Single Review: Kelly Clarkson's 'Because of You'

Written by Pam Avoledo
Published August 19, 2005

Album: Breakaway
Year: 30 November 2005
Label: RCA

A cold parent has hardened Kelly Clarkson in the steely ballad "Because of You."

She "oohs" over a somber piano, creating a wintry tone. She promises herself to do make different decisions than he did. She won't be like him: miserable and impulsive. He drew her in with his vibrant facade. However, it's only caused her to become disillusioned. She will be cautious the next time around. "I will not make the same mistakes that you did/I will not let myself/Cause my heart so much misery/I will not break the way you did/You fell so hard/I've learned the hard way/To never let it get that far."

In the chorus, she mentions that she won't discover new places or try anything new. She doesn't believe anyone is sincere. They have selfish motives. It's ingrained in her by one of her parents. "Because of you/I never stray too far from the sidewalk/Because of you/I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt/Because of you/I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me/Because of you/I am afraid."

Clarkson details the emotionless person who raised her. If she was unsure of what to do and felt lost, she would be scolded for it. If she cried in front of the person, she would be berated for showing emotion. She learned crying means a lack of strength and control. In order to appease the person, she began to pretend to be outgoing. However, inside she's hurt and resentful that she can't be talk about how she feels. Growing up with the person has made her numb and angry "I lose my way/And it's not too long before you point it out/I cannot cry/Because you know that's weakness in your eyes/I'm forced to fake/A smile, a laugh everyday of my life/My heart can't possibly break/When it wasn't even whole to start with."

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU. This is an EXCELLENT review of my favorite Kelly Clarkson song, and furthermore one of my favorite songs ever. If you don't mind, I'd like to link to this post in my blog. Very well done.

#2 — August 19, 2005 @ 14:01PM — Pam Avoledo [URL]

Thanks! I really do the like the songwriting the single.

Although I didn't mention it in my review, I love the bridge and how Clarkson sings other lyrics in the background.

#3 — August 19, 2005 @ 15:07PM — Chris Evans [URL]

Yes, the bridge is GREAT. Especially that note she hits at the end. "For the same damn thiiiiiiiing"

#4 — August 19, 2005 @ 15:26PM — Jackson

Pam, Very powerful review. You captured the beauty and reality of the song quite nicely. I agree that this single is simply amazing. I appreciate how delicate and intimate it is, while still being very powerful and dynamic. This is seen especially during the bridge. The lyrics are so charged and full of languish, while the music and intonation is so pensive yet electric and rich.

#5 — August 19, 2005 @ 15:44PM — Ben

Nice review! Actually I have listened to the single a zillion times and your review gave me an even deeper appreciation for it.

#6 — August 19, 2005 @ 18:21PM — Jeremy Evans

Wow, it's really great to see an accurate interpretation of Kelly's first really true, edgy ballad. What a song, what an artist, and I cannot wait to see her again in concert.

#7 — August 19, 2005 @ 19:31PM — Jim S [URL]

you make it sound like she was singing from the heart about a true experience in her life and about the "emotionless person who raised her."

just one little quibble, though.
she didn't write it.

#8 — August 19, 2005 @ 19:33PM — Jim S [URL]

don't know why the link didn't come out right...

here

#9 — August 19, 2005 @ 19:54PM — jay

^Actually, she DID write the song. The information in that link is incorrect. That website has made numerous previous mistakes about songwriters/artists. Most have been corrected. This one has not - yet.

#10 — August 19, 2005 @ 19:59PM — jay

^^^ Jim S., you happened to look up the info for the song "Breakaway," which was co-written by Avril Lavigne - which doesn't even show Avril's name there (mistake). If you search for "Because of You" - the title song referenced for this blog - you'll find that Kelly certainly did write the song (co-wrote).

#11 — August 19, 2005 @ 20:03PM — jay

i was happy to read the following excerpt from an interview w/ Ben Moody (co-wrote Because of You w/ Kelly). It just proved that she didn't simply add a "few words" to the song in order to make it her own:

Former Evanesence member Ben Moody has said that working with Kelly Clarkson is one of the most fun experiences he's had in music. Speaking about his time in the studio with the original 'Idol' he says: Her album is very much what she wanted to say, and it's funny going through the process with her and knowing what these songs are about and watching her mature into what she is now - an artist in oppose to an 'American Idol' winner, added Moody, who has also worked with Avril Lavigne. "That was probably the most fun I've had on a session. She was so much fun and very laid-back, but very sincere.

