Bill Bennett - Racist, Ignorant, or Both?

Nowhere in his comments were racial overtones discernable. Bill then took it upon himself to inject the stereotype of blacks being pre-disposed to criminal activity.

While it is true that black males have a much higher rate of incarceration and commit more violent crimes than their white counterparts, it is extremely important to find the reasons for said behavior as opposed to assuming a racial component.

The vast majority of violent crimes are committed by the socio-economically disadvantaged, irrespective of race. For historic reasons (slavery, overt and covert racism) this applies to blacks at a much higher percentage. Additionally, laws are written or implemented in manners that disproportionately punish blacks more harshly. (Crack cocaine convicts get harsher sentences than cocaine convicts; blacks get harsher sentences for comparable crimes.)

Entry into the justice system is generally through the first responders, the police. Many studies in many states have shown that police are predisposed to stereotype black males. Moreover, black males do not get the breaks that white males get for minor indiscretions.

In my predominantly white, upper middle-class neighborhood, it is customary for police to escort teenage boys home for drunk driving, bad behavior, illegal drinking, or fights. In most black neighborhoods, the resolution is the immediate teenager's entry into the justice system. That one event changes the entire outcome of that black teenager's life and his outlook on the rest of life. He now has nothing to lose.

Bill Bennett-type conservatives believe in simplistic solutions without analyzing the real causes for our country's problem in general and crime in particular. They believe that law and order on black boys is a major part of the solution. That simplistic approach only fills prisons with a large quantity of angry black males who upon release will effect their wrath from the criminal knowledge acquired in prison.

Crime must be punished. Excuses must not be made for any criminal, black or white. It is important, however, to solve underlying problems that predisposes people to commit crimes. Laws must be written equitably. First responders must be educated on the negative effects of stereotyping and must be punished when such stereotyping can be proved.

Very interesting post, but I don't think that it's fair to say that Bennett's caustic remark came from nowhere. The caller was arguing that if abortion were illegal social security wouldn't be in trouble. Bennett's response was right on the mark. Essentially (and not very articulately), he pointed out that if you want to defend an anti-abortion view in this way, you have to consider ALL of the consequences of criminalizing abortion -- in particular, you have to take into account the possible rise in crime.

Now, as for Bennett having a simplistic view of the causes of black crime, I'm with you all the way.

I'm a negro and Ive read enough stormfront and National Alliance rhetoric to know that, although I've never been arrested, eventually I will be because I was born Black...that sucks, cause I dont want to go to jail. But I have no choice I guess. Toledo is a prime example! Those black rioted because they couldnt help it. Their skin compelled them to! Now where are some white women that I can rape?

Cooooooon,

Your type sarcasm is what divides people. It is important to understand the underlying dynamics of all actions. Only then can one solve the problem.

Many doctors see a patient with high blood pressure and simply subscribe beta blockers. Better physicians do an inexpensive blood workup to determine whether the high blood pressure is a result of some other problem (kidney failure etc). Thorough doctors do the above and further monitor as they know that underlying problems usually require intelligent thought and analysis (high blood pressure can caused kidney damage but also kidney damage's effect can be high blood pressure).

BTW, it is unlikely you are "negro" as your sarcasm borders on self hate.

This comment by Bennett re the aborting of black babies and its positive effect on crime rates, is both offensive and stupid.

You can no longer play the race card when it comes to crime stats. A lot of so-called "black" people in the USA have at least one or more forebears who are white. For example if an African male marries a Swedish woman, the children will be called "black" simply because they skin has some pigmentation. But since their racial mix is exactly 50/50, they could also be legitimately be called white.

Politically also, it is very unhelpful to engage in this kind of rhetoric. I don't know what Bennett was thinking about when he let this fly, but he would do well to pause and inhale next time round.

Crime is generally caused by people with economic problems. We have a society that needs money to survive, if you can't get it legally...

Blacks, probably due to the lingering effects of discrimination, have less economic opportunity that whites. Therefore more blacks find themselves in economic difficulties that whites. Given that whites and blacks are equally prone to commit criminal acts, simply the greater number of blacks in economic difficulties would create a greater number of black criminals that white criminals.
There is no racial stereotyping here, it is nothing more than a numbers game.
