Do You Mash?
Published September 10, 2005
What do others here think of mashing? I quite like it but some get grumpy about copyright issues.
But really, I'm hard-pressed to be sympathetic about George Bush at this
link, for example, having his words mashed so he is singing "Imagine" (Warning: adult language).
Here's a good primer on the topic via Wikipedia. Heaven forbid we should restrict anyone's sensibilities or copyrights. Next, the government will be getting the right to check our library records.
Oh, wait, too late.
Is anyone else outraged by this?
If you have a favorite mash up share a link here.

I like mash-ups, but most of them are poorly done.
There was a great mash-up of Justin Timberlake's "Rock Your Body" and "In Da Club" by 50 Cent a couple years back, though. And there are some good house tunes that are mash-ups that you all probably wouldn't know.
I've heard some other OK ones, but I can't think of them off-hand.
That is all.
What do others think?
I thought it was hilarious but maybe I'm just twisted.
Mash-ups are harmless, and most times (as I see it) meant for amusement. Copyright people should only get their panties in a bunch if the mashes are being sold. Free distribution of mash-ups should have similar rights to parodies.
If anything, making a good mash-up is an exercise in learning how difficult producing a song really is.
I think mashups are harmless ways of combining creativity with political statements.
I just posted a few new ones here, including one involving
remix/mashup Kayne West's infamous remarks about George Bush.
Warning: Adult lyrics
I posted some Halloween mashes over
at my blog
Here's a good 80s mashup
Some great mashups at GoHomeproductions

and the monkees vs beatles one
I'm listening tonite to some mashups, like
this one of David Bowie vs Devo
What good mashups are you listening to?
The mashup of Bush covering Lennon and Lou Reed no longer works so I'll point you to this one instead. Enjoy.
If you like let me know and I - and hopefully others - will find more.
The only one I heard was "Jumping Jack Flash" mashed with "Papa was a Rolling Stone". It sounded really cool. That Bush one is funny and original, but not really long lasting. It seems like just a new way for people to show some talent I guess. Is a collage art? To some yes and to some no. I think same goes for Mash-ups.
Yeah some are great and some suck.
The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby
vs
Madonna - Ray Of Light
and
The Beatles - Taxman
The Jam - Start
Beck - New Pollution
The Beatles - A Day In The Life
Both are here
