whispering 'tetetetetetet' noise she makes while wiggling the needles in...
They way they suggest in the (otherwise kind of distacting) dream sequence that the abused who become the abuser aren't seeking justice or even power, they just kind of got off on the abuse and the evil of it and passively accepted abuse and passively follow the worn track to abuser...
All amazing stuff.
Here's my cynical guesses at how Hollywood will screw this moview up when they do their own version:
1) Someone will see the great satirical jab they could take at Reality TV with the audition process, but... he'll end up meeting her on the Internet because someone else will see more metamarketing potential if they meet on the Internet.
2) The ideal American woman just can't be that docile, which means the woman in the American version will just be seeking revenge/justice, which will remove the whole creepy servile/sadastic element.
3) They'll see this story has potential to go beyond the traditional horror audience with the scary relationship elements, so they'll flash some real gore on screen, but they won't do anything to drive it home.
Ohhhh, this movie... creeps the hell out of me. It's like, slow, drama, build up, build up... OH MY GOD THE BASTARD CHILD OF DAVID LYNCH AND TOBE HOOPER ATE A BUNCH OF BROWN ACID AND TOOK OVER THE LAST HALF HOUR OF THE FILM!
That's how I see it, anyway. Might just be me. But I LOVE this movie.

The use of sound in this film is amazing -- especially near the end.
Might make a good date movie, too.
