CD review: Elf springs Dio

Elf
(Epic)

While in West Wales a few weeks ago; I happened to end up in a CD store and had a look round. Elf's debut was only £6, so I picked it up. Unlike many albums from the early 70s, this one has aged rather well. Elf, featuring Ronnie James Dio, produce honky-tonk Blues rock that is not that far away from Status Quo (if predating their version). A four piece featuring piano, guitar, drums and bass (played by RJD) this lot produce so damn fine tunes; some of which are rather amusing, especially 'Dixie Lee Junction'. There are shades of Free and Bad Company on this CD as well. Now while it is not essential for anyone; its a rather interesting way to have a peek into the past of one the most famous voices in metal. RJD does seem to have a habit of being involved in rather good recordings, with very few exceptions.

Rating: 3.5/5

Marty's band, Growing Old Disgracefully, can be found at: Disgraceful Music. His Cthulhu tales can be found at Temple of Dagon.