Ben also couldn't believe how good some of the songs that Kelly brought to the table were. "They were just unbelievable, how structured they were and her understanding of music, which is not something you would expect from a pop artist," said Ben, who co-wrote and produced the songs after Clarkson sent him the tape. "She had these ideas already in place for songs; all I really had to do was build music around them and develop them. It was quite easy."

#12 — August 19, 2005 @ 20:28PM — Chris Evans [URL]

Actually Kelly DID write the song. She wrote it years ago long before she was even famous. If you were well read, you would have fucking read the article where Kelly explained the process behind the song. When she came to Ben Moody and David Hodges she brought them a recording of her singing the song when she was a fucking KID. Thanks and have a great day, sweetheart.

#13 — August 19, 2005 @ 20:50PM — Bob

Actually, she did write it. Its about her parent's divorce.

#14 — August 20, 2005 @ 22:25PM — Sean

Great review! I hope this song takes off on the radio! it already broke the Mediabase Pop Top 40!

#15 — August 23, 2005 @ 16:03PM — Temple Stark [URL]

Why haven't the 13 year old spelling bee champions looking for Kelly's AIM SN invaded this topic yet when there are so man on the other one?

It's truly a mystery.

That is all.

#17 — August 23, 2005 @ 21:42PM — jay

^nice job, Bob... slamming the "spelling bee" champs when you can't even spell yourself ("when there are so - man (???) - on the other one?). Do you mean "many?"

It's truly a mystery.

That is all... ;)

#18 — August 23, 2005 @ 22:10PM — Bob A. Booey [URL]

I always spell correctly. I was in fact a 2-time defending spelling bee champ in junior high. I just left out the "y" when typing, which is a typo. Surely, no one would confuse the spelling of the two words.

That is all.

#19 — August 25, 2005 @ 17:24PM — Sarah

bar Annie Lennox -Why, this is the only song that can make me cry! the lyric in it are so true and heart-felt, it jst moves me so much. and when you hear this song live it is jst spine tinglin!! cnt wait till she is performin it live on tv programmes for promotion! woho!
xSx

#20 — August 25, 2005 @ 21:52PM — Reed

Midway through the song it begins to sink in this is real emotion brought up from a real experience that jades ever emotion the singer feels about anything. Its a moving song. There aren't many like it.

#21 — August 29, 2005 @ 17:19PM — Kyle

"Because of You" is Kelly's first personal ballad as to "A Moment" and "Before Love". Although I enjoy every song that she sings, I have to say that "Because of You" is definitely on my top 3 list. My list being: "Just Missed the Train", "Because of You", and "Addicted". Both "Because" and "Addicted" were co-written and produced by Ben Moody and David Hodges. I believe they are two of the most important songs to Kelly on her sophomore album, "Breakaway".
I think I enjoy the two Moody/Clarkson pieces because I can relate to both of them easily for their true meaning. And if you really think about it, every single person alive can relate to their lyrics. She has a tremendous voice (vocal range), and I can't wait until her third album comes out.
Allegedly, one of her 3rd album singles is going to be titled "Come Here".

#22 — August 31, 2005 @ 11:45AM — Amber Johnson

Does anyone know when her next album is coming out? I love pretty much every song on both her albums, but I would love to have something new to listen to. Because of You is one of my favorite songs she sings. She is so talented. I love that people are really relating to her music, and seeing how truly talented and real she is.

#23 — August 31, 2005 @ 21:13PM — Amanda

I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!! I don't care who wrote it but Kelly is the best one to sing it this song deserves to get credit not cridic so you all need to just get on with ur old lives and stop bugging Kelly because she has and amazing voice and u don't GET OVER IT SHE CAN SING BETTER THAN YOU SO WHAT if she couldn't than we wouldn't have the radio or cd's now would we Kelly I love this song and i think u should be very proud of it. ~*Amanda*~

#24 — September 3, 2005 @ 19:23PM — Mandy

I love this song, Gone and You Found Me.
I don't care who wrote the damn song, it sounds good- and that's all there is to it.
Kelly won AI so all you critics shut up.

