Those nice Germans

Well from the evidence we are getting from David, they hate us.

Oh yes and Damian has details on how Hitler kept his people happy. Or to put it another way:

As such, most Germans saw Nazism as a "warm-hearted" protector, says Aly, author of the new book Hitler's People's State: Robbery, Racial War and National Socialism and currently a guest lecturer at the University of Frankfurt. They were only too happy to overlook the Third Reich's unsavory, murderous side.

John Ray has written on the subject of Hitler on BNN.

Marty's band, Growing Old Disgracefully, can be found on: CD Baby His Cthulhu tales can be found at Temple of Dagon.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here, Marty.

#2 — March 24, 2005 @ 23:55PM — francisco68 [URL]

Eric is right. The post is vague but the links and your blog are impressive. Just think, only 50 odd years ago they were calmly killing, stealing, torturing, and trying to annex the world with an organized and inhuman ability to separate themselves from their heinous actions. "It wasn't us who murdered 10's of millions of Jews, Gypsies, Russians, English, Dutch, Communists, political opponents...It was 'them'."
You remind me to rethink my statements when I class George Bush or Pat Robertson as 'Fascists'. The real thing still lurks in the dark side of European thought. Or so your blog and the links from it make it appear. It makes for a good read.

Hmmm. I went to the 'they hate us' link and I didn't see any evidence that they hate us. Did I miss something?

They stereotyped, but we do that to. America has stereotyped blondes as ditzy but that doesn't mean we hate blondes. The guys on Queer Eye are stereotypes but the show isn't anti-gay.

I do think putting the two types side by side and putting the quotes they did, side by side, does show a bias. But we do that here too.

How does Hitler fit into that Stern article again?

#4 — March 25, 2005 @ 07:19AM — Andrew Ian Dodge [URL]

Steve I would recommend that you read some of the other entries on David's site to see the level of anti-Americanism that exists in Germany.

I would agree that the title of this post is a bit weak; I am sometime pretty horrid at coming up with a good headline.

#5 — March 25, 2005 @ 07:25AM — SFC Ski

Well, I have lived in Germany, and I would say the Germans don't hate us, but if you watch their media, you'd think that they do, you'd also think that the Germans are so preoccupied with the US that they think of nothing else.

#6 — March 25, 2005 @ 16:36PM — Mike

I don't see hate in the Stern article, but I do see dehumanization and the promotion of xenophobia and ignorance. (This is certainly not unique to the German press.)

As an American, I find it curious that while many Europeans correctly make fun of the insularity and provincialism of many Americans, they themselves seem equally ignorant of life in the US. Many have never been here, of course, or if they have, have spent a few days in Disney World, New York, and L.A. And God help 'em if they base their opinions on Hollywood's products. We need more year-long student exchange programs. The Erasmus program has served Europe well.

SFC Ski has a great point!

While living in Europe for three years, our family had several vacations in Germany and always found the German people very friendly and on the whole a pro-american and gregarious people.

France, on the other hand, was just the opposite, at least in Paris and the major population centers. The urban French seemed to have an in-bred hatred for Americans and were outright rude and nasty to us.

As SFC Ski says, it seems the German media is anti-american, not the people!

To get an idea of some of the loopy things which Europeans - particularly Germans - actually believe about the US, you might check out my earlier article on the subject.

Mike:"As an American, I find it curious that while many Europeans correctly make fun of the insularity and provincialism of many Americans, they themselves seem equally ignorant of life in the US."

I will make a broad statement in that Europeans are so saturated by American pop culture especially TV and movies, that there is a misperception they have of Americans. Anyone, anywhere can be guilty of attributing truth to what they see in the media as objectively true.

Try it yourself. What's the first thing that comes to your mind with each word?:
Arab
German
Frenchman
African
Refugee
Hunter
Athlete
Soldier
Jew

Each person who reads this has a first response, which may or may not then be modified but what other really know.

Point is, the German media in this case feeds the stereotypes TV presents, and those that know better shine it on or refute it, and those that choose not to learn more say, "See, just as I thought!"

I go the Germany a lot on business, these books are way out in left field, but the sentiments expressed are gaining momentum. Go to France, where the Nationalist movement is really underway. Why? Because all the immigration has started to errode ttheir womb to tomb socialism. I'd be mad too if....
Guaranteed college no longer existed
Guaranteed Health care no longer existed
Guaranteed Vacations no longer existed

and all because of the immigration drain on the budget. You see hints of it in the U.S. press, but not much.

There is raising dissent. (is that an oxymoron?)

#11 — April 3, 2005 @ 20:15PM — Dave Nalle [URL]

The problem with German Nationalism and Nativism is that because of their heritage the nationalists are viewed by most as marginal nutcases, neo-nazis who have no legitimate place in the political process.

In France, because they don't have that same history, you can get away with being extreme and against immigration and you can still be taken somewhat seriously. Or very seriously given the obvious problems immigration is causing.

As for the obliviousness of most Americans and
US media, the two times I've posted on topics related to this I've encountered quite a bit of ignorane and denial, especially from liberals who are convinced that everything is just fine in Europe and that we should be immitating them at ever turn.

Germans don't hate americans. You shouldn't generalize. There are good and bad people all over the world. And we all have our history to carry. Love and peace
