Region 1 DVD Releases For March 15, 2005
Published March 16, 2005
Hey folks.
To be honest, this week, The Duke has already exceeded his weekly DVD allowance, as dictated by the people's government of North Cuba. What occurred is that on Monday I picked up one of the very best box-sets I have ever encountered.
Nick Broomfield, in case you didn't know, is just about The Duke's favorite documentarian of all ever, and a set, Nick Broomfield - Documenting Icons, has just been released on Region 2 comprising six of his best flicks.
In other words, it contains the uncut Fetishes, alongside Tracking Down Maggie, The Leader, The Driver And The Driver's Wife, Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam, Chicken Ranch and Soldier Girls. Infuriatingly, however, the Fetishes disc doesn't have the 50-odd minutes of deleted scenes which are available on the similarly just-released Special Edition.
Still, there's plenty archive footage and Broomfield intros and commentaries and so on. You can expect a series of in-depth nonsense regarding it all sometime soon.
However, for you Region 1 cats who maybe can't get hold of the Broomfield box, or who couldn't give a shit for the ever-so-smug boom-mike flinger, then here's a couple things you may be tempted by.
The Incredibles
I thought I had reviewed this, until I went for to inspect said critique, and found it didn't exist. The crux of The Duke's thoughts, though, were that although it's a tad overlong, this is still fantastic.
Whether or not it's as good as Brad Bird's earlier The Iron Giant, well, we'll just have to sit back and let time reveal its elusive secrets.
This disc is indispensable, filled with fantastic extras. There's a commentary track, a host of featurettes, and best of all, an all-new animated short concerning the toddler and the babysitter. Sweet as Krishna's own honey, I'm guessing.
The Toolbox Murders
Would you believe it, man. Way back in the mists of yesteryear, when I scribbled my incisive critique of the original Toolbox Murders, I had intended to scribble a similar critique of this Tobe Hooper remake the very next day. Needless to say, it never materialized. I've had this sitting here since then, man, and only watched the first twenty minutes.
I just never got round to finishing it. Odd, really, since it looked rather promising. Maybe I'll catch up this week.
It's very bizarre, though, that Tobe Hooper has remade a film that was originally inspired primarily by his own masterpiece, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Word on the street is that this is very gory, but does away with all the psycho-sexual concerns of the really rather swell original.

Indeed it is. Best get the reading glasses out, i'm guessing.
In other news, i can't belive i hyphenated Fred Astaire. I'll fix that up right the hell now.
I am interested in Sword of Doom, but no very little about. It is hard to go wrong woth a Criterion releae, they truly care about the films they release.
Chris, Sword Of Doom is well worth checking out. And yeah, Criterion do a brilliant job. shame they couldn't grab more extras on occasion. Mind you, extras or no, their release of Kwaidan is immaculate. Dig those colors, would you ever?