#25 — September 5, 2005 @ 23:36PM — Brandi

My father has never hidden how hard a life he's had. He wanted me to see how hard a life is w/out ambition. He had none when he was younger. He has always pushed me to be educated and headstrong. Whenever he saw me getting off course from reaching my career goals he would pull me to the side and say,"look at what ur doing" This song really reminds me of how my father pushed me to be the personI am today. I am starting a great career, know whta I want, and know that when I am unsure I can ask him for an outsiders view of if I am doing something stupid.

#26 — September 6, 2005 @ 02:41AM — mark

#27 — September 6, 2005 @ 02:47AM — Bob A. Booey [URL]

#28 — September 6, 2005 @ 15:15PM — mark

i luv kelly clarkson!!!

#29 — September 6, 2005 @ 20:25PM — Davey

I think this song rocks, well it seems like every word has been edited and it realy gives out the meaning how hurtful Kel's life was, where there is a father who who was very hard on her and seems like he devorced with her mum in the part

I watched you die/I heard you cry every night in your sleep/I was so young/You should have known better than to lean on me/You never thought of anyone else/You just saw your pain/And now I cry in the middle of the night/For the same damn thing."

It seems when kel's mom left was so hurt, Kel's was so young that she didn't know what to do that she stayed woth mum and dad was cried in the middle of the night for the same damn thing her dad was crying of.

Kelly you rock and you really bring out a true meaning of a song.!
Luv ya all!
Bye!

#30 — September 6, 2005 @ 20:58PM — Tevita Talanoa

Well Kelly was likely raised up with her father as her mother left and she lost luv from her life as her father did not treat her the right way if a a mother would, well no one blames the mum for leaving, due to her heart break on Kel's father, well mother did come back but when she was away the father cried for what he did and never noticing that kelly was also heart broken and dad didn't care for her pain only his, well they both cried for the same thing at the nite times.
As with the part
/I heard you cry every night in your sleep/..........
You never thought of anyone else/You just saw your pain/And now I cry in the middle of the night/For the same damn thing."

it seems like it was dad's fault that this heart broken happened but he didn't cared for kelly being heart broken.

It seems like Kelly's father coulden bare to see her being in any emotion when her mother left for dad just blamed it on mom on the part. and has told that they won't even think of her or anything else.

/I cannot cry/Because you know that's weakness in your eyes/

/I'm forced to fake/A smile, a laugh everyday of my life/

She lives a dreadful life with her dad that she pretends that she is happy but then she just fakes what is being with her.

/My heart can't possibly break/When it wasn't even whole to start with."

She metions here that after her heart broke and anything between that will happen will not break her heart for it was broken before.

She finishes the song with a really emotional way, well Kelly did really wirte this song for these things happened in her earlyhood life, well your a great singer, a great star, I luv u Kelly!

#31 — September 7, 2005 @ 19:10PM — Tevita Talanoa

#35 — September 10, 2005 @ 12:34PM — cj

Kelly's dad was depressed, and Kelly still despises him for it. Please don't think me callous, because I grew up in similar circumstance(abuse, depression etc), but there is much to be said for the way we handle our past. There comes a time in an adult life when we are accountable for our own actions, and decide to be angry, or hurt, or callous for the rest of our lives, but we cannot eternally blame our parents for this. We can also decide to FORGIVE! Forgiveness (true forgiveness) is such a cathartic, and promotes healing! If the Kellys of the world truly want to heal, they need to seek help, rather than collect oodles of money for broadcasting their anger and blame to the world (such as the "emo" music), thus perpetuating their own anger, and the anger of everyone who listens to it. "I'm forced to fake/A smile, a laugh everyday of my life/" is only a cover-up, not a cure.

#36 — September 11, 2005 @ 12:21PM — Chris

True but if you dont express your anger it will eat you from the inside out and inorder to HEAL you must begin the process thats what she is doing.

#37 — September 11, 2005 @ 16:23PM — COURTNEY [URL]

i think that Kelly Clarkson is an awsome girl and her voice is amazing i think her n Pete Wentz should hoock up that would be soo cool!!

In my english speech I have to consider representations of experience and subsequent reflection. I have to explore the process by which our experiences of events, personalities or situations are altered or influenced by reflection, and how this is represented in a variety of texts. Kelly's "Because of You" is perfect for my speech because it has experience and reflection written all over the song. I'll let you guys know how well I did in my speech. It's tomorrow morning haha.

#51 — September 15, 2005 @ 11:12AM — Bob A. Booey [URL]

#58 — September 28, 2005 @ 00:36AM — Keeda

But... Which of her parents is it that she's singing about. That's what's confusing me. Some of the lyrics refer to what could be her dad and others to what could be her mom. Is it supposed to be that deseptive? Or am I just looking over some major elements?

