The 57th Emmy Awards
Published September 21, 2005
In some ways the Emmy Awards for excellence within the television industry bring up the rear among the four major awards shows. The Oscars, Grammys, and Tonys all have a glitz and performance appeal beyond the Emmys, which is essentially a TV show about TV.
Nonetheless, this year's show has generated quite a bit of buzz and commentary:
Lost Wins, But Doesn't Open Doors
Lost has won an Emmy, which can be seen as either a good thing or a bad thing for the science fiction community. Lost is the first show with heavy sci-fi elements to win an Emmy, true to form none of...

The Emmys Suck
I only Tivo'd the Emmys to see Adrian Grenier. Boy was I right. The Emmys suck. The cheesy production numbers have to go. They got Earth Wind and Fire to perform one of their songs with tacky new lyrics about...

Emmys: Reveling in irrelevance
The Emmys are over, and my euphoria of indulging in frivolous stargazing is tempered with my despondence that Hugh Laurie of House, M.D. didn't win his much-deserved award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. I was grudgingly prepared...

The Emmys: I'm Issuing Gag Orders
It's just after six p.m. on the west coast, two hours before the Emmys start for us. I've been working on a project all day long so that I have uninterrupted time later.

I'm just not a big awards show person. To me, award shows in general rank about 4th class behind talk shows, daytime shows, soap operas, and as far as uninteresting television.
Maybe I'll throw awards in front of soap operas, so let's call 'em third class.
I'll say the Emmys are 3rd. No one really cares about the Tonys except, y'know, theater nerds.
The caliber of stars who appear on the Tonys is way, way below the Emmys, which is in turn way below the Oscars. If you want to be accurate, I'd put the Golden Globes 3rd, before the Emmys.
That is all.
I don't usually watch them either, but the entertainment level of the Tonys -- the actuall performances -- is much higher than the Emmys: TV about TV.

no one is going to argue with me about the 4th class status of the Emmys, eh?
