24 H in a D : Puzzled?
Published May 18, 2005
That was the easy one.
I hesitate to put this here because of all the pissants - but enjoy, nevertheless.
Figure out these puzzles (Don't scroll down to comments if you don't want the answers because sure as shit someone's gonna feel the need to give theirs. (Go to my site if you want to see how I did, but I'm not trying to start a "who can lie most convincingly about their score" contest here. No doubt this puzzle list is somewhere else on the Web.)
19 is supposed to be a good score.
This came in a Word Excel file, which made it harder because it wouldn't give a correct answer unless you also spelled everthing correctly. I know Windows people have virus problems with Excel macros and so forth (though I doubt this has those). My girlfriend forwarded it to me and she has a Windows XP with all kinds of anti-software.
The Excel file will tell you after you type in your answer whether you got it right I know how Windows people have virus problems with Excel macros and so forth (though I doubt this has those).
The list of questions to figure out.

There are 1000 closed doors and there are 1000 people. Person 1 opens all the doors. Person 2 changes every other door, i.e., he closes doors 2,4,6, etc. Person 3 changes every 3rd door, i.e., he closes the 3rd door, opens the sixth, etc. This goes on until person 1000 changes the 1000th door -- opens it, if it was closed, closes it, if it was open. How many open doors are there after all 1000 people have done their thing?
That is awesome Duane - and I am going to literally sleep on it. I will come back to it. I could see me usign this in a novel.
Interesting stuff, Temple - will explore.
Incidentally, the term is "Excel file" - Word and Excel are two separate programs with different file formats. That may be a different kind of puzzle than the one you refer to.
Not another puzzle to drive me nuts. I already am having a tough time with that famous puzzle called - Petals Around the Rose.
Ok, I wrote it down... is that cheating?
The answer is 31. What ends up happening is that the doors that are left open are the perfect squares between 1 and 1000. I won't get into why it happens this way, but just try it out for yourself on a set of small numbers like say 1 to 10. You will see that door #1, door #4, and door #9 remain open.
Peace.
where are the answers to the ones on top? I need them as soon as possible!
right now not tomorrow.ok.

2 H (B A in D)
Oh yeah, I forgot to give the answer to #2. Keeler (#8) got it. For math geeks, the answer, for any number of doors (N) is
# open doors = int[sqrt(N)]
Right. Here's another one for math geeks (no calculators allowed).
Q: Which is greater, e^pi or pi^e ?*
* e is the base of the common logarithm, pi is, well, you know, and the ^ symbol means "raised to the power."
i need help with these so can somebody help me.