#59 — September 28, 2005 @ 20:14PM — David

Go Kelly you rock!
Well it refers to her Dad, and to you ashley, your the slowest freak to know her, I would say she has talent and there's nothing about kelly that we can fault her for, she is amazing and she can sing, and yes her songs are analyzed, not like some fake artists who can't even analyze and put up a song to sound up in the right way, like some can say with Kel's Since u been gone, it's such great work being put together in such a small package, well Kelly you rock and Ashley your the type that can't even think, the type that dosent have any talent of any type just a boring freak you are, ugly faced and skinny bone,I would say, Kelly rocks!

Luv ya Kelly

#60 — October 1, 2005 @ 05:20AM — Nicole

Kelly is an incredible vocalist and her latest single "Because of You" is a true testament to her abilities as a songwriter and musician. The song is emotionally powerful and y'all did a great job of describing her thoughts/feelings in writing this (which for the record -- she did do at the age of 16).

Just a clarification though...when Kelly's parents divorced, her dad left and moved to cali and kelly stayed in texas with her mom. Therefore, this song is not about how her dad raised her, but growing up having your parents divorce and having to be strong for her mom.

At any rate...the single is already flying up the pop airplay charts and is at #2 so it's definitely going to be a major hit. The video, which will no doubt be INCREDIBLE, premeires on Monday on TRL and Kelly herself wrote the treatment so i can't wait to see it!

Big kuddos to Kell and best wishes for her continued success!

#61 — October 1, 2005 @ 20:25PM — Jess

Well, i liked the song... but wat i don't like about it is that Ben Moody and David Hodges co-wrote it, bcuz i'm a hardcore Evanescence fan...

Also, about American Idol, did you c wat happened to Constantine Maroulis? he wasn't the worst! it's all america's fault! that means kelly mite not have been the best person in the world to sing!

Lastly, i wanna c how the music vid looks like when it comes out in 2 days! count them!

#62 — October 2, 2005 @ 19:57PM — Sam

omfg Kelly rox my sox off!!! i know why i'm looking at this site cuz i'm not an effin dumbass. Listen closly to her songs they're all GREAT. I LOVE YOU KELLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CAN'T WAIT 2 SEE THE MUSIC VID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

oH MY GOSH! this video is so amazing! this song is excellent!!! An for those of you who say she didn't write the song, correction, she wrote it when she was 16!!! That's pretty impressive. ANs SHE wrote it!!! No one helped her. KELLY ROCKS MY SOCKS OFF!!!!

#66 — October 4, 2005 @ 18:25PM — Lauren

Dude, that video makes me cry so hard. It's really ridiculous how she's not even acting...she even WROTE the treatment for the video. Amazing. AND it's already number one on the first day on TRL. No doubt that most of freaking AMERICA is going to relate in some way.

I love this. She is so insanely talented.

I totally agree with everything you said. This is her greatest song ever, both lyrically and vocally.

It is the first song that has ever made me cry, like every line in the song have some sort of meaning to me, and your analysis up there really shocked me cause that's exactly like my life...lol

But yeah, good to see such a talented artist somewhere in the pool of "talent" there is today.

The song itself made me cry, but then when i saw the video, i cried so hard again. I know like alot of us, we can SO relate to this song. The lyrics to the song are exceptional, so poetic, in every line. this song could not have turned out any better. and omg, i cannot put into words how GREAT the music video is. KELLY ROX MY SOX OFF.AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

#76 — October 6, 2005 @ 02:54AM — Laura

I came to this blog to find out if she personally wrote this song or not and what it means to her and I am now completely depressed at how ignorant 99% of you are. Why are you addressing your comments as if Kelly will actually be reading them? Like she doesn't have anything better to be doing than reading what you ignorant losers think about her and her songs!! You can't type. You can't spell. You can't put a sentence together. You have no understanding of the English language. You have nothing intelligent to say. You are talking about egg farts, etc. Bob A. Booey (how creative, NOT!)is some idiot acting like he is smarter than everyone on this site. Give me a break!! I hope this blog and the comments on it are in no way representative of our society's intelligence as a whole, because if it is we might as well just push the big red button and end it all right now. For those of you who are too ignorant to know what the big red button is, it is to set off nuclear bombs and start World War III. No need to comment back to me about this post telling me how stupid, wrong or whatever you think I am, as I will never be so stupid to ever read something so inane again!! Inane--Look it up genius!

