So You Think You Can Dance - The top ten battle it out
Published September 08, 2005
The competition gets even hotter on this week's episode of So You Think You Can Dance as the top ten performs for America's vote. First off, we said good-bye to two of the four dancers picked for elimination on last week's episode. America voted, and they sent Snow and Allan packing.
Allan has been a fan favorite, and it was sad for many to see the dancer affectionately called "Big Poppa" go home. However, in my opinion, it was the right decision for America to make. With each week that passes, we're going deeper into the competition. When it comes to technique, Allan just didn't have it outside of his chosen dance style of hip-hop. Now the technique must be there, and all Allan had going for him at this point was his personality.
Once eliminations were handled, competition began. However, a new twist was added. Instead of the couples performing once, they would now perform twice. Selection of partner and dance styles fell to the females.
With the high number of performances, we saw a greater variety of dance styles. In the first set of competitions, we saw pop, the tango, lyrical jazz, the quick step, and the samba. In my opinion, the two couples that stood out the most in this first set were Ashle and Blake, and Kamilah and Nick. The men of these two couples have performed well week after week. Blake and Ashle were paired up last week, and this couple shines together on stage. They were definitely my favorites here.
In the second set of performances, we once again saw pop, lyrical jazz and the quick step. This time around the addition of the foxtrot and hip-hop were added, giving another dimension to the competition. In this set, Destini and Jamile stole the show, and their performance by far was the best of the night - in both my opinion and the judges'.
It is clear to see that the dancers are stepping up their performances a great deal. They are working at their technique, and they want to win. With each week that passes, the judges are raising the bar with their critiques - with good reason. The dancers are expected to improve considerably and the judges are looking for those improvements. Each and every dancer left in the top ten deserves to be there.

HELP ME what was the song destini danced to for survival? on the 9/7 show i told my mom i could find it really easily but now i can't..... HELP ME
Destini is a great dancer, but she doesn't hold a candle to Melody. Until last night's performance, I also liked Destini's attitude / personality, but her comments at the end of her solo rubbed me the wrong way.
I think that Destini will DEFINITELY be going home next week, especially since Melody got the highest number of votes this week. I am, however, extremely disappointed to see Snow go home. I thought she was the best perfomer and dancer on the stage. She had the most personality and quirkiness out of everyone. I think that it was just horrible luck who she picked for partners week after week, and I would have loved to see her and Artem doing a ballroom or latin dance together.
I started to watch this show two weeks ago, and now I love it.
I do agree that Ryan should leave the show. He is a good acrobat, but I don't think he is a very good dancer.
About the girls... I don't know. Snow was my favorite, but she is gone now.
However, I think I would pick Destiny. Just because Melody has been very unlucky choosing her partners lately.
All they guys left in the show are very good versatile dancers (except for Ryan and Jamile). I think if Melody gets one more chance, and avoids peaking any of those two guys, she can definitely wow the audience.
Then, my votes are for Destini and Ryan. However, I know that the next eliminated (after Ryan) will be Jamile... You can not win such competition just by being a great hip-hop dancer.
Greetings
Man_Wako
P/S1: Does anybody know a place were I can watch or even download videos from past performances (I don't like what is available in the fox webpage).
P/S2: I loved Ashle and Blake's "Samba" performance... It was superb!!
However, that wasn't Samba... That was Latin Jazz
P/S3: What was the name of the quick step song that Jamile and Destini danced together??
Last night was great, the true talent has really started to show. I would say that the judges got it right for the men. Not being with the right partners for Melody and Destiny worked against them for sure. I do believe, however, Destiny should go for having such a horrible attitude. She got through 7 weeks without being called out and now she's pulling that ugliness. She's got to go!!!!!!!!!!!!! So she can quick step then pop and lock. She had fun with the quick step, she wasn't that great though!
Man Wako -- I can't remember which quick step was which (as far as the songs are concerned). One of the songs was Sing, Sing, Sing by Benny Goodman, right?
Jamile and Destini danced to Sing, sing, sing by the Swing Kids cast.
