Stronach Crosses The Floor

The political climate in Canada is changing yet again. Today, Belinda Stronach just crossed the floor of Parliament's House of Commons, changing parties from the Conservatives into a Liberal. It's a huge shot in the arm for the Liberal party. With just 2 days before the Federal budget and by doing this she has helped the Liberals in their quest in passing the budget and keeping their name and party in tact. To thank her for jumping ship, Stronach was automatically given a portfolio and is now minister of human resources and skills development.

It seems that she was feeling a little bitter because of her loss to Stephen Harper (the leader of the Conservative party). It has been said that they voted against the Liberals as late as last week, plus she was dating or still dating the deputy leader of the Conservatives, Peter McKay. Does this way on this in any way? Hm... It certainly makes one wonder.

So why did she do this? She says she didn't like the direction that the Conservative party was heading, well sure, that is what she said, but most Canadians and especially the press that was there for the press conference figures she did it to further her political career. 'It is just a power grab', stated one parliamentarian. 'It is just ambition' said another.

Right now, the Canadian government is turning out to be a joke. During the press conference, the press were even laughing at the Prime Minister when he said it had nothing to do with the vote on Thursday. She is a political opportunist and a traitor plain and simple. If the Liberals were smart, they would all quit and let the Conservative (such as they are) move in, perhaps the Conservatives being the lesser of two evils. But the whole Canadian political scene should be laughed at, but unfortunately, we Canadians aren't laughing!

re:Belinda Stonach

I would agree that the lady is seeking to further her own agenda with crossing the floor to join with the Liberals. But in reality all of the politicians are serving their own agendas. They are aligned with a party, but they all serve their own needs in one way or another. This is nothing new. Steven Harper obviously has his own agenda, and that is to topple the government at any cost. By joining the Bloc Quebecois who open wishes to seperate from the country has Mr Harper not in fact betrayed the rest of the country. The west like it or not is a part of that country and I for one am very disturbed at his approach and his reasoning. I consider his actions as being against the good of the nation as a whole simply so he can bring down the liberals and hopefully become the next prime minister.
The fact that Ms Stronach is already an extremely powerful woman privately shows that she has nothing to offer but her own ideals to change. She does not need politics to be successful.
We see only what we are shown in the news and I am sure that there is more to this than what we have been told.
Personally I would support Ms Stronach, not because she is who she is but by all appearances she is doing the right thing because she believes it is the right thing to do. Her timing could be political suicide and yet she has still done it, and that is a pretty gutsy thing to do.

"Convictions"? Excuse me while I collapse in laughter. Her use of federalism as justification for jumping ship is laughable -- the longer the federal Liberals stay in power, the more popular the Bloc and PQ get in Quebec. If Belinda really thought the country was more important than partisanship, she would've done her damndest to bring down a government that should've fallen a long time ago.

Congratulations to both Belinda and Paul, This move has been a stroke of genius. Mr. Harper needs to "suck it up" and accept that in spite of his incessant whining he has been out manouvered, out witted, and out played. If you choose to play and throw rocks with the big guys, you should be prepared to receive dramatic response. The snivelling comments from linguistic giants in the Harper camp have cemented the right wing, "women don't speak here" politics which we have witnessed throughout the Harper organisation. Belinda has no need to be the leader of the party, she chooses not to be one of the faithful, impotent followers of a mediocre leader. She will I hope be a major contributor in the future politics of Canada. This woman has come from a very successful business upbringing and career where results count, not just playing the game.

Sounds a lot like Senator Jeffords to me...

Her career is finished, when the Conservatives retake power in Canada...

It appears Cher Gruener is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. The press were laughing at Martin saying it had nothing to do with the vote because it was obvious sarcasm. So obvious in fact, it's a wonder the author of this "fine" (see, there it is again!) article didn't manage to grasp it him/herself.