#77 — October 6, 2005 @ 18:05PM — Allie

I don't get it what did her dad do??

#78 — October 6, 2005 @ 22:15PM — Sam

In the video didn't her dad leave? i dunno about the real story behind it, (i'm such a great fan) but w/e. Smart asses like Laura bring down the whole morale of sites like this. We're all her to say something about kelly.Who gives a rats tushy about how we do it? KELLY ROX MY SOX OFF!!!!!!!!!!!

#79 — October 7, 2005 @ 11:31AM — lisa

Hi, Im a mom and my daughter was singing this song yesterday and was in love with it. Then I got to listening and realized it was probably about a parent. We are going through some rough times and this song is kind of a wake up call to me to not let my emotions ruin her life.

#80 — October 8, 2005 @ 02:33AM — Janine

I went through the same thing with my mother. Every word of this song speaks to me. I'm glad Kelly wrote it and shared her feelings. If she had forgiven and not hurt like the rest of us, we would never know that there others. That we aren't alone. It's easy to feel alone when even your parents don't give you the kind of love they should. I didn't realise until much later on in life how my mother's behaviour has affected me. But the hurt is alive and well and surfaces in my relationships and career. I can't trust fully even still. I do my best. But I have been scarred for life and no amount of feined forgiveness is going to fix that.

#81 — October 8, 2005 @ 21:03PM — Katie Steffen

Kelly i love you soooooo fucken much!!!! I love your songs and i love you soooooo much!!! lol

#82 — October 11, 2005 @ 06:01AM — Stepahnie

I agree with you, Janine! I find it pathetic that I relate to a pop-song, but this is the only song that has ever addressed these issues specifically... how her mother leaned on her, for instance. Everyone wants to make money-- at least Kelly Clarkson doesn't get on TV and tell people God sent her and showed her 500 foot tall Jesus. The Beatles made BILLIONS of dollars, but I don't think that trivializes their lyrics.

#83 — October 11, 2005 @ 06:02AM — STEPHANIE

Shit. I can't even spell my own name!! LOL It was a typo, sheesh. :P

#84 — October 11, 2005 @ 14:07PM — shannon

my ex girlfriend dedicated this song to me what is she trying to say

#85 — October 11, 2005 @ 14:11PM — rebecca

#86 — October 11, 2005 @ 16:55PM — Steelpanther

I love this song so much! Firsst time I heard it I couldn't get it out of my head. It was like calling for me! lol It's really sad but so real.

#87 — October 11, 2005 @ 20:00PM — Viqi French [URL]

Wow! I've always thought Kelly the real deal, but after reading the feedback here, it seems "official".

Will definitely check out her new one. Great piece about a very worthy "Idol."

#88 — October 16, 2005 @ 22:21PM — Bee

hmm, during the bridge, my friend just pointed out that she is singing something else in the background, but i can hardly make out what it is even after listening to it over 20 times. does someone know the lyrics to that part??

#89 — October 18, 2005 @ 21:49PM — Sam

Hey Bee, i also too noticed this. It makes the bridge sound so incredibly better. For sure, i know when it starts, she says "I watched you die ... In your sleep...". As for the rest, i cannot make it out. I think it goes something like "i lost you ... in everything/you never think ... on me...". i can't say for sure what that says. I've analyzed it about a million times, so someone else PLEASE relieve me the pain of not knowing what she says in the backround. KELLY ROX MY SOX OFF!!!

i believe you are a true singer and song writer and actress, the song because of you made me cry, very emotional and powerful!

#93 — October 22, 2005 @ 21:14PM — brandon

it totaly rox kelly your video hits and songs rock

#94 — October 24, 2005 @ 10:59AM — Sarah

I think that the description of the song is good...however I think that it is obvious that it is about the effects of divorce on her dad and mom. I think the one who raised her is her mom and she is also singing about how it changed her mom...and her mom was depending on her to help her through it and being selfish....because of her dad she is afraid..as in the chorus..

#95 — October 24, 2005 @ 12:15PM — Rene

Does anyone know when Addicted will be released?

#96 — October 27, 2005 @ 22:13PM — Sam

Right, cuz she says "i was so young, you should have known better than to lean on me". I, as many other people, know this first hand. Not that my parents are going thru a divorce, but I am like the second Dad. My mother talks to me as if i was the father, and not the son.

