Ok, here's the thing, this southern music, you like it, well, I like it, sometimes, well, depending, but it's like you feel guilty enjoying it, you know? It's not, as Chuck D might opine, sophisticated. I like this mike jones shit. Especially the single, you feel it, it's saying something. It's saying that, well, back then hoes didn't want him, now he's hot as molasses or whatever, I think he's saying "hot as hot dogs on me?" not sure, but the jist is, he was a run of the mill chunky dude, at least in the eyes of the ladies, and now he's king of the hill, all cuz grammamma told him to use his name and give out his cell number on record and say his name over and over and over again, and, well, you know what, it works.
For a while. The single (Back Then) is hot. A few songs later, though, you start getting irritated. Especially when he says that he's in the "turning lane" about 900 times in a row. But the really odd part, is that you listen to this record for the fourth time, and suddenly it doesn't bother you, now you like it. It's, I don't know, imperturbable? No, that's not the right word. It's uncanny. Like mutants in Westchester, you're not quite sure what it's about.
Then there's "Still Tippin'", which sounds a lot like "Back Then" but not. I can't really describe it. And it's got Paul Wall, who, besides having a great name (tell me a better one, please) can rap the doors off. Paul kind of reminds me, and not in his flow or style, but in the way he snuck up on me as an unexpected stand-out voice, of Soljah Slim (RIP), the way he shined on those old Master P no limit joints.
And then there's song 11, a remix to the song "cuttin'" which has, seriously, a sample of "yodel ay hee hoo", like, the yodel? And what's weird is it works. This is an album that the first time you hear it, aside from a few songs, you're ready with the shovel to bury rap music, and then on the fifth or sixth listen, you're at the diamond teeth store, dropping your kid's college fund on a blinged out grill. It's, as said, uncanny. And there's the fact that Mr. Jones can actually rap, in between spittin out his name & phone number and repeating the chorus for the 18th time, there are some gems.
Anyway, the "it grows on you like a weed" phenomenon, combined with the production, which ain't half bad, and works for the material, and despite and, conversely, because of, the repetitive lyrics over & over again, and the listenability curve which takes more turns than an anaconda after a cough syrup binge, lead me to the inexorable conclusion that I'd recommend it. To myself, at least. Aloha.
