Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx, and Peter Sarsgaard star in Universal Pictures' Jarhead, the adaptation of Marine Anthony Swofford's bracing memoir that took readers into his
disorienting first hand experience in the Gulf War. Jarhead is directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition).

BlogCritics' readers have the opportunity to win t-shirts, hats, posters, and even passes to the pre-release screenings* in New York (November 1) and Los Angeles (November 2).

How to Enter

Answer the following questions via e-mail:

The first half is based on the book

  • 1) Near the beginning of the book, a reporter from the New York Times comes to visit Swofford's platoon in the desert. He later sends them a box of items they've requested. Name three of the items for which they asked.
  • 2) Swofford has a short affair with a Japanese girl in Okinawa. What is her name?
  • 3) Who recommends that Swofford look into becoming a scout/sniper for STA?
  • 4) After the war, whose funeral does Swofford attend in Michigan?
  • 5) How many sets of dog tags did Swofford steal from the bodies of dead Iraqi soldiers?

General Marine Corps trivia

  • 6) What year was the motto "Semper Fidelis" officially adopted by the Marines?
  • 7) Who, or what, was "Siwashi"?
  • 8) What is the piping on the trousers of Marine Corps officers and NCOs called?
  • 9) True or False: On a warship, Marines will man the rail.
  • 10) Extreme(ly silly) Challenge: While Gomer Pyle is eating at Wong's Chinese Restaurant, what does he find in his soup?
    A. A diamond
    B. Belt buckle
    C. Chicken foot
    D. Dice

Leave a comment and let us know if you're in, or near, New York or Los Angeles and would like to attend one of the screenings. For consideration in the contest, e-mail your trivia answers to Jarhead Giveway. Please do not leave answers to trivia questions in the comments section. As a fromer Marine the movie did the Marines proud as far as training goes. Almost as good as Full Metal Jacket. The only disapointment was the movie review in Parade Mag., the the paper by fat Ebert when he stated it's a great movie about soldiers in war. Mo soldiers in the movie fat man. All Marines, and as any former Marine will tell you, soldiers are Army. If you called yourself a soldier they would beat the hell out of you. They don't call troops in the Army Marines, so get it right you idiot reporters and call us Marines. One of the few the proud. Lt. T.J. Pinkerton Marine retired 67
