Stargate: SG-What?

Written by Screen Rant
Published August 03, 2005

I find it sad to report that the awesome and amazing television show known as Stargate SG-1 has left the building.

Oh sure, there's still a show filling the time slot with the same name, but Stargate SG-1 it ain't, and my entire family is in mourning. :-(

The first sign of Sci-Fi channel trying to milk the Stargate cow dry was last season's premiere of Stargate: Atlantis. It's not bad, per se, but the only character that's really captured me and become a favorite is Dr. Rodney McKay (played by David Hewlett). Other than that, eh. And now that it's looking like they're going to try to hook up Col. Sheppard with Dr. Weir instead of Teyla, I'm going to start to get annoyed with the show.

With this season of SG-1 there is more milking evident. Richard Dean Anderson has left the show (for the record I commend the man for dropping out to spend time with his family), Amanda Tapping is yet to be seen beyond a brief video-monitor cameo in the season opener, a younger replacement for O'Neil has been brought in who is (who would have guessed) also irreverent and to the point. There's also a new female character whose name escapes me but is infinitely annoying, and one of the Bridges' brothers as the new general. And oh yes, those great opening credits and music have been cut down to just 10 seconds in order to make more time for... extra commercials.

It seems like Christopher Judge (Teal'c) and Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) are just there as window dressing.

Anderson did make a brief appearance in the Season 9 opener, but I swear that he looked like he was either drugged or senile. It was bizarre, to say the least. And for some reason Shanks is delivering his dialogue so quickly this season that I can barely understand what he's saying. Maybe he gets paid by the word this season?

So far the Gould are nowhere to be seen and we have completely new villains who seem to be fanatical religious extremists from another galaxy whose religion you must join or die (make your own connection).

This show should have ended at the end of Season 8, changed a bit to tie up loose threads and either lay the whole thing to rest or replace it with another spinoff. As it stands it's a completely new show masquerading as Stargate SG-1, which it no longer seems to be. That's both sad and a disservice to the fans.

At least I still have SG-1 reruns and Battlestar Galactica...

I never could get into the show. I tried really hard to, even buying season 1 on dvd to no avail.

I've liked the new season of SG-1, granted it isn't at the same level as it has in the past. I think I may be biased, I am a fan of Ben Browder(Mitchell) and Claudia Black(Vala) from their Farscape days, a show I sorely miss. And I do not believe that Black is a regular. Atlantis is sort of growing on me, but the cast chemistry is lacking. Battlestar Galactica is fantastic.

What has annoyed me more is that they've brought in an actor from a failed scifi show [And yes it was a failed show, because if it had the higher ratings, SG1 would have been cancelled instead] and put him above the SG1 regulars in the credits. Browder is not some big star and no bigger in the scifi world than Shanks who was second lead for the last two seasons, so where the heck do they get off giving Browder the lead? The man can't act and if you take away the puppets and the brilliant Claudia Black in Farscape you have nothing. I stopped watching the minute the credits rolled and I realised what a slap in the face the SG1 regulars have gotten.

It's a failed show because Sci-Fi wanted it to fail. It wasn't cancelled due to low ratings, it was one of the highest rated shows on the station, it was cancelled because it cost too much to make. And you are enitled to your opinion of Browder's acting, but I have to disagree. But this isn't about Farscape.

I wouldn't buy Jackson as the team leader, he is more scientist than that, I could have bought Amanda Tapping taking over the lead, but that didn't happen either. I am fine with Browder taking the lead slot.

Stargate has been declining since season 4 in incremental doses, but I think it's actually picked up in season 9 thus far becuase they've got a leadin gman (Mitchell aka Ben Browder) who shows enthusiasm for the role. I must admit I agree with that RDA slept through his guest shot in "Origin"). The actor has never hidden the fact that he's stayed with the show since season 6 in order to keep the show going.

As for Atlantis, it can be rocky, but it's an enjoyable show, and much more fun than Sg-1's season 8.

To each their own, but Starage in both versions are definitely far more enjoyable than the dreck on television.

Remember when Jonas Quinn was brought in on SG-1? They cut the intro down then, too. They didn't want to spoil the show by making it obvious who was a part of the team, I guess?

Perhaps that's what they're doing now, too. They eventually went ahead and had a full-length introduction after a couple of episodes w/ Quinn.

Now if Browder's character could stop being so "southern", and "back on the farm", I think I could dig him as the new leader..

I and several other members of the Yahoo group I belong to were concerned about RDA's performance in Avalon pt 1 and Origin. Someone came up with the idea that since Rick broke his ankle in Jan and got a severe cold during the seal rescue is why he appeared to look so poorly.

I also commend Rick for wanting to 'be there' for his daughter. He didn't want her to go though the same neglect as he did.

I for one LOVE the new season, and have been completely enthralled with Atlantis since the premier episode. I adored Farscape in everyway, and I love seeing Ben and Claudia back together on SG-1. I am really liking the new direction that SG-1 is taking, delving deepier into the mythos of the Ancients (Alterrans). Vala is wonderful, so irreverent and fun to watch, she and Daniel Jackson go together soo great.

As for Atlantis, I couldnt be happier. I love all the characters, the sets are marvelous, the stories (for the most part) are well written and very intruiging. I also love the new direction for the show, especially the Daedalus...and who couldnt love Hermiod:)

Bottom line, I look forward to Sci Fi Friday now more than ever before, including BGS...which totally and completely ROCKS:)

oops, that should be BSG, not BGS...sorry. Referring to Battlestar Galactica.

While I'm not to thrilled by the new direction of SG-1 I will continue to watch as they (hopefully) bring Sam back... Hopefully then it will get better... The new story is pretty cool... I like it...

