Marty: The entire performance seemed to aimed more at making it fun for the band rather than for the audience. SS could do a bit better at pleasing the paying audience rather than showing off their elite skills (impressive though they are). Post-gig, while waiting for the Meet & Greet which Jason fortunately skipped, I chatted to a few of the punters who paid £25 for the gig; including a pair who had spent £500 on the gig if one included their fare from the Channel Islands. The reaction to the gig was a bit mixed but biased towards the positive rather than the negative.

Jason: The set was really cracking along with the band hitting a great groove but then we had an instrumental break and for me the gig lost its momentum then. Yes it's great to have a jam session from such top musicians but I would have thought most of the audience would have preferred a few Journey numbers! Marco Mendoza also did a weird and wonderful six-string bass solo where he added scat and mouth percussion noises. Luckily JSS came to the rescue with his piano spot. He sang some Journey songs including "Who's Crying Now?" plus a bit of solo, Seal's "Crazy" (a staple of JSS solo shows) and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody."

He finished with Prince's "Purple Rain" by which time the band had rejoined and gave the song a storming finish. Only one short and frankly mediocre encore meant I didn't enjoy this gig as much as I thought I would. For me a shorter jam session and more Journey/JSS/Talisman tunes next time please.

Marty: A little less self-indulgent musing would have gone a long way to make the gig great rather than just decent. Let's hope the band have gotten it out of their system and next time they come to the UK their performance is a bit less patchy.

Rating: 4/5

Marty,

This work of yours now has another venue for success, glory and taking control of the world :-) - and many more eyes - at the Advance.net Web sites, a place affiliated with about 12 newspapers.

One such site is here.

Also please let your contact know, if you had one, that this article, is published at one more place. That helps a lot.

Thank you.