#97 — October 29, 2005 @ 08:52AM — emma

i love kelly clarkson shes amazing and i cant wit til february when she is in the UK. Becuase of you is my favourite song of her wickedalbum . was over the moon when i heard that she was releasing it. and she wrote the song when she was 16. talented or what!!

#98 — October 31, 2005 @ 21:34PM — stacey

I have never heard any thing that expressed my feelings so perfectly about my own childhood. Every word in "Because Of You" describes the way I feel today, and the pain I went through with my parents. To hold in this pain for so many years and never tell anybody (I don't have the capacity to trust enough to tell), and then hear this song. I never have cried as much as I did then. Maybe this will help me seek help for all of the hurt I am going through. It is as if she is telling the world my story.

#99 — November 2, 2005 @ 12:48PM — fleur

It's a well done song but it's very whiney. It grates on my nerves with its blaming and self pity. There is no resolution, just whining. I had a similar childhood so you can't say I don't understand. It's just like, ok, let's move on now.

#100 — November 2, 2005 @ 19:35PM — natalie

i think this song is fantastic, i saw the video the other day and literally stopped dead, one of my housemates was like 'uh, i don't get it..' but it got me right to my core, obviously because of my personal experiences.

some people won't understand this song because they have had perfect childhoods (its like 'i'm ok' by christina aguilera - unless your dad was violent you may find it self-indulgent crap). what i find so sad is how many people on here are saying the same thing..that they suffered at the hands of self-destructive, selfish, depressed parents who made their children act like the parents. i know some people have said 'ok, shit happens lets just get on with it and stop blaming our parents' but if you are subject to systematic emotional trauma your whole childhood you dont even realise its wrong until you escape it, and then you cannot help but be angry. you NEED your parents to acknowledge that they created you and then basically destroyed you before you had a chance to find out who you were.

but one thing i know is that people who do have fucked up childhoods turn out the strongest people of all, and thats the message kelly's making - its not 'pity me' its 'i'm not gonna end up like you (dad)'. look at the depth of the lyrics, like christina's stripped album. although they suffered painful childhoods they create some seriously moving songs, not many songs make me cry. these kind of songs are like therapy for abused children who are now adults, still frightened and confused by what the hell they did to deserve the insecurity inside.

i just find it so sad that so many parents are just incapable of being parents. but to anyone who's experienced similar, i bet you're tough as hell and won't take any crap, and you'll be better people on the inside too. maybe lets just try and not screw up our own kids....

as for kelly, she's an inspiration. :-)

#101 — November 4, 2005 @ 01:24AM — azel

how great is kelly, i really like her

#102 — November 7, 2005 @ 18:01PM — Tevita

Hey there Kel, You rock and this song rocks, well just to you all take it easy and relax, get off the pressure, I know some of you out there still face the pressure, well pressurized parents are due to the fact that they have seen someone, well keep it groovey!

#103 — November 8, 2005 @ 02:45AM — lilly

this would have to be one of my favourite songs it has so much meaning and its just AWSOME!!!!

#104 — November 9, 2005 @ 23:56PM — jess

I can totally relate to this song, in the exact same way she can relate to it. Very sad song and sad she had to go through this...it is hard. I love Kelly Clarkson she is awesome

#105 — November 10, 2005 @ 17:24PM — skd

I think that Kelly Clarkson has one of the best voices i've ever heard. I was looking up the lyrics for this song while watching her video on MTV 2, and it really came accross on how powerful and what a long way she has come. She is incredible. I sand Kelly Clarkson's Because of You for a school concert and got a standing ovation.

#106 — November 11, 2005 @ 17:03PM — SHANNYN

I LOVE Kelly. The ONLY worthy idol I've seen in the world. WORLD! I went to her concert two nighs ago, and I must say, she blew me away. I was even impressed with her curvy figure, not succumbing to Hollywood pressure to be thin. Well, she's my idol, possibly even my new God. Who wants to join my new religion?!

#107 — November 16, 2005 @ 16:27PM — Danny

to SAM and BEE~

The lyrics to that beautiful background in the bridge are:

i watched you die
in your sleep
i was too young for you
to lean on me
you never thought of me

I found it on a message board, it was driving me crazy too haha.

