Author, Examine Thyself: A Letter to Bernard Goldberg

Dear Bernard Goldberg:

Maybe you didn't like my earlier posts, from my thoughts on your asinine list to my attempt to start a new meme or just linking to your meltdown on air.

But that's ok.

I'm writing about your list—that is, your book. And, yes, I read it. First, I'd like to suggest that you put yourself on the list of people screwing up America, because your behavior and attitudes are exactly the kind of divisive work this nation does not need.

But judging by how you've behaved to critics of your book in the past—such as was described here—I'm guessing that won't happen.

So I'd like you to consider a new nominee: Robert Novak.

Before last month I would have mentioned you two in the same breath, as hothead Republicans whose mouths move faster than their brains, and who may be missing hearts and souls.

But today when Novak walked off-air—hopefully forever—he did so after saying a bad word.

In your book you make a point of mentioning how harmful it is to have Chevy Chase (yes, he is still alive) use the F-word while speaking at the Kennedy Center. I've wondered aloud why that's bad, but Dick Cheney cursing is not worthy of your criticism, and was told that some thought the situations different, in that Cheney's conversation was private.

Well, it's hard to get much more public than cursing on air, as Novak did.

So I'm thinking you need to stop the presses and add Robert Novak—or at least give Novak an honorable mention.

Thinking of you,

Scott/Scoop

I'm not sure if saying, "This is B---S---" equates with Chevy Chase calling the President a "dumb f---."

You're right, Chevy Chase's comments should be taken less seriously since he is, after all, a comedian. And his comments was to an audience expecting him to be either make dumb comments or funny comments.
Whereas Novak was live on air and more performance artist/has-been journalist and not known for cussing.

Complaining about a comedian cussing is like complaining that an airport or a rock concert is loud.

And I thought it was a good comeback on my part!

My delivery must be worse than Chase's?

Meanwhile did you hear about Cheney getting cussed out while in New Orleans?
Not only was THAT not ok but the guy got cuffed:

Bernie uses the word hypocrite quite a few times... and also attacks people for using obsene language in their arguments... and calls Courtney Love a "Ho" with no other comments. I'd say that classifies him as a hypocrite, no? Has he ever heard the old adage that an insult is not but a refuge for a weak argument??

His attacks on Jimmy Carter and Noam Chomsky, among others, were weak and shortsighted, he seems to ignore alot of evidence that doesn't work in his favour. He also attacks ALOT of very well-educated and respected individuals for any kind of anti-american foreign policy, white house, or cultural policies, values and ethics, which at times (particularly such turbulent times) need to be criticized; is this not at the heart of the democratic system? He appears so blindly "pro-war," "pro-Bush" that common sense and a respect for democracy have completely escaped him.

A broad, sweeping attack on some of the worlds most respected institutions of higher education, and those that run and manage them... is this not an ultimate representation of the cocky, smug, self-righteous, over-zealous and plain-old ignorant attitude that he accused the "liberals" in america of possessing?? I'd argue that he has done so to an even greater extreme. He is a dangerous individual... because people take him seriously. average minds discuss people... great minds discuss ideas... and the politics of the United States are in desperate need of some good ideas right now. The last thing they need is to be blindly supported by a rich, conservative, Christian-fundamentalist who unfortunately has a venue and an audience ready to listen to his dangerous and blind blabber.

1) Frank McCourt. I'll give'm me pot o' gold if he promises never to appear on television again.
2) The redheaded judge on American Inventor who cries with empathy every time someone shows her their idea for a new shovel.
3) People who are always on the attack with no decorum or decency till they fuck up in front of god and everyone then say 'Whoa, whoa. Can't we be civilized here?'
4) We shouldn't forget Van Halen fans.
rephrased: Thanks for David Lee Roth. Jerks.
5) Rush Limbaugh. He's been kinda quiet since the arrest, but he's a life time member of On the List for encouraging more people to express more opinions they really should have grown out of long ago, privately, than anyone or thing including Hunter S Thompson or the Internet.
6) Oh yeah. Bloggers.
7) Any jerk off who calls you a hypocrite because they can't recognize sarcasm.
8) The guy at work who's on the phone with his wife or their friends all day but still thinks he's the only who does any work around here.
9) People who complain about foul language. If you three year old's standing right there, you get an exemption. Otherwise shut the fuck up.
10) Anyone whose list ran out of gas, completely, at '8' but still had to take it '10' because that's the prescribed number
