New Album Releases, Week of 9-27-2005

Part of New CDs

There are quite a few intriguing box sets this week, and numerous big name albums from Neil Young and Gretchen Wilson among others.

Surprisingly, a recording of a live jazz concert from 1957, Thelonius Monk Quartet with John Coltrane, is the #9 seller today at Amazon.

Neil Young's new Prairie Wind CD is the #1 Amazon album, apparently a now third Harvest style album, which is perhaps his most musical approach.

I really WANT to like Gretchen Wilson, but the record just wasn't very good. She has a second album out today, All Jacked Up. We'll see if it's any better. Plus, the CD is in two versions, one a couple dollars cheaper but purposely corrupted with copy protection nonsense. Caveat emptor.

There are several really tasty sounding box sets worth mentioning this week. Going from the merely tasty to the drool-inducing, there's Just Say Sire: The Sire Records Story which includes some KD Lang, Jonathan Richman, Brian Wilson, the Ramones, Smiths, M, the Pretenders, Madonna and Talking Heads along with a lots of lesser known pieces of grooviness.

There's a box set of the Band with a DVD and dozens of previously unreleased recordings.

100 Years of Jazz Guitar: Swinging on Strings sure sounds like something a fellow would need to hear.

Tastiest of box treats this week, The Complete Library of Congress Recordings of Jelly Roll Morton. Sweet.

Finally, it wouldn't be right if I did not note The Regis Philbin Christmas Album. How'd we get through all these past Yuletides without it? You have to wonder.

Anyone who's heard any of these albums is encouraged to leave notes in comments.

Unreformed hawkish Hoosier hillbilly Al Barger runs the still squeezin' down the psychodelic Kentucky moonshine at More Things. What with the paranoid religious visions, the Pentecostal music, visions of God and anarchy running amok and such, somebody oughta call the cops to report his out of control freedom of conscience. Till they come to take him away somewhere where he can't hurt anyone else, you can check out his weekly column of new album releases.

*scrolling down list...*
"The Regis Philbin Chrismas album is out this week!?!?!?!?
*grabs car keys, thermos of decaf coffee, sticky bun, and pack of Rollos, bursts out the door*
...one hour later...
*bursts into house, rips the new Ryan Cabrera cd out of the boombox, throws it against the wall, smashing it into thousands of glistening pieces. Gently and lovingly removes Regis Philbin Christmas cd from jewel case womb, and tenderly places it into boombox. Presses play, and...*
"Yes, YEs, YES, YESSSSSSS, Oh, oh, oh, Yes!!!!! God bless us, everyone!!!!!!"
*falls to the ground, clutching CD case to chest, gently stroking it and protecting it from any heathen that would do it harm*

a friend of mine who is a Coltrane fanatic is absolutely slobbering about the Monk/Coltrane release.

Big Al: "Tastiest of box treats this week, The Complete Library of Congress Recordings of Jelly Roll Morton. Sweet."

You said it. As a Jelly Roll fanatic, I'd have to own it, but it's... $97!?!

oy. Those GREEDY ASSHOLES!

Oh well, I already have almost all the music Jelly made (on various CDs), but if anyone wants to get Shark a present to celebrate the virgin birth of a mythological diety associated with the winter solstice, I'll be glad to accept this.

Thanks in advance,
S

p.s. that first Gretchen Wilson cd is quite good. don't trust big al on this.

#5 — September 27, 2005 @ 10:45AM — Tom Johnson [URL]

ALL Coltrane fans should be slobbering over this release - it's the only official live document of Monk and Coltrane together. Up until now, all that existed were really shoddy bootlegs. This is a major jazz release, for certain, and is one of the treasures dug up in the Library of Congress earlier this year. Too bad the Miles Davis Complete Cellar Door box has been delayed from release today, because it, the Monk/Coltrane, and the new Brad Mehldau would have made a great bunch of new jazz to listen to this week. I'll have to "get by" somehow with just Mehldau and Monk/Coltrane's albums.

#6 — September 27, 2005 @ 10:48AM — Mark Saleski [URL]

yea, i'll be picking it up for sure.

#7 — September 27, 2005 @ 11:02AM — JR

What about this one?

#8 — September 27, 2005 @ 11:21AM — Mark Saleski [URL]

hey, anybody know where there's a detailed track listing for that jazz guitar box? amazon is pathetic on this one.

#9 — September 27, 2005 @ 14:08PM — JR

Here. They don't have sound samples up yet, but they might have some in a week or two.

Hmmm, "Manic Depression"? I guess it does have a bit of swing in it...

#10 — September 27, 2005 @ 14:14PM — Mark Saleski [URL]

thanks!

hey, it is a pretty wide-ranging selection though. Charlie Christian to Derek Bailey.

#11 — September 27, 2005 @ 15:24PM — DJRadiohead [URL]

Let's talk a little guitar (pronounced GEE-tar).

Buddy. Guy.

I just bought the album and have listened to about 2/3 of it.

The best cuts are the ones without the guests (although Keith Richards manages to stay out of the way on "The Price You Gotta Pay"). Buddy Guy... still getting it done.

I also picked up the new Ryan Adams CD. I haven't listened to any of it yet. Some good stuff out there this week.

#12 — September 27, 2005 @ 15:51PM — Al Barger [URL]

Shark, re: the expensive Jelly Roll box, that's why God made libraries. This is just the kind of thing they're really good for. You might want to put in a special request for purchase, then copy them bad boys. You don't end up with the purty books and packaging, but for the price of a few blank CDs, hey.

#13 — September 27, 2005 @ 20:06PM — The Theory

I've been waiting for that new Blackalicious album for forever.

And that jazz boxset sounds awesome. Even if it only has one track from Django Reinhardt.

I'm surprised Al's list didn't include this new releases...

mercyme- The Christmas Sessions
BarlowGirl- Another Journal Entry
David Crowder Band- A Collision
Steven Curtis Chapman- All I Really Want for Christmas
Project 86- ...And The Rest Will Follow

#14 — September 28, 2005 @ 02:21AM — Al Barger [URL]

I've got me a Blackalicious album coming.

Those other albums didn't show up on AMG's list.

#15 — September 28, 2005 @ 02:23AM — Al Barger [URL]

Monsieur Saleski, if that first Gretchen Wilson album is so good, why don't you have a review up for it?

#16 — September 28, 2005 @ 13:46PM — Michael J. West [URL]

Al —

re Neil Young: now it's one thing if you like Harvest (I personally think it's one of his worst albums, but that's beside the point). But how is that approach (and it's four Harvest style records if you include Comes A Time) is any more MUSICAL than his other approaches?

#17 — September 28, 2005 @ 13:52PM — Mark Saleski [URL]

click right here big al.

#18 — September 28, 2005 @ 20:22PM — Tom Johnson [URL]

JR, that set is actually just Coltrane sitting in with the band, but not from Coltrane's time actually in Monk's quartet. So, technically, yes, there is a document of them together, but it's not the quartet he was a part of. Niggling details, yes, but still . . . . I haven't heard the set you link to, but it's got a reputation of being extremely low quality.

#19 — September 28, 2005 @ 23:28PM — Al Barger [URL]

Michael, generally the more electricity involved, the less effort it seems that Young puts into the composition and thinking things through. When he's doing these Crazy Horse albums with 10 minute songs, it tends to be a lot of half-assed jacking off. Whereas the Harvest albums appear to me to reflect more real effort.
