POLITICS: Lisa McKay's Picks of the Week

Should we be choosing Presidents because of their gender? In Feminist World Politics: Bash Bush, Push Hillary, Adam Ash tells us why a woman President would be a good thing, not just for the US, but for the world. Would the scene really be different if a woman was the leader of the free world?

David Flanagan, in And The Band Drones On..., gives us a well-written, albeit partisan, look at the relevance (or lack thereof) of Plame-gate to the 2006 elections.

FILM/TV: Joan Hunt's picks of the week
(Asst editor Legendary Monkey Girl, with brains and braun - just not as much of one of them as TV/ FILM Editor Joan Hunt)

Maximum Quadrophenia by Ed Driscoll, Oct. 21
Thanks to Ed Driscoll, I now know more about The Who than I thought I might ever need to know, and yet somehow I couldn't stop reading. Check out his incredibly thorough Maximum Quadrophenia and maybe you'll learn something, too.

DVD Review: The Searchers by Pacze Moj Oct. 19
Pacze Moj weighs and measures The Searchers, a film held by many to be one of the great Westerns and finds it somewhat lacking — and does it all with some lovely imagery and research. A must-read for anyone who doesn't like to take what "they" say on the face.

DVD REVIEW Kingdom of Heaven by Bill Wallo, Oct. 17
Bill Wallo set out to explore a weaker hero in a strong film and ended up examining Ridley Scott's catalogue as a director. His look at the DVD Kingdom of Heaven is heaven indeed for hardcore film buffs. No cinematic stone is left unturned.

CULTURE: Lisa Hoover's picks of the week

NBA: Need Business Attire by Brian St. Brian, Oct. 20
Brian St. Brian cries buckets for NBA player Allen Iverson who's whole world has been thrown into a tailspin because he might actually have to shell out $19.95 for a necktie.

Baseball Playoffs and the Peril of an Average Culture by Christopher J. Falvey, Oct. 17
Christopher J. Falvey says "We're evolving into a culture where averageness is the most desired quality." Is he talking about elementary school education? How we choose our politicians? Sports? The answer is C: All of the above.
