CD review: Silent Edge almost there

The Eyes of the Shadow
Silent Edge
(DVS)
Silent Edge produce Euro-keyboard led prog/power metal that while competent and well played does not exactly raise itself above the pack. These guys are very good at what they do but do lapse into muso-like widdling at times, only one track is less than 5 minutes for instance. They clearly admire bands like Dream Theater but lord knows the world needs another DT clone like a hole in the head. This lot do have quite a bit of potential as demonstrated on tracks like the majestic 'Lost Conscience'. Lead singer 'Willem Verwoert's' vocals are a wee bit Gowan-esque The trouble is that the CD does not really muster enough to bear up to repeated listens. Silent Edge clearly have what it takes to be in the premier league but need to find a bit more originality for their next release. It would help if the keyboards were turned down a bit and not as prominent in the tracks as they get a bit widdly rather often. I am betting this lot are brilliant live and look forward to seeing them in London sometime soon. I do so want to give this CD a better rating but it clearly lacks that something special.
