"Over 10,000,000 Served" - Blogcritics Breaks Barrier

Written by Eric Olsen
Published August 04, 2005

About a week before our third anniversary (August 12), Blogcritics.org — our little "sinister cabal of superior bloggers on music, books, film, popular culture, technology, and politics" — has hit the 10 million unique visitors mark. This is a nice big fat round number that speaks volumes toward the talents and dedication of our writers, editors, commenters, and most of all, the 10 million readers who have spent some of their valuable time with us since August of 2002.

At the end of our first year we had 1.5 million page views, 13,817 comments, 7162 entries, and 311 Blogcritics writers. In our second year we had 4 million page views (2-year total of 5.5 million), 61,177 comments (total of 74,994), 10,140 entries (total of 17,302), and 522 writers. Nice growth.

But in our third year we will have had about 8.3 million page views for a 3-year total of about 13.8 million, about 115,000 comments for a total of over 190,000, about 14,000 entries for a total of over 31,000, and 1100 writers. Wow.

Awards and recognition (please see the lower right sidebar) are great and we appreciate them, but Blogcritics is something we love to do and it is gratifying beyond words that a growing number of you find our efforts worth your time and attention.

The future is so bright we gotta wear goggles, but it's all due to you - THANKS!

Blogcritics and 10 million visitors; growth in many ways
It hasn't all been fun. I guess I'll call that growing pains as everyone sees what fits and everyone else reacts to it.

Or buy the book - via blogcritics

#13 — August 4, 2005 @ 14:53PM — Mark Sahm [URL]

Maybe you've already done this, but I think it would be interesting to have a link of the brief history of BC and how its creators had humble beginnings and limited fundage yet grew the site to where it is now.

Unless of course, the 10 million hits hasn't gone to your head. Congrats.

#14 — August 4, 2005 @ 15:05PM — Matthew T. Sussman [URL]

I am proud to be a part of this and -- with the help of my writing over the past three months -- to bring 10 more hits to the site.

#15 — August 4, 2005 @ 15:10PM — Bob A. Booey [URL]

Have you bought that mansion yet, Olsen?

Out of curiosity, which of you goofs have been around from the beginning?

That is all.

#16 — August 4, 2005 @ 15:32PM — Phillip Winn [URL]

I'll come up with a list of the folks who published the very first week and are still around.

Like me. :-)

#17 — August 4, 2005 @ 15:34PM — Eric Berlin [URL]

I'm wearing two eye patches right now in celebration!

#18 — August 4, 2005 @ 16:01PM — Eric Olsen

good question BAB - eager to see that Phillip!

#19 — August 4, 2005 @ 16:02PM — DJRadiohead [URL]

I know I wasn't first to the party, but I am damn glad to be here. As Keith Richards says, "It's great to be here- it's great to be anywhere."

Cheers, Eric.

#20 — August 4, 2005 @ 16:05PM — Aaman [URL]

While that might be nice spam - it perhaps belongs in the open Culture thread, or send in a press release to the editor/publisher.

#21 — August 4, 2005 @ 16:25PM — Al Barger [URL]

"There's spam, eggs, sausage and spam. That's not got MUCH spam in it.

But I don't want ANY spam."

#22 — August 4, 2005 @ 16:33PM — Mark Saleski [URL]

#25 — August 4, 2005 @ 17:04PM — Phillip Winn [URL]

BAB, I posted the result of a little database-poking, so you can find out who the original lucky 13 are.

#26 — August 4, 2005 @ 17:48PM — Eric Olsen

thanks Mark, Matt and Josh!

#27 — August 4, 2005 @ 18:45PM — Al Barger [URL]

Spam, Hoosier Kentuckian version:

"There's spam, collard greens, pig feet and spam. That's not got MUCH spam in it..."

#28 — August 4, 2005 @ 18:53PM — swingingpuss [URL]

Congratulations, Eric - it's been an honor and fun experience being part of the site - I'm currently staying away to avoid seeing the Harry Potter spoilers till I finish the book.

Kudos to Dawn for sparing so much of your time and putting with all the stress you definitely go through:)

Congratulations to Philip, Temple, the editors and all blogcritics,as well as the readers.

#29 — August 4, 2005 @ 19:57PM — Triniman [URL]

I'm going to redouble my efforts to promote BCs to my friends and aquaintances. I've had the home page as part of my signature block for about a year now, but I will post an article on my blog.

It would be really cool Rolling Stone, and other established media could pick up on this story. Or even Amazon.com. Presumably, we send a lot of traffic their way. Is anything being done to promote our success to other media establishments? Can something be done? I think we have a lot of potential volunteers standing by to help.

Congrats again to Eric, Philip, Temple, Aaman all the other editors and all the writers, both regulars and not so regulars. We're onto to something GREAT here!!

#30 — August 4, 2005 @ 22:32PM — alpha [URL]

10,000,000. It is a BIG number! Congratulations. It is great to get where you wanted to go. It is not always the way it happens.

I hope you enjoy the next challenges at least as much. And the next set of awards and recognition.

Hopefully, I helped a little these past months.

#31 — August 4, 2005 @ 22:58PM — alpha [URL]

I put a 10million picture post on my wordy blog rather than my photoblog. It seemed apt.

Commentaries

It is, far from the cliché, the beginning of the rainbow; not the end.

#32 — August 4, 2005 @ 23:36PM — randy Kirk [URL]

Absolutely amazing. And you did that before the Christians came to seek and destroy. Congratulations to all who were there from the start. The quality of discourse is excellent, and I enjoy every bit of it.

#33 — August 4, 2005 @ 23:40PM — Aaman [URL]

And Randy saith,Go Forth and multiply, ye blogcritics

Thanks Randy - the good stuff always separates from the chaff, or something like that, innit?

#34 — August 5, 2005 @ 04:51AM — jadester [URL]

#35 — August 5, 2005 @ 08:50AM — Eric Olsen

thanks so much guys, and SP, you are so right about Dawn: her tolerance, support, vision and willingness to go for years without much income from me has made my involvement possible!

#36 — August 5, 2005 @ 09:22AM — swingingpuss [URL]

Happy Birthday, Eric - If you were here in Milwaukee, there'd be a piece of cheesecake with your name on it:)

August Fourth was my 34th b-day, the day this was posted. And I just reminded myself at my own blog - archives ya know - that I created that little 10 million served graphic up at the top.

Trafifc is at about 15.7 million today, not yet four months later.

#56 — November 27, 2005 @ 06:05AM — Ruvy in Jerusalem

Mazel Tov, Temple! I see I'll have to post more articles.
