American Idol - Episode 420a - Another Woman Down
Published March 30, 2005
Not exactly a surprise tonight that Jessica Sierra was the first of the Top 10 contestants to leave the show. While it wasn't as easy a call as losing Lindsey Cardinale in the first week and Mikalah Gordon last week, among a talented group of performers, Jessica was more than a little bit out of her league. In fact, I said recently that there's only room for one blonde in this competition, and Jessica isn't it. Apparently, America agreed.
Jessica's performance wasn't necessarily the worst last night--that honor would have to go to Anthony Fedorov, who really managed to butcher Elton John's "Something About The Way You Look Tonight." But Anthony, for whatever reason, has managed to accrue what appears to be a substantial fan base, a fact that might just keep him safe for more than a few weeks to come.
It's tough to say what exactly the audience is basing their votes on this season. Vocals clearly are not the only thing being taken into consideration, no matter what the judges might think. Yes, this is a singing competition, but there is much more to a pop star than vocal ability. The contestants who so far have managed to avoid landing in the bottom three are those with personality, those who have found a niche and really distinguished themselves from the group.
But there's something else at play here: experience. The first three contestants voted out of the Top 12 are also among the youngest three in the competition: Lindsey (20), Mikalah (17), and now Jessica (19) lack the added "oomph" that the older singers seem to have. Constantine Maroulis and Bo Bice, both 29, are clearly the most comfortable on stage, largely because they have the most experience touring with their respective bands. That same experience allows them to form a rapport with the audience, something that even the better singers like Carrie Underwood (21) haven't managed to really do.
So what does this mean for next week? Well, we had predicted that Anthony would be the one to go this week, and he wasn't even in the bottom 3. But, at age 19, he is now the youngest remaining contestant. His fans came back strong this week after last week's scare, but will they do so again next time around?
Of course, then there's the matter of Nadia Turner, who's been in the bottom three for two weeks running. Nadia certainly has plenty of stage presence, but for whatever reason, she just hasn't managed to connect with the audience. If Anthony's fans keep coming through, we could possibly lose Nadia next week.

I was thinking that Jessica would make bottom 3 this time but not get booted this early. Weird. I was hoping Anthony would be booted for that awful performance from last night. He just looked awkward performing like he tries too hard. But it looks as though he has the fan base. I give him 1 more week granted Nadia has picks a better song next time. I also thought Scott would be destined for bottom three-dom this week too. Maybe Nadia and Anwar didn't sound as good this week but they can perform. Poor Scotty just has zero charisma. Based on Tyler's comment about Jessica being too ugly, Scott should have been booted a long time ago...
"Based on Tyler's comment about Jessica being too ugly, Scott should have been booted a long time ago..."
Then you must have missed my earlier posts (on different entries of Scott Pepper's) where I pointed out women tend to be judged on looks, by both men and women.
Men don't face the same scrutiny.
That's why all of us knew Jessica wouldn't remain in the competition: her face was too ugly to win. She would lose votes by men and women to other people.
What Scott has working for him is that he is white, but sounds black. Thus his following is both white and black, which is more than can be said for people who only appeal to white people (Bo, Carrie, etC) and those who only appeal to black (Nikko, Vonzell, etc.)
Scott is the x factor in AI4.
I was shocked that Simon said Scott should have been in the bottom 3, and not Anthony. I wasn't expecting that.
Excuse me, Mr. Newton: Where in the heck do you get the stones to say something so patently ludicrous as "people who only appeal to white people (Bo, Carrie, etC) and those who only appeal to black (Nikko, Vonzell, etc.)"
It simply terrifies me that people exist who would even think something like that. And how the hell does some look "white" or sound "black"? Man, I can't get over how offensive that statement of yours is... ewww... it even felt dirty re-reading and cutting-and-pasting those words. Disgusting.
Mr. Newton, does no one in your world purely and simply like music -- or is everyone, apparently like you, blinded and imprisoned by labels and often erroneous societal categorizations?
Consider that rhetorical. I don't think I wish to partake of your prose again.
i totally agree with you about Bo& Constantine versus Carrie! she's really not all there during her performances...
""people who only appeal to white people (Bo, Carrie, etC) and those who only appeal to black (Nikko, Vonzell, etc.)""
I meant to say primarily appeal to white people and primarily appeal to black people.
"And how the hell does some look "white" or sound "black"?"
Ever heard of EMINEM? He has white/caucasian skin, but sounds black. He's a "wigga." Ask black people what that means, and they will tell you. Fellow white rapper Bubba Sparxx falls in the same category. He is white, but sounds black.
Ditto that for B-Rad, character from the film "Malibu's Most Wanted." Looks white, sounds black.
Scott Savol is an Eminem clone. He has white/caucasian skin, but sounds black.
Eminem has such popularity not only because of his talent, but because he has the best of both worlds. The looks of an attractive white man that appeals to whites, especially white women, and the black rapper sounds which many black people love.
That is why Scott is the X factor.
I don't see how that is offensive, and by the way, I AM NOT WHITE/CAUCASIAN/WHATEVER.
"Mr. Newton, does no one in your world purely and simply like music -- or is everyone, apparently like you, blinded and imprisoned by labels and often erroneous societal categorizations?"
If our society watched AI for the music talent, Jessica would not be off. But ask Scott Pepper why Jessica couldn't hang in AI, when she admittedly has one of the best voices: because her face is too ugly, and our society (not me) judges women based on looks.
When you ask doesn't anyone in my world purely and simply like music, you need to ask doesn't anyong in THIS world purely and simply like music? Jessica is a shining example of how little OUR ENTIRE SOCIETY cares about the actual music, if the female package is not attractive.
"Of course, then there's the matter of Nadia Turner, who's been in the bottom three for two weeks running. Nadia's problem is simple. She is trying to hard to win instead of just being herself.
She hears Randy Jackson say he'd like a "Rocker" to win it, and Nadia is totally going for that image to try to compete with Bo.
That's why fans are not into her. Originally her fans thought was going to be the next Fantasia, or perhaps Tamayra Gray, but now she's going for the whole black Nikki Mckibbin thing, and it doesn't work.
She can't pull it off and will not make it past either next week or the week after, unless Fremantle Media/19 Ent/FOX wants to keep her around, in which case they'll make next week "Motown" week just so she can "Sound black" again.
Most black singers are not cut out for rock. LaToya London, who has a BAND in Oakland, is an exception to the rule. So it Lajon Witherspoon, brilliant frontman for Sevendust.
Nadia needs to go back to her R&B roots if she wants a chance. Bo isn't foolish enough to try R&B, so why should Nadia keep pushing the rock thing?
ALL EXCLUSIVE ON ANTHONY FEDOROV:
NEVER BEFORE SEEN VIDEO!!
it is very interesting that Nadia has clearly gone in the rock/alt rock direction of late. What's particularly interesting is I think she is exactly "being herself" by doing this and people just don't know how to react to it - she has removed a comfort factor and that is why she has been in the bottom three of late. She will have to decide what is more important to her and adjust accordingly
Nadia sings her songs like she's pounding a punching bag. Her attempt at high energy comes across as pissed off. She screams her songs.
she has seemed a bit "strident" in rock mode
"Scott Savol is an Eminem clone. He has white/caucasian skin, but sounds black."
What kind of a comment is that?!
First of all, Eminem sounds like Eminem. He has his own unique style of rapping just like all other rappers. I can say this objectively because I am not really a fan of Eminem (particularly for his style of rapping).
Secondly, it's obvious that Scott prefers to perform songs from African American artists. Is this your logic with him sounding black? Because to me, he doesn't sound "black." In fact, this week he sounded "really crappy."
By the way, you don't have to be "WHITE/CAUCASIAN/WHATEVER" to make an offensive comment.
Hey, did the gang not do a cheesy Ford commercial last night?