For Atlantis I'm loving the show dispite the fact that Ford (my favorite) is gone pretty much crazy... I hope that they bring him back before the end of the season... Or at least before the middle of the next season...

BSG is still really cool... I'm kinda confused about what's going on with Baltar... I'm not quite sure how 6 is in his head and talking to him... But other than that I'm loving it more than anything else, except for the Stargates, that is on TV...

IMO the new season shows a lot of promise for several reasons. First, they seem to have put more money into the special effects budget, and that's not a bad thing. Second, I think Bridges has the potential to provide a strong presence to replace Anderson which will work well. Third, from what I saw Shanks and Judge are still playing a major role - they certainly had a lot to do in the most recent episode.

Face it, the ongoing conflict with the Goauld had become tired and repetitive. By season 5 it was really wearing thin. Having a new enemy and exploring the idea of the ascended beings seems like an interesting way to go. Bringing in new ideas and new actors is what will keep the show going. It's worked for other successful series like ER and NYPD Blue and it can work here. It's also realistic - people age and move on and new people come to take their places. It also looks like they're going to play up some of the other SG teams and make them meaningful, which was always a failing in the series. You always saw SG-1, but the other teams were like Star Trek red shirts who died offscreen and were generally only talked about after they were dead.

Finally, given the utter crappiness of most of the other original programming on Sci Fi - IMO including Battlestar Galactica - Stargate SG-1 is going to continue to be the best thing they have going for them.

Dave, you make some excellent points, but this whole new villain thing was just too abrupt IMO. If we had had an inkling of them at least last season or some previous thread (apart from the thin "ascended" connection) it would have been easier to take. Combining a completely new villain and new main characters at the season opener just made it feel like a completely different show. Heck, Atlantis felt like it had more of a connection to the original with it's series premiere than this does, and it's supposed to be the same show.

Sure, new characters work... I've watched "ER" for years as they've brought new characters in, but it's always been kind of a fade in, not dropping a big rock into a small pond.

As to BSG, I really didn't like the pilot but the show has grown on me.

We'll see more of Sam. The actress is just on maternity leave. Until then we get to see Jackson finally show all the angst he has to have built up over the years.

The new season isn't as smart, but frankly if everything stayed the same it would have been boring. I think this season is fun to watch so I'm going to stick with it.

Yeah... the whole religious fanatic race is sort of annoying.

#14 — August 19, 2005 @ 23:15PM — Amy

Is Vala really gone? Is Sam really back? Please, let Vala stay! She added a spark to the show that was missing with Richard Dean Anderson gone. Amanda Tapping's character has annoyed me from show #1 and my whole family watches as I read or leave the room out of boredom. With Claudia Black on the show I have really gotten into it and would hate to see her off the show.

I also like the new male character on SG Atlantis (which I didn't watch until he started on it). I just waited through the other two shows for BSG, which I love (maybe because I was at that prime preteen age when the original was out. I cna't see Edward James Olmos in that cape that the old Adama wore...)

#15 — August 25, 2005 @ 10:27AM — Brian

I too am disappointed about RDA leaving the show, yet I understand his reasons. I am a diehard SG1 fan, and will support the show as long as it's on. I love the whole concept of going to other worlds, and the commitment from the producers for season 9 promise to do more of this. I agree with some on the comments regarding the need to bring in a new villian. The goauld, although still present (Baal is in coming episode)has been exhausted. It makes sense that with the power vaccum, another species will come out of the woodwork and rise to power. I'm excited to see Carter back, and I would like to see Vala, as I believe she adds a disruptive element to the show. As long as she does not become a part of the team. It will take some time to get used to Ben as the team leader, but something had to be done to revitalize the team. I miss Don Davis as Hammond, but Beau Bridges lends a lot of credabilty to his role. The show is finally on the map and attracting more well known talent, although the casting has always been good. I will continue to watch and support the show, and any true fan will.

Galactica? Are you high? You really believe that farscape sg-1(not a typo) is better that galactica? What a sad little fanboy!

The last season finale is a terribly lazy and disappointing end to what has been a great series. Bah!

#18 — April 6, 2007 @ 18:25PM — Tina

The character vala is sluty, old and she is a loser. She is the reason sg-1 is ending and she is stealing the spotlight and making the show all about her. She dresses like a whore to make men attracted to her since she is so ugly she has to use her body. I will say that I love her hair its so nice!! But she is a two timing old wrinkley stupid big mouth sluty character. I miss the original team. Sam,Daniel,Tealc and mitchell rock they are the best!!!!!!!!!! Vala needs to go to another show or just flat out fall dead. I'm not to crazy about hating characters on a t.v show but I hate vala.

#19 — April 6, 2007 @ 18:30PM — Nanny

The character vala is wack i totally agree. She is ugly but after seeing that ugly wrinkley face you get used to seeing it. I love the hair too!! But she has ok moments. She is all about the sex appeal and to be honest the writers could have at least gotten a character who is actually appealing and or attractive, but they just got a ugly ho to do it.And its sad. Maybe vala has a STD since she sleeps around and acts like a sluty whorein' ho.LOL!!! But seriously!!!

#20 — April 6, 2007 @ 18:34PM — kelly s

Vala sucks and she's a loser!! Farscape is over so get over it!Its been over for a long time and not many people have ever heard of it so, GROW UP AND GET A LIFE! Stargate is NOT farscape. Love sg-1 Mitchell, daniel, sam and tealc rock !!!!!!!!!! Miss jack though!

Thanks for your contributions kids but, as an adult, I have to say you've no idea what you're talking about. Vala is hot and one of the only things that kept Stargate interesting as it limped towards the pathetic season finale.

#27 — April 7, 2007 @ 05:50AM — Nanny [URL]

Haha Christopher Rose is the only thing that is pathetic.