I LOVE RYAN!! OMGGG If ryan goes there would be NO POINT of watching the show!! Ryan and his freestyle ROCKED! While he was dancing during the last episode the whole crowd was calling his name...last week when Ryan and allen got picked for elimination on last week's episode and it's pretty ovbious ryan was going to stay but NOW I'm scared that Ryan might go!! NO NO NO!! AMERICAAA VOTE FOR RYAN!!
I am so bummed that I missed the show last night. I thought I had it recorded...but no. What were Destini's comments? I can't find that anywhere.
btw- Thanks for the recap. This was MUCH better than the Fox site!
Ryan, Ryan, Ryan. Even his name...!!! I could go on about this EXCITING adorable, unique piece of man-sexiness. Loved the latin dance numbers he performed to...Woooo!!!
I am afraid though, he will be voted off; although I for sure did my part to try and keep him in the show. The last dance Jamiel and Destiny performed was really hot. Might be enough to get him off'ed.
Thank you very much for the title of the song guys... I was looking for it
I am appalled that the all-white judges picked all the non-whites to be voted off. They have systematically gotten rid of everyone that doesn't fit their ballroom/lyrical idea of dance. I usually hate when people blame things on racism but this is ridiculous (I am a 45 year old white woman).
does anyone know the name of the song that jamile and destini did their hip-hop routine to?
it's killing me and i can't find it anywhere!
thanks! :)
The song that Destiny and Jamile danced to is Din Dah Dah (or Din Daa Daa) by George Kranz (I'm pretty sure that's the artist). One of my fav from my breakdancing days. That routine was HOT!
Actually the song Jamile and Destini danced too is Shake by the Ying Yang Twins. Looks like they resampled Din Din Da for the track.
Hi, I'm a French woman, so I'm going to try my best to right in English.
First, I think Ryan wants to go home, at the end when the plastic lady told the phone number, he said don't call for me in gesture.
Second, I also didn't like Destini's attitude. I'm sure producers and choreagraphers don't want people like that in their team.
Third, I think that Blake and Nick danced more different sytles than Arthem. So it's hard to appreciate the talent of Arthem. I would like to see him dance Hip Hop as well as Blake.
Thank you. I hope you understood this comment.
Christina -- your English is fantastic :-) I also noticed that Ryan asked people not to vote for him. I think he was discouraged by the judges' comments, and I think they were too hard on him. I liked his lyrical performance. Gina -- wow, are you serious? I'm shocked -- first because I despise the Ying Yang Twins (mostly b/c they have yet to make a non-derogatory reference to a female in any of their songs), and I LIKED the song Destini and Jamile danced to. But secondly, I don't remember any vocals to the track they danced to and it sounded like the same old Din Daa Daa to me. But I've been wrong before! :-)
Christina, you did fine! I noticed that as well, and I don't know if he was asking them to not vote for at all for him, or him trying to tell the people viewing to wait til the end of the show to vote. He didn't want them to jump the gun perhaps?
thanks for getting back to me, guys! appreciate your help. :)
btw, i think ryan's great, too! i'll be very sad if he's voted off. i'd love to see ryan, nick and arthem as the last three men standing. it would be a nice variety of talented guys.
I guess I'll just jump right in here... I don't agree that the judges are being racist. If we look at what's being required of people in the show, in order to win you need to be really versatile and you need to be able to learn a style and a routine and then do it really well. By "really well" I mean that you should execute not only the steps but the style and you should look appropriate and like you are enjoying yourself. A number of the dancers were incredible at what they do best but were not able to take on other styles (or were really, really unlucky in the styles that they picked).
Personally I hope Destini and Jamile get to stay. Although it was regrettable that Destini was so angry at the end there, she is a much more versatile dancer than Melody (even if Melody is more charming in her way). I am getting a little tired of Melody's hoochy dances with leg up in the air. And I think Jamile is an incredible dancer not only in his own style but he has done great on all those wacky ballroom assignments that are so far outside his comfort zone.
Let's remember that all these people are very good and they are getting national exposure which will help them in their careers. And we get to sit back and enjoy watching them!
