Album Covers With Nudity All the songs in this playlist are from albums which have nudity on the cover. So keep the kiddies and Tipper Gore away. The funny thing is that the playlist itself is actually pretty good musically. ...for the most part that is.

hey, now that's a visual Robert! The original cover of Roxy's Country Life album was banned in the US for two models wearing see-through underwear

#2 — February 23, 2005 @ 09:07AM — robertburke [URL]

Yes indeed. I included Roxy Music's "The Thrill Of It All" from that album. The story goes that the two women on the cover are women that Bryan Ferry just happend to meet one day and that he took the photograph that is on the album himself.

#3 — February 23, 2005 @ 09:13AM — Eric Olsen

I thought they were German girlfriends connected to the Roxy entourage somehow

I have to repost this on my blog...PLEASE!!!!
Nice PA sticker by the way...

btw...you forgot about the Hendrix album cover with all the naked ladies, the Tribe called Quest covers with the painted lady, and the Ohio Players tribute to the female form on their covers.

I'm sure i will come up with more....

The Country Life Models Story from Q magazine 1991:

Evaline Seelig
and
Constance Lantemenn

'That sleeve was such an accident," explains Evaline Seelig, referring back to when she and her equally scantily-clad best friend, Constance Lantemann ("the very brutal~looking one to the right of the photo," the latter giggles) had adorned Roxy's fourth album. The pair had had a chance meeting with Roxy Music mainman Bryan Ferry and his creative director Anthony Price in Portugal. '~We were on holiday there at my parents' summer house," Evaline remembers, "where a friend ran a bar and disco. We'd taken him some Roxy Music albums to play there, and he
started looking at them, and said, Re's here, you know'. you have to meet him, and he introduced us to Bryan."
There was already common ground. Roxy PR Simon Puxley knew the girls as he was also working for Can guitarist Michael Karoli, Constance's brother and Evaline's boyfriend. "Brian liked our shoulders and German outlook," Constance picks up the story, "so they proposed, just for fun, to make this photo session. We didn't think it would actually be used!" The creative angle, she continues, "was meant to be an ironic version of the magazine Country Life, with two ladies being surprised in a delicate situation. We didn't talk much about it, we just had to look weird and surprised."
So did the American retail trade, who decided that if the flimsy, see-through knickers weren't enough, the possibility that Bvaline was in self-abusing mode was beyond the moral pale. The album was subsequently released Stateside under a green wrap. "People thought we were lying down and masturbating but that was never the intention!" shrieks Evaline. "Neither did we choose the photo, but Bryan did ask us if we were d'accord with it. We didn't think it was scandalous anyway."

I was right about the German part and the word "girlfriend" was used!

#10 — February 23, 2005 @ 09:46AM — Eric Olsen

and L. Cue is totally right about the Ohio Players covers, a whole series of them, and of course the Hendrix. Also, Be Bop Deluxe's Sunburst Finish

#11 — February 23, 2005 @ 09:48AM — Robert [URL]

Eric,

I like to think that Bryan just met them in the woods and took a poloroid.

You are ruining my fantasy by foprcing me to find the truth... ;-)

#12 — February 23, 2005 @ 10:05AM — Eric Olsen

Robert, I like your version better, too!

#13 — February 23, 2005 @ 10:33AM — mrbenning [URL]

From what I understand, Bryan Ferry wouldn't be too interested in a double-team of near naked women in the woods.

#14 — February 23, 2005 @ 10:46AM — Eric Olsen

you mean then, or now, or in general?

#15 — February 23, 2005 @ 10:53AM — Rodney Welch [URL]

I prefer more subtle album covers.

Regardless of their orientation now, Ferry and Jagger shared a few boyfriends back in the day. At least, that's what I've heard.

#21 — February 23, 2005 @ 15:34PM — Eric Olsen

hmm, I was under the impression old Bryan has favored the ladies all along. They were both married to Jerry Hall, but she's a girl

#22 — February 23, 2005 @ 15:40PM — mrbenning [URL]

Ahhh, after a bit of research it seems you are correct, Eric. My popular music instructor must have been smoking something.

#23 — February 23, 2005 @ 15:42PM — Eric Olsen

they were pretty glammy in the early days, but so was Motley Crue

#24 — February 23, 2005 @ 19:29PM — alienboy [URL]

and not "Electric Ladyland"? C'mon, are you even trying???

#25 — February 23, 2005 @ 21:30PM — Robert Burke [URL]

The nude cover version of Electric Ladyland is about as easy to find as a Gay Repiblican. Sure they exsist, but aren't really worth mentioning.

#26 — February 24, 2005 @ 01:17AM — Lono [URL]

the nude Electic Ladyland was a European release only, and was quickly fixed (Jimmy was not amused and did not authorize it). Also, if I remember correctly it is only the inside gatefold that was a bunch of nudies. If you have this on vinyl, it is most likely worth thousands.

I was very surprised not to see Traffic on the list. That is the only one I knew. Oh, does Herb Alpert 'whip cream and other delights' count?

#27 — February 24, 2005 @ 09:15AM — Robert Burke [URL]

Lono,

This list was not meant to be the final authority on the subject. There are literally hundreds of nude album covers not included on my list.

In fact, there are books on the subject
But, yes, the albums you mentioned could certainly be on the list

#28 — February 24, 2005 @ 09:51AM — Eric Olsen

Robert, people love to chime in with suggestions to lists - it's no negative reflection on the "completeness" of your list, which rules.

#29 — February 24, 2005 @ 13:57PM — Robert Burke [URL]

That's fine. I have no problem with people listing their own personal favorites but it would be better if it was done with a spirit of coopean ration rather than disrespect.

ie: "Electric Ladyland"? C'mon, are you even trying???"

#30 — February 24, 2005 @ 14:10PM — Eric Olsen

ah yes

#31 — February 25, 2005 @ 11:40AM — Douglas Mays [URL]

OK, the European release of Electric Ladyland, Country Life by Roxy Music (plus other releases were quite tasty), The Slits! I forgot about that one!, The drawing on the Blind Faith cover, Whip Cream and Other Delights by Herb Albert sure had me going as a youngster in the late 60s.

Some of the covers on your more easy listening and obscure releases of times of yore were actually quite relvealing in their subliminal way. Every once in a while you'll come across an album by someone you never heard of in the 60s, look at the cover and think "my goodness, this is racey! I'll buy it for that alone"

Some of the Lords Of Acid covers, specifically their singles, are just straight up porn.

just finished reading the comments again..this is still a cool post!
Part II Robert?

nevermind by nirvana had little boy nudity

#35 — March 20, 2005 @ 12:49PM — Victor Plenty [URL]

"Weird Al" Yankovic's Off the Deep End has nudity on the cover. Considering that Weird Al has apparently never grown up (and quite proudly so), one could even call it little boy nudity, but only with a strong dose of irony.

Nirvana's Nevermind album cover has infant nudity, which is not even close to the same thing as "little boy" nudity. American culture is much more comfortable with infant nudity than with any other form. But the phrase "little boy nudity" carries connotations of child pornography, which is one of the things American culture (and many others) are entirely justified to loathe.

Of course it's quite possible John is well aware of these connotations, and used the phrase anyway out of a dislike for Nirvana.
