Toby Keith's Honkytonk University: I Give It An A

In one of his last releases under the Dreamworks label, before going out on his own, Toby Keith delivers another winner.

The multi-platinum song-writer, country superstar follows up the chart-topping Shock-n-Y'all with a return to a more vintage Toby. While the title cut an autobiographical "Honkytonk U" offer Toby at his Rockin' Roadhouse best, the rest of the cuts display a softer or more introspective side of Toby. To me clearly the best cut is Toby's next single - "As Good As I Once Was" a tune that appeals to those whose are trying to hold onto the glory days.

Toby fulfills another wish when he records with one of his idols Merle Haggard on "She Ain't Hooked On Me No More." Lost and losing love seems to run through a number of the tracks - some more successful than others. In "Just The Guy To Do It" Toby displays some of the swagger that makes women swoon and guys say, "I wish I had the guts to say that." One of the more interesting songs on the CD is one called "Big Blue Note" I'm not sure how to classify it, but after a few hearings it grows on you.

The remaining cuts are okay, but I won't expect them to make it as singles. On the whole this is another solid release from Toby and I'm sure will garner him some more #1's and more fans.

Scott,

Didn't quite convince me to buy the guy. (Dixie Chicks are still much better)

Still, this post has been digitally replicated over at Advance.net, a place affiliated with about 10 newspapers around the country.

One such site is here.

Also please let your contact know, if you had one, that this article, is published at one more place. That helps to show they get two?, three? for the "price" of one.

Delayed much in the transfer? Yep.

Thank you.

This guy is an idiot. Every time he talks he comes off like a fool, and every time I actually listen to his lyrics I am sure he is an idiot. He goes on and on about war everytime he talks, but sits here taking it easy and cashing checks as people die? What a jerk.

hi-
I don't even have the cd, but i hate the way people are talking about Toby Keith. they're mad at him for supporting our troops-they're not even talking about his music. man, at least this guy is sticking his neck out there and speaking his mind-standing behind the people out there who risk their lives for us everyday.
if you want to criticize the music, go ahead. but don't go turning this into some mean political match.