I didn't think I was going to post a comment, but I feel compelled to also say a few things about the show. From the very beginning of the series - my favorite dancers have always been : Nick and Blake. But these are definitely the dancers that you "remember" for their technique and versatility. Between Jamile and Ryan - I have to say that I "like" Ryan better - BUT I think Ryan may go because in this stage of the game - "break-dancing" is unfortunately not a "dance" because even though the SHOW states that a dancer MUST be versatile - there is no requirement for ANY dancer to do break-dancing - and thus, the odds are WAY WAAAAY against Ryan because he is in another league with dancers who have danced almost ALL their lives and he has only been break dancing since he was 15!! and only learned dancing a few years after that!! so it is sooo unfair and personally if we had to judge by effort (like Dan Karaty had said in his "interview") then Ryan should win the show for MOST improved and best effort. But unfortunately it is the best dancer among the ones chosen by the show.
And then about Melody and Destini - I think Destini has done very well and she has definitely shown improvement but the improvement that Destini has made has only made her recently be on equal footing with Melody - but Melody from the very start of the show was superb with her lyrical dance (which remember folks is the dance that Destini is supposed to be known for..) and I believe Melody's gorgeous poses and control of her body is a bit prettier than those of Destini's, I'm afraid. (And Melody can totally do hip hop, evidence was of this was in the beginning of training camp when Dan Karaty said he would hire her on the spot if she kept up with her dancing!!)
And let's make it clear, Melody doesn't CHOOSE her partners - it's the LUCK of the draw and Melody has had VERY bad luck - so ask yourself, should a good dancer go home because her partner is not as good as her? Now, is that fair? I don't think so. And remember, it was the judges themselves who complimented Melody and said that she was the most versatile dancer during week 5 (or 6...?) And unfortunately, no comments of that kind have been passed to Destini as of yet or maybe never if she doesn't receive the votes for next week. Anyway, whatever the decision it comes down to - if there is one thing I am waiting for - in the words of Nigel himself - I want to see BLAKE AND NICK DANCE OFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!! :)
Christina, 'the plastic lady'! Too funny. Botoxed lady more like it. :)!!!
Ryan did not seem too excited to continue, he's never really given out those heavy competitive type vibes. But he is real cute.
Ryan DEFINITELY wants to go home and I think Destini will edge out Melody. While Melody is a good dancer, she relies to heavily on the "leg in the air" which is SOOOOO over-rated. If a judge told me just minutes ago to show my versatility other than my "leg in the air", then by god, during my 45 minutes, my leg would NOT be in the air. Not only did she do it, but she did it about three times!!!! Melody absolutely should be the one to go. Along with Ryan. Jamile has performed awesome as well as Destini (even though her rendition of her "leg in the air" that Melody ALWAYS do was a little childish.
What song did Blake and Ashle dance to?
Anonymous, you made some excellent points. The fact is that as competitors are eliminated it gets harder and harder to criticize the people who are left, and it starts to come down to factors like personality, likeability and attitude rather than technique. Meanwhile the judges continue to look for solid technique, week after week.
I could not agree more that luck has a lot to do with it. You could be excellent but pick the worst possible partner week after week (only cruel fate would match Melody with Allan), and/or pick the most inappropriate dance style. In real life a topnotch hip-hopper would just not be asked to do lyrical dancing and nobody but a ballroom dancer would ever do the quick-step. That's why I'm thinking if someone gets eliminated at this stage it's definitely not the end of the road for them careerwise.
Destini vs. Melody is a tough choice, but I don't think either of them is as good as Ashle or Melissa on technique, and I think Kamilah has the technique plus she communicates so much emotionally. Ryan and Jamile are both excellent at what they do (and adorable) but it's definitely going to come down to Blake and Nick in the end; it seems like there is nothing those two can't do. (I say this even though my personal favorite guy is Artem.)
Tani, good point about Melody's leg. The judges specifically told her to show them something else, and she keeps doing it! If she has to do another solo I hope she works up something that looks a lot different from what she has been doing. And I hope Destini is getting some psychological counseling by way of an attitude adjustment.
Come on, people, the fix is in!
What is the probability of Blake not having to perform any >> objective << dance style, and when he does pick samba, it's not really samba. Doesn't >> ballroom << imply you have to dance with a partner -- not just dance beside someone else???? When the judges should have killed his performance, they almost turned my stomach with their contrived praise.
Watch the show for the dancing -- I mean the >> real << dancing, not this interpretive shjt, and forget about the judging.
