Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist died Saturday evening at his home in suburban Virginia, said Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg.
A statement from the spokeswoman said he was surrounded by his three children when he died in Arlington.
RIP, Mr. Chief Justice.
Well, now Bush has two more picks to make to the USSC: Someone to replace Rehnquist as the CJ, and someone else to fill the vacancy his death has created on the USSC. (Unless, of course, Bush taps the same person to fill both roles, which I find unlikely.)
We're in for a media-heavy September, folks. Especially if/when another hurricane forms and heads towards the US... :-/

The position of Chief Justice has traditionally gone to the new justice who replaced him. This practice has only twice been violated, the last time being Rehnquist. I see no need for an extra fight in the Senate, and hope that Bush would appoint the new justice CJ. The only political benefit to appointing a CJ from the current members of the Court would be as a placation: a CJ Scalia in exchange for a moderate AJ like Gonzales, or a liberal CJ providing cover to slip in a very conservative AJ. But who would be the liberal CJ? Breyer? Ginsburg?
