I happen to know that there could not have been anyone better to preform the mojority of the songs that Beyonce took. She's one of the most popular voices in music so lay off of her and worry about the people who did'nt fill their duty on the show people ...

*shudder* Oh, "Vois sur ton Chemin"... that poor song; I loved the original. Beyonce killed it. I definitely agree with the previous comments about her pronunciation and that she should learn to speak at least a bit of the language before attempting to sing it. I'm not even from the country - simply an American who speaks French - and I wanted to clap my hands over my ears and scream... and what was with that horrid intensity? It was a calm, flowing song, and -- ugh.

MB, to answer your question, yes, a lot of them only go if they are nominated or if a film they are involved with has been nominated, especially if they are working on another film somewhere.

2005 oscars? boring, boring, boring. and not very well-attended. it seemed as though many of the bigger stars didn't even bother to attend. i mean where was nicole kidman, and where was jack nicholson? meryl streep, catherine and michael, susan sarandon, sandra bullock, jude law, etc.? do they only go now if they are nominated? didn't it used to be the event to see and be seen? and the fashions...gosh where's cher when we need her? bring back a little edginess, something interesting. everyone going on about cate blanchett's gown? i love her and think she often looks gorgeous and glamorous and she's an amazing actress...but a yellow gown with a burgundy sash? oh please. and what could laura linney have been thinking? and that performance with santana and antonio banderas....it was if they were performing two different songs...santana's is one of the most talented guitarists of our time and this pairing made him look like an amateur...and the awards in the audience....give me a break.

I have to say i thought Beyonce's 3 appearences was the most annoying thing about the Oscars 2005. what in the world were they thinking? Having the same singer sing the majority of the songs! thats just cheap!! who in the hell is Be' to be there and sing those songs, esp. the French one which sounded more like Spanish because of her not being able to prononce a damn thang! It was a good show apart from that. Oscars has gone down hill for many years now because we do not have any great personalities in Hollywood. All we have are the next big thing 'It' people. Why do you think heavy weights like Martin S and Clint E were honoured? and Santana was propably the best thing of the evening and the fact that Oscar awarded those types of talent shows we dont have much of a good thing left after they have gone. It was more like an MTV awards show with Chris Rock and Beyonce, Jay Z and P Diddy all over the place. Funny i should say something like that because i am a massive RnB and hip hop follower but i think the oscars should steer away from being too MTV and keep it Hollywood and movie related as much as poss. Aaliyahs appearence for the nominated song in i think 1998 was perfect. she actually did sing the songs single for release at the time and had that humble personality to let Oscar do its thing. She sung it like a true star with sophistication and power of a true movie song, like Streisand can. people like that are truely missing in todays hollywood and movies. you get better talent from TV shows these days like 24, Housewives, Nip/Tuck and Smallville. When Hollywood makes a fuss over Scarlett Johannsen then you know you are in trouble. Seriously if Oscar wanted new hip and hot music talent for their night why not choose a Hollywood face like JLo? That girl can sing with power and shes got the style to match. beyonce is just over the top, which is how i am going to sound if i carry on talking like this! Thanks

Tell me what the "Academy" is going to do to keep this awards thing going. I wonder if this whole enterprise is losing steam. There seem to be some initial concern that viewers among the young were low and that the interest of those under 30 and non-gay is minimal. What will Hollywood to regroup all those financial losses?

Matthew -- thank you so much for defending Scorsese, who was indeed robbed. I swear, the Oscars get more and more political each year; why do we continue to watch when good actors get snubbed due to their "outsider" status or, to a lesser extent nowadays, their color? The Academy has, at long last, tipped their hat toward blacks, but I'm still sore that it took so long to do it, and the triple-whammy a couple of years ago -- Sidney Portier's lifetime achievement award, Denzel's undeserved Best Actor for "Training Day", and Halle Berry's Best Actress for "Monster's Ball" (her acceptance speech was much more moving than her performance in the film) -- looked contrived and detracted from Portier's award. But apparently, since they finally bridged that race gap (it only took them seventy-five years), it is now safe to present an award to Morgan Freeman, who arguably could have won it several times over with Shawshank and Driving Miss Daisy. And yes, I agree that his acceptance was one of the classiest, highest points that night.