Can someone please please please upload the video of the hip hop routine from Destni and J! That was freakin amazing!
does anyone know where i can download destini + jamile's hip hop dance video from last week?
I didn't get a response yet, can anyone tell me what Destini's comments were?
It is really driving me crazy.
I don't remember the exact comment but she mentioned something about how she could go from ballroom to popping and locking so she should be the one to stay.
A little late to be adding my two cents, but:
Jamile has proved himself to be more versatile than Ryan. On top of that I get the feeling that Ryan wants out. I think that he feels out of his league at this stage of the competition, and I got the feeling that he felt bad for bringing down Melody's performance. He's a terrific breaker, and he's got personality, but he just doesn't have the technique for this level of competition.
Bad luck for Jamile getting the quick step again, but personally I think it was Destini who brought down the rating of that performance. Having seen the dance a third time through, I noticed that her upper body was noticeably lacking in form. She was too loose where she needed to be more lifted. It's a shame that we never got to see Snow and Artem dance ballroom together.
Having said that, even if their quick step was good, and it never could have matched Artem and Melissa, I think that Jamile and Destini might still have found themselves in the bottom two.
As for predictions about who will make it to the end, for the men I would definitely say Blake and Nick. For the women, I would definitely say Ashle, but I'm not sure which of Kamilah or Melissa I would choose. I think Melissa has better footwork, but Kamilah just oozes sensuality and feeling in her dance. Depending on who gets pared with whom and what dances the partners choose this could all change.
So far I have to say that I agree with the choices of who has been cut and who has stayed on. With the group of dancers that are left we aren't talking about cutting the bad from the good (all of the top 16 are terrific dancers), but cutting the good from the best.
Thus far into the season, So You Think You Can Dance has really impressed me. I never imagined that the contestants would be as good as they are, and that the demands on them would be as high as they are.
Hey can anyone tell me the song that Ashle and Blake danced to during their second performance?
Monica, I don't remember the exact words either but the "plastic lady" asked Destini the usual "How do you feel?" after her solo. She looked a little scared to ask it because Destini had looked so angry and defiant during her solo. Destini sort of muttered that she felt good and then went on to say that she is a very good and extremely versatile dancer and people should vote for her. It felt unsportsmanlike, as the prevailing attitude among the dancers is respectful and affectionate toward their peers and more humble and accepting of what "America" will decide. Frankly I think if Melody stays it will be more because the viewers were put off by Destini's comments and body language than because they think she is a much better dancer than Destini--but I know a lot of people think Melody is a better dancer. Like I said before, all the dancers who remain at this stage are very good.
Jessica, the song is "Right Here Waiting" by Richard Marx.
Tough and getting tougher. Regarding Melody-- One must remember that everyone's solos are prepared in advance so she didn't have time to take out the "leg" move after Mia's comment. I winced when I saw her do it cuz everyone was thinking the same thing. I don't know if we'll see it ever again from her because it's like her "trademark," or if she'll lose it so as to not bug the judges (or America). Out of Destini and Melody, I say keep Melody. A beautiful and versatile dancer. Destini's Hip Hop was awesome but her solo was bland and her Quickstep, brutal.
For the guys, it is truly a toss-up between Jamile and Ryan. Both fantastic and fun to watch, but just not in the same league as Blake and Nick. Artem saved himself for now with a couple fantastic routines but it's coming down to Blake and Nick. Can't wait to see what happens!!!!
Melody is way more of an all around dancer than destiny! she can do it all... even hip hop as you saw earlier in the show. and obviously her lyrical and jazz is amazing. and even one of the judges said she probably has the best technique on the show. And destiny yes is good at hip hop but did u see the last solo she performed?? i dont call that a versatile dancer. i am a dancer of 14 years my self thats y i say this. Also even tho i dont know if "Attitude" has ne thing to do with this show... but destiny has alot of it, and its bad attitude while melody is totally opposite!.
