McDonald's is the new Catholic Church
Published March 19, 2005
We're Asian and Pacific Islander Americans and our diverse cultures and our everyday American lifestyle are becoming one. We're hanging on to our great traditions while we move to the beat of the times. We honor our heritage and we love being Americans. From high fashion to high tech, from Asian Pacific American hip hop to haute cuisine, we're weaving the threads of our culture into the fabric of everyday American life. Whether we're celebrating one of our cultural holidays or enjoying a Big Mac sandwich, we're helping make the magic mix called America become even richer. And McDonald's is right there with us, everyday! We are proud of our cultural heritage.
Yeah...okay guys...whatever...
I find this so much more repulsive than straight-up assimilation efforts, don't you? The company is following in the time-honoured footsteps of the mother church... Make whatever concessions that you have to, but bring 'em into the fold! You want to celebrate your "special cultural holidays" while chowing down on Big fuckin' Macs? Go ahead!
We're lovin' it! It's a very pragmatic religion. That's how you create more "defenders of the faith" (or, in this case--"defenders of the chicken selects"--I'm not even kidding there, click on the link!)--don't ask anyone to think or do anything differently from what they have been doing...If there's any friction--grease the gullets with special sauce and another ode to "diversity"--just make sure to collect the tithe, and get the burgers out!

oh thanks Eric--
I think everyone should make a weekly visit to the McDonald's USA site... Lotta food for thought there--even if you ultimately must vomit it back up... It is one crazy place!
Dave
I agree the tone is quasi-religious, very creepy
No problem, Eric. My comment was something about the troubling nature of the title. And on reflection, I fear the problem may be that the title is too close to being correct.
Dave
I just watched Supersize Me, which has me creeped out about fastfood in general, and MickyDs especially.
The comarison of McDonald's to religion is a good one -- one which I'm sure could be pushed much further past where you've gone here.
Sit on your ass and eat BigMacs and Fries, you get fat, imagine my surprise!
So many people say Supersize Me got them away from fast food; maybe I should watch it. Gotta find some way to break my addiction to those accursed fries.
Dangit, I can't afford to rent all these movies I hafta watch now, and being on dialup I don't have the bandwidth to download them from Bittorrent. (And of course I'm far too ethical to watch pirated movies, anyway.)
Guess all these movies will just have to wait until I save up enough for a subscription to NetFlix.
perhaps some of you will be interested in the film that my friend and I thinking about writing... Grimace as Prometheus/Miltonic Satan/rebel against a Menu that has a place for us all!
