American Idol - Episode 420 - 1990s

We are down to the Top 10 finalists on Season Four of American Idol, and tonight the remaining singers took on songs of the 1990s. Some of the song choices were safe and obvious, but there were more than a few surprises:

1. Bo Bice - "Remedy" - The Black Crowes
2. Jessica Sierra - "On the Side of Angels" - LeAnn Rimes
3. Anwar Robinson - "I Believe I Can Fly" - R. Kelly
4. Nadia Turner - "I'm the Only One" - Melissa Ethridge
5. Constantine Maroulis - "I Can't Make You Love Me" - Bonnie Raitt
6. Nikko Smith - "Can We Talk" - Code Red
7. Anthony Fedorov - "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" - Elton John
8. Carrie Underwood - "Independence Day" - Martina McBride
9. Scott Savol - "One Last Cry" - Brian McKnight
10. Vonzell Solomon - "I Have Nothing (If I Don't Have You)" - Whitney Houston

ZMethos: It's easiest to start with the clear winners tonight, the people who sang well: Bo, Constantine, and Carrie top my list. Bo is almost always at the top of my list (I admit my bias), but Constantine surprised me in his choice of a Bonnie Raitt song--that he managed to pull off! Although I suspect his choice was due in large part to the fact that it gave him plenty of opportunity to make the "smoldering eyes" at the cameras.

Carrie was in her usual element (read "country"), and as always she did it well; she could easily become a country star. However, I worry that her repetitious sound on the show will become tiring.

Close seconds tonight: Nadia and Vonzell, both of whom did well. I'm still iffy about Nikko's and Scott's performances; with Nikko, he again chose a song I wasn't familiar with, although I must admit he performed with energy, and Scott sounded a bit strangled.

Scott: No question about the top three, but, quite frankly, I thought the rest of the performances tonight were horrible.

The bottom three with be Anthony, Nadia, and Anwar...and leaving us will be,

in a shocker (but not to most of us in the know),

ANWAR.

He's done. Anthony might have been worse, but he's got a following. I feel many Anwar fans will be changing their vote to Vonzell.

Anyone else TIRED of Simon always grouping Bo and Constantine together? Tonight he said "Constantine outsung Bo."

I think this is his sly way to try to make sure only one of these guys is in the finals.

Why not say, "Tonight, I think you outsung NIKKO?"

This is total BS. I am getting sick of the judges lumping Bo and Constantine together. It's plain as day that they sound completely different.

If we are going to lump them together, then we need to make these pairings for comparisons:

Nadia/Vonzell
Jessica/Carrie (both love country!)
Nikko/Anwar

It's very frustrating to see FOX try to make sure we don't have a Bo vs. Constantine final by always having judges compare the two.

Two fun observations from the show:

1.) Did anyone notice the signs tonight? Usually you see those stupid signs little girls make, but I saw one that caught my eye. It said, "VOTE 4 PEDRO." Hilarious Napoleon Dynamite reference. Awesome (I had previously thought FOX only allowed posters re: AI).

2.) Anyone see the big football player dude who was a weak AI3 finalist in the front row right behind the judges? I forget his name, but I am surprised Ryan Seacrest didn't go say hi on air. Usually he does when ex-AI people are in the audience. Add to that we saw a lot of him on camera during the show. It was odd they didn't acknowledge it.

thanks guys, Constantine has really grown on me in the finals and keeps getting stronger. I think Scott was the weakest, but Anthony seems genetically predisposed to pick only songs that suck

Another slightly funny but useless observation about the signs: I saw two girls (okay, they happened to be blondes--I can say this b/c I are one) screaming their heads off while holding their signs *upside down.*

Okay, it happens. But still a little tickle on the funnybone.

Did anyone else seem to think that Paula was a bit "happy" last night. Perhaps a bit under the influence of let's say...alcohol. Glassy eyes, faraway look, maybe she always looks like that, just curious...she seemed a bit soshed to me..