#108 — November 17, 2005 @ 22:56PM — Leigha

I was in the car the first time I heard this one. I had to pull over, it hit me so hard. The emotion, the lyrics, she must have pulled them straight from my own sad childhood heart. I have never been able to put into words my own experience, but this song has & she sings it perfectly.

I want to tell you that I was singing your song today and I liked it was called because of you I wish that I can see you in real life!

#112 — November 23, 2005 @ 00:22AM — brie

omg! i thought the music video was really powerful! it showed a different kelly... a stronger one. it's hard to believe she actually went through this (and if she didn't its hard to believe someone actually does!) i hated my life before i heard this song... it changed me! im way more self-confident, i talk a lot (sometimes too much!), im popular, i have great friends and it's mostly because of this song!! i wish people would write more about this kind of stuff than love and all that! so yeah thank you so much! i think kelly's really talented and this song is so true! it actually made me cry when i saw the music video... like the dad leaving and the little girl! omg!! i cried really hard... but please everyone recognize this song!

#113 — November 24, 2005 @ 16:01PM — francesca

totally agree with this review- i'm listening to the song right now. i had already realised that the song wasn't a tribute by any means. the video is as powerful as the song. 12/10 for kelly, definitely a step up from her miss independent days!!

Awesome voice and this song really is something special. Kelly, you have grown as an artist over the past year and is really shows. You are a fine example of what an "american idol" should be - you never let us down.

what a beautiful songs kelly had!!!!!!!!!!!!

#124 — December 2, 2005 @ 10:15AM — hey

i guess kellys songs are ok, but im not giving her any credit for anything as she did not write them and she has very little musical talant.
Her voice is not very good and when she sings she doesnt sound like she means it in her songs. I also think she puts too much into her preformance, and its like shes trying (and failing)
to be all rock n roll in her vidios, it really pisses me off.

does ne 1 know the meaning behinde addicted? i love the song it sends shivers everytime i hearit! exscuse the spelling sos

#131 — December 19, 2005 @ 11:11AM — looking4_deepermeanin

Yeah ok basically im not gonna droan on like other ppl did (sry;) im gonna say wat im saying but make it short and sweet. I agree with everyone about how its written about her parents divorce and she was kinda talking bout her dad in the beginning but then she moves on to say how her mom was not noticing how Kelly felt she was preoccupied with her problems. like it says / u never thought of anyone else you just saw your pain/

so really shes blaming both her parents

#132 — December 20, 2005 @ 08:45AM — Z

Before I watched the video and read this review I just enjoyed it as a catchy angsty pop song. But now I've seen it and understand that it's not about some guy but about parents- the tears were streaming down my face as I felt the song hit me on an amotional level.

#133 — January 9, 2006 @ 17:34PM — maria

this song is truly great and kelly inspires me. i am a great singer and got in my talent show by singing but this year i want to make the talent show again but instead of country girl shania twain i am going for kelly clarkson and hopefully this time i get 1st of 15 thats if i get thank you kelly and you don't know but i am 12 and my new dream is to meet and sing with you

#134 — March 2, 2006 @ 17:41PM — Nicole

yo i love the song because of you. I love kelly clarkson!!! you rock!

#135 — April 2, 2006 @ 14:08PM — Pixiegem

I think you are all wrong (but maybe I am)
I think 'you' in 'because of you' is refering to her mother not her father. she is upset at the way her mother reacted to her father leaving, that she couldnt cope and fell into depression. I agree that she is upset because her mother didnt aknoweldge that she was hurting too. But mostly I think the song is about how kelly is careful not to get hurt so she doesnt end up the same way, and she is scared of not being able to cope like her mother.

'I will not make the same mistakes that you did
I will not let myself cause my heart so much misery
I will not break the way you did
You fell so hard
I've learned the hard way, to never let it get that far'

#136 — June 16, 2006 @ 13:30PM — MJ

Kelly Clarkson has an amazing voice. I am a huge fan of all her work. She has a voice that you feel as you listen to her music. Breakaway is a spectacular album. She is proving that she is a voice that will be heard for years to come.

wow this is supposed to be about her song and ppl on here are fighting about spelling errors .. i really enjoyed reading the review of such a heart filled song!!

#143 — January 25, 2008 @ 19:41PM — Stephanie

This is ironic. Because just about every line that was interpreted of Kelly's life described in this song, is and was exactly like my life. I went through the same things, and felt the same exact way. I can relate to this song so much, it's almost a song of my life..
