Cake, Gomez and Robbers rock the U of MN with Virgin Mega Tour
Published May 04, 2005
Cake, Gomez and Robbers on High Street News brought 2005's Virgin Mega Tour to the University of Minnesota's Northrop Auditorium on Thursday, April 28, providing students and other Minnesotans a night of great music.
Robbers on High Street got the show going with several songs off their debut, Tree City, including "Japanese Girls" and "Amanda Green." Led by Ben Trokan's work on keyboards and vocals, Robbers' melodies and lyrics are reminiscent of Spoon or the Beatles. The band ended their show with "Debonair," a track off their Fine Lines EP.
U.K.'s Gomez was next in line, with a hefty set of songs ranging in all different directions. Supporting their to be released double live album Out West, the guys played a number of numbers, including "Silence," "We Haven't Turned Around," and "Machismo," switching lead vocalists and instruments as often as they changed songs. The band tried to cater to the delays between songs by talking to the crowd a lot. Nearing the end of their set Tom Gray asked the crowd, "Do any of you even fucking know who we are," probably noting the crowd's anxiety for the main event.
But it was Cake who finally got the crowd cheering, thanks to lead John McCrea, deliciously amusing fans by handclaps, disco balls and unusual musical instruments. Cake broke out some gems early on in the set with "Frank Sinatra," and "Sheep Go to Heaven" with new song "Wheels," off last year's Pressure Chief, blending in with early favorites. Almost contending with McCrea's powers of seduction over a hungry crowd is Vincent Di Fiore on trumpet and melodica, the perfect accompaniment to the mad lyricist. If this performance didn't materialize how it is to have one's cake and eat it too, nothing else will.