Jessica, thanks for weighing in on this--it is good to hear from a professional dancer. I agree that Melody is versatile; I remember being very surprised at how great her hip-hop routine was. She was lucky in partnering with her friend Craig several times but now that he's gone she has had some bad luck there. And I think attitude matters a lot when it's time for the voting, so we'll see what "America" has to say about Destini's tonight! Melody has been nothing but positive, sweet and humble about her great talent. The one thing that bugs me is the "hoochiness" of her solos. I'm no prude but I just think she has a lot more to offer than shaking her booty. I guess she figures that'll get her the most votes, and she may be right about that.
Wootch, I'm sure everyone thinks Blake and Nick are the best guys, and they are really unbelievable--they make it look easy! But Artem could still surprise us. He has so much talent, has been extremely versatile, and for me he has some sort of undefinable emotional quality which I'm sure has something to do with his life history. I can't wait to see what happens either.
Julane-- No diss on Artem, he is fantastic and I agree about that presence he brings to his performances. I can't remember if it was just this last show or the one before but his "cape" dance was phenomenal. He's kind of the guys' version of Snow with such charisma. If he keeps up with the lucky picks, he's gonna do great but he might be in trouble with some of the other styles.
Regarding Melody's "Hoochy" solos--They work for me... :)
What was the name of the song Melody danced to when put up for elimination against Destiny? Grr I was so mad, I set to record that episode, and it didn't record, and of course they had an awsome performance that week!
Blake draws "lyrical" style again - yeah, right! Did you see him standing there like a fence post in the "disco" routine?
Another "fingers down the throat" feeling from the judges' comments.
Oh man! I missed last night's show. Can somebody tell me who survived the elimination round (Melody or Destini, Ryan or Jamile) and who's been left in the bottom to be eliminated next week? Thanks!
Hey tinydancer13,
Destini and Ryan! got eliminated.
Jamile and Melody are up for elimination (again!), as well as Artum and Melissa.
Who does you people's vote go 4?
BTW - Last night Kamila and Nick were amazing !!!
Destiny & Ryan were on the Regis & Kelly show today! Destiny's routine was awful.. but Ryan looked amazzinngg! I'm still in shock that he got voted off lastnight =(
does anyone know where i can download Bring on the Men by Linda Eder? I can't find it on napster. Thanxs!
Hey ciara,
Try eMule ;)
Goodluck
Artem & Ashlee and Jamile & Melissa (not Melody) are up for elimination.
Melody danced with Blake.
All I've got to say is Jamiel and Melody~bye-bye.
oops! Melissa
Hey does anyone know what the song was that Blake and Melody danced to in their lyrical?
Hi Everyone,
I am new to this but a fan of the show. I am also desperate to download the video of Destini and Jamile last hip hop routine...could someone please email me and let me know where I could find it...
Thanks
We are left with Artem, Ashle, Jamile and Melissa. They all can dance as we see week after week, but its a competition and we are looking for someone who can dance what ever is thrown at them. That said, a dancer is not made overnight, so the dancer we are looking for would have dah many years of practice to become versatile or adaptable, I think at this stage of the game we should remember past performances and eleminate the 2 weakest dancers. This way we get to keep the overall top 2 of the 4. Also at this stage, we know who can dance, it appears that its the dance cheographers that are at fault. For example Artem/Ashle - Foxtrot, they showed that they can get close, and therefore Foxtrot, but the cheography moved them away from the requirements. The judges should give a list of requirements to the dancers and to the cheographers. With this, Artem will be crowned winner! For the girls, its between Kamiliah and Ashle.
Jamille and Destiny's hip-hop song/routine...where o' where can I find it? Know the name anyone? Download the video anyone?
PS I predict Ashlee and Blake to be the winners. SOOOO tired of Melody...she'll be a big success in a toothpaste commercial or soap opera. BUT, she is a great dancer.
Well...as a huge fan of the show, I must open my big mouth and add my two cents.
I like Melody, I think that she is a cutie, she works hard and is really amazing, technically.
I think that Melissa and Artem will go, based on their 45 second SAVE ME! sessions, because they were both really repetitive. Melissa spent too much time walking around the stage, while Ashle did a lot of interesting technical stuff, and gave a way better performance. Jamile wowed me again with that amazing freestyle of his.
I didn't think that Ashle and Artem deserved to be in the bottom two, but then, who did? They were all really great. Their foxtrot was amazing. Yeah, their cha-cha was a little off. According to some. I didn't like Nick and Kamillah's performance this week. Don't get me wrong, I really love them as a couple onstage. I just didn't feel a connection, whereas with Ashle and Artem, there was definitely some chemistry.