Why are people so PC that they cannot simply admit they KNOW it means to be white, but sound black???
To make it clear although unnecessary, Scott Savol, along with Eminem, Bubba Sparxx, etc, naturally speak using African-American Vernacular.
Comedian Ralphie May also naturally speaks using African-American Vernacular.
Like I said before, a whole movie was made about white people who naturally use AA Vernacular: "Malibu's Most Wanted."
Scott is the X factor because he is a white guy who NATURALLY uses African-American Vernacular. This means he will likely appeal to white and black alike. Keep in mind the two largest racial groups in the country are caucasians and african-americans. Scott appeals to both with his looks + naturally sounding African-American vernacular.
Hopefully I said African-American vernacular enough times so you all will finally understand what I am talking about.
Ask a linguist, they will explain to you just as I did. Eminem, just like Scott Savol and the fictional character "B-Rad," grew up around African-Americans, so they speak like African-Americans and have a lot of A-A culture in them.
"Hey, did the gang not do a cheesy Ford commercial last night?"
You must have missed the hideously dumb commercial with life-sized puppet replica's of the AI finalists.
The finalists didn't actually appear, but they sang in it AND of course the puppets look like them.
I think that Scott's been torpedoed by The Smoking Gun. I found it interesting to see his little domestive violence rap sheet, but on close examination it wasn't all that violent - the only ominous part was him telling his ex to 'watch her back.' It's a case of TSG having skewed the voting, I think, and it just strikes me as strange. Why'd they do it? What's the agenda? I think Scott is the guy who could go any which way - at least a potential top 3, though not a winner - it's only an opinion, but if you went on sheer vocal power Carrie Underwood has that sewn up, if you go on package Bo Bice or Constantine Maroulis seem likely.
My personal favorite, me, the "opera singer?" Bo. It kicks my ass to see a rocker up there, and he's already a pro.

Jessica was no surprise, because as we said, she couldn't win because was too ugly, even if she was one of the best singers in the competition.
I would like to point out that I correctly said Nadia and Anwar would be in tbe bottom 3, and sure enough they complied.
Nadia and Anwar's days are numbered,
thank god.