Now their next step is to reach out to Latinos -- any bets on how long that will take? Apparently they believe that the only Latino actors were the ones they had onstage that night: Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz, and Salma Hayek. Did they really have to call on Antonio to over-sing that tune? And why did they have Salma and Penelope present together?

I hope we see more from Catalina Sandino Moreno in the years to come.

On another note, bravo to Chris Rock for not changing his caustic style. The Academy hired Rock, and that is exactly what they got... not a neutered, FCC-wary version. The good actors, the well-established ones, thought he was funny. Clint Eastwood was laughing. Clint! Hey Sean Penn, here's a clue: if Clint Eastwood doesn't take himself that seriously, you shouldn't either, and you shouldn't begin to take Jude Law seriously. Can we please ban Sean Penn from coming to the Oscars? He's always a wet blanket.

Chris Rock made me laugh all the way for the first time at oscars. If this years oscar was the right one eve Idont know but I think they goona do fine for the years to come.

About the winners Jamie Foxx--deserve remember he has to work harder than any other artist to get the perfomace right.I he did really well.No that the other did less is justt his perfomace was way much harder...

Chris Rock told the academy like it is. Mr Penn needs to get a sense of humor.

The academy needs to decide who they want as a host - this was an experiment - an edgy young comic, who will hold few punches. Who wants to see milktoast - the controversy is good for the academy. Without it, we will all just read the paper the next day, and forget the show.

The empty seats were glaring and I felt I was watching a comedy show instead of the opening ceremony for the Academy Awards. I didn't care for much of the music, but loved seeing the beautiful dresses of the stars. However, many of my favorite stars were missing from the cameras or maybe they are just not interested in being there unless receiving recognition? I'm in agreement with the choices of all the winners, but I sure feel like this annual salute to Hollywood has lost its impact.

Bree--I think people need to be able to take a joke. Jude Law is NOT a star who can carry a movie on his own, which is what Chris Rock was saying in his own caustic way. Sean Penn just HAS to be involved in some type of controversy.

1.	I made an effort finishing most of the show, 'cause the less you got out of it, the more you watch hoping for some boosts which is not a lavish desire. Yet it's still a lackluster one despite the new formats the Academy tried.
2.	People definitely got overdosed with Beyonce, what does she have to with those nominated songs?
 a.	I was expecting the tranquil choir-like voice for the French song, but didn't get any.
 b.	I was expecting the bel canto style for the Phantom of Opera, but didn't get any.
 c.	Hearing Josh Groban' voice alone could have been such a treat, which was robbed away with Beyonce had to join him to add the awkward hip for the Polar Express Song!
3.	Chris Rock could be funny and edgy in his standup, and he tried very hard doing his job last night, yet there is just something not fit there.
4.	What's up with those who have not much to do with Movies. P. Diddy for one, maybe it's the Black James Bond role he is babbling about; omnipresent Oprah, Prince, and Usher? Since Jay-Z had to be supportive to this almost Beyonce solo concert. By forcing this hard, is Academy so desperate to attract young and hippie audience, or does it have to justify the cause by being generous to minorities in a troubled wartime.
5.	The awards for technical aspects of movie were handed out in the walkway of theatre, as if the winners are not the best in their field and the ones they feel thankful to are not important enough to be heard from the big stage.
6.	Sean Penn did the right thing to stand up for Jude Law who is indeed a very good actor.

1. Dustin Hoffman</em>

Oh, good, it wasn't just me. My spouse thought maybe he had a minor stroke while waiting backstage - his speech had that kind of slur to it.

Seriously, one of Beyonce's song - "Vois sur ton chemin" was the most annoying. She's screwed the words, the vocalize and A LITTLE TOO MUCH happier about her performance.

As a french speaking, trust me when I said that some people need to learn how to speak before signing.

I really can't understand the Academy's choice for this performance.