I hate Blake's arrogance! I know that he apologized, but that was just his personality for the entire audition section. In the beginning he bragged that he would be the winner, he is a professional dancer, which gives him an unfair advantage, he showed a blatant disregard for the rules and for his roomate's feelings when he brought his dog to the hotel room, and he mouthed off with a disgusting amount of cockiness, to Dan Karaty. Ridiculous. Just ridiculous. The thought that Dan would be jealous of Blake! Laughable. Though Blake may be one of the most talented dancers on the show, I could never bring myself to vote for him.
My thoughts!
i think it was a couple weeks ago but did anybody notice on Destini's "save me" solo that her bra was completely showing in the back?? it was awful- ANY dancer knows that things like that are a major biggie when competing and doing shows- it was especially bad because the light tan realy stuck out against her dark skin... i was amazed that they let her go on like that... and as for all the dissing on Melody- anyone can see that she has the most talent and technique of any girl on the show- but Nigel himself said it wasn't about technique as much as it was about impressing the audience... and her leg impresses the audience!! also, they have their solos made uo BEFORE the show, so that was already choreographed before their comment tat day... and lastly, half of the time she does it, its the choreographers that put in in their dances.. thats not her fault!!! My three favorites are Melody, Nick, and Craig... I cried when Craig got kicked off- i guess its up to Melody and Nick- but AShle's pretty good also- she's growing on me
Anyone know where I can download the videos of them? Like in past performances..Thx!
I don't have the phone number to vote...I've been trying to find it. On T.V. I got 1-888-8367 02, 03, 04. I wanted to vote for those three but I can't get the entire number on any website so I'm out of luck. I think they should post the voting phone number.
Does anyone know the name of the song Ashley and Blake did the Argentine Tango to? Thanks
the number to call is 1-888-TEMPO-nn
I love watching Melody and Nick dance. They're great...
hey guys. to watch the previous performances, check this out. http://groups.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=groups.groupProfile&groupID=100899293&Mytoken=5B064201-01AF-44B6-AC6EE03F03E9E5ED839345437 enjoy!!!
Does anyone know what Jamille's solo song was last week? I can't find it, and it's driving me crazy.
I also would like to know the name/artist of the song that Blake and Ashle tango'd to?? I love it!
Ashley and Blake danced to "Santa Maria" by Gotan Project.
OK... I didn't want to post, but here goes: YES, the judges were all erratic! They couldn't decide whether or not they wanted to make allowances for out-of-specialty performances or not. Even the ballroom judge made WAY to many allowances for the ballroom dances in many cases. Blake SHOULD have been voted off- he was easily one of the best, but his attitude was $#!+. Desini sucked compared to the others who were at that stage. She's very good, but not in their league. Artem should have stayed, although he's not as versatile as Nick. As a professional dance teacher, I was aghast at some of the judgements- and with the exception of his jive, Jamile sucked at ALL of his ballroom dances!!! He saved himself with amazing popping and locking, but he's clearly the least of the four remaining.
Ok, in the final episode, last night, when the final four did their playback dances, what song or dance name did Ashlee and Blake dance to? Does anyone know? Thanks :)
heyy i LOVE this show especially since i am a dancer i was just lookin for the song that jamille and detiny did "din daa daa" i think i dont no where 2 find it. Its not on itunes.

what is the song they play for girls whens they get kicked off when they show them the movie ?
what was the song that nick and jamile danced at the finals?
What is the song name of the solo's the dancers did? (The peace thing; where they screamed).
what was the song title that laci and neil danced to, coriographed by Miah Micheals
will there be another tv series of So you think you could dance in the next year or so?

This is getting really hard for the judges now. Even though they are picking couples for elimination, you can tell that they are just targeting individuals. What else can they do? Ryan was very weak and overall, just isn't as versatile as the other dancers. Jamile should stay.
But Melody vs. Destini? I don't know. They are both very good and very different. I believe, if America votes based on what they saw in the solo routines, they'll vote for Melody.
Next week will be a killer -- how are they going to choose?
