TV: The Week Ahead for March 28, 2005

So many shows, so little space on the TiVo.

Monday - March 28

Fear Factor (NBC, 8:00pm EST)

Last week, a California woman nearly drowned when her car was swept away in a flash flood. But she had seen an episode of Fear Factor in which contestants had to escape from a sinking car and, using the tactics detailed on the show, managed to escape. Host Joe Rogan greeted her the next morning on Good Morning America with a bouquet of flowers. So, while I would normally advise against watching this show, it's hard to say "skip it" this week. Verdict: Watch it.

The Bachelor (ABC, 9:00pm EST)

Now in its seventh iteration, the original reality dating show has enlisted Charlie O'Connell (late of Sliders and Dude, Where's My Car?) to choose his mate from a bevy of 25 beauties. This version of the show has been touted as more unpredictable, with multiple eliminations and other rule-bending tricks. Verdict: TiVo it.

Tuesday - March 29

House (Fox, 9:00pm EST)

Never mind the increasingly improbably plotlines. It's worth a willing suspension of disbelief just to watch Hugh Laurie chew up scenery as TV's crankiest doctor. The supporting cast (including Chi McBride, Robert Sean Leonard, and Omar Epps) is equally impressive. Verdict: Watch it.

Starlet (The WB, 9:00pm EST)

It's no American Idol (heck, it's not even America's Next Top Model), but it could be worth checking out tonight to see the remaining four wannabe starlets perform a scene from Friends at a Hollywood comedy club. Verdict: TiVo it.

The Amazing Race 7 (CBS, 9:00pm EST)

As if it wasn't painful enough to watch Rob and Amber lie and cheat their way to the top on Survivor: All Stars, now we have to see it again on what was previously one of the better reality competitions. Verdict: Skip it.

Wednesday - March 30

Alias (ABC, 9:00pm EST)

Continuing its strong fourth season, J.J. Abrams' original prime-time thrill ride (yes, Lost is finally back tonight) takes a cue from Kill Bill in tonight's episode, which finds Syd buried alive and the rest of the team in quarantine. Verdict: Watch it.

Seeing Erin on The Apprentice get the boot was about as much fun as one can have while watching television. Did anyone notice how her body (and ego) swayed from side to side as she walked toward the Loser's Side elevator? I believe that she was absolutely convinced that she was going to wink and sweet talk Trump right into the finals. I'm glad he didn't take her up on it.

Last Thursday night was a banner night for reality TV as far as I'm concerned: Erin sent packing on Apprentice and Mikalah Gordon out of American Idol ... good stuff all around.

Don't forget Making the Band III (Jason has arrived... Must See TV) and PoweR Girls on MTV. Thursday's by far my fave night for TV right now. We'll see as Lost is returning to new eps this week.

It is either Sunday (Simpsons, Arrested Development, Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal) or Wednesday (American Idol, Lost, Alias) for me. Monday (24) and Thursday (Apprentice) are also pretty solid. I think the last time I watched MTV was about 10 years ago.
